About Ballet West From Balanchine to Bournonville, Petipa to Tharp, Ballet West boasts a rich and varied repertoire, elegant and versatile artists, and an American style and legacy that is as dynamic, expansive, and as unexpected as the Rocky Mountain region it represents. From its humble beginnings in 1963 as the only professional ballet company between Chicago and the West Coast, Ballet West has grown into one of America’s leading ballet companies. For 60 years, the Salt Lake City-based Company has entertained and excited audiences in Utah and worldwide by presenting the great classical story ballets, including America’s first and longest-running version of The Nutcracker, revivals of rarelyseen historical masterpieces, works by some of the world’s most renowned artists, and new cutting-edge creations by emerging choreographers. Ballet West was established in Salt Lake City by co-founders Willam F. Christensen, often called the “Godfather of American ballet,” and Utah’s “First Lady of the Arts,” Glenn Walker Wallace. In 1951, Christensen established the first ballet department in an American university at The University of Utah. Over time, this program grew into the Utah Civic Ballet, Ballet West’s first incarnation. Prior to that, along with his brothers, Lew and Harold, Christensen made history by establishing the oldest full-ballet company in the western United States, the San Francisco Ballet. Since its inception, Ballet West has had five artistic directors, who have each helped build the Company’s unique and expansive profile – its founder, Willam Christensen, Bruce Marks, John Hart CBE, Jonas Kåge, and for the past 16 years, Adam Sklute, who has overseen the artistic product for the longest sustained growth of the Company since its founding. Ballet West continues to grow and evolve with 38 company members, 14 second company members, a thriving Academy, and one of the world’s largest ballet-based Education and Outreach programs, reaching over 100,000 children and adults throughout Utah and the Intermountain Region every year. The Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West (BW) Academy builds future ballet and dance artists and audiences by providing training in classical ballet, flamenco, character, contemporary, hip-hop, and theatrical dance training. The BW Academy has over 1,000 students between its four campuses, Salt Lake City, Trolley Corners, Park City, and Utah County. With newlyrenovated student housing, the BW Academy is home to local, national, and international ballet students, with more than 50% of BW Academy students joining Ballet West.

From the Artistic Director Welcome and thank you for joining us! Swan Lake is synonymous with ballet. The mere mention of it conjures up images of elegant ballerinas, chivalrous princes, and that sublime heart-wrenching music by Tchaikovsky. Originally premiered in 1877 by the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow, it was not a success, but then revised in 1895 by the Maryinsky Ballet in St. Petersburg, Russia, when it became a huge hit and has been recreated and re-envisioned countless times since then. Our founder, Willam Christensen created the first fulllength American production of Swan Lake in 1940 when he was the Artistic Director of San Francisco Ballet. The role of the prince was performed by his brother Lew. “Mr. C’s” version of Swan Lake pre-dates his world-famous version of The Nutcracker. In fact, over the years, all of Ballet West’s Artistic Directors have presented their own versions of Swan Lake that have been faithful to the 1895 concept by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, but each unique unto themselves. Ballet West first unveiled my interpretation in 2010. Enlisting our Principal Rehearsal Director, Pamela Robinson-Harris and our late Rehearsal Director, Mark Goldweber, we began an exploration with the dancers to unravel the many layers of this complex ballet. There were so many ways the story could be told and so many historic choreographic approaches that could be aligned with our Ballet West aesthetic. With so many versions stemming from the 1895 Petipa/Ivanov, but with their own different approaches that reflected their generations, the ideas and concepts seemed almost limitless. Deciding on a framework that incorporated Mr. C’s Maryinsky-based approach and Royal Ballet of London’s historic British staging of this grand classic, we set out to create a version that was at once classic and contemporary. The goal was to maintain the classicism and honor the history while making the characters and situations relatable to modern audiences. While the ballet is a fairytale throughout, we can recognize so many current issues it addresses when viewed through a modern lens. Prince Siegfried for instance, hates his duty as part of the monarchy and resists his mother, The Queen, who pressures him to marry for duty. Siegfried, as I see it, also suffers very deeply from depression, something so many can easily relate to in this day and age. The evil magician Baron Von Rothbardt, is, unremorsefully, a human trafficker who has been abducting young girls and turning them into Swans for countless centuries. Princess Odette, the Swan Queen, suffers from “Stockholm syndrome” unable to free herself physically and emotionally from her captor, the Baron, and her doppelganger, the glamourous Odile could be looked upon as an AI “girlfriend,” the embodiment of Prince Siegfried’s ideal woman, designed by Rothbard to seduce the Prince into betraying Odette. Finally, in the end, because of the brave sacrifice of Odette and the Prince, the Swan Maidens – these captive women – are empowered to confront and vanquish their abductor, the evil Baron. 20

From the Artistic Director These are complex psychological ideas that can indeed resonate with 21st-century audiences, but ultimately Swan Lake is a beautiful ballet to Tchaikovsky’s iconic and moving score. The music and dancing still have the power to stop our breath with their delicacy, beauty, and majesty. This is what keeps Swan Lake so special to this day. Along with the traditional pieces of choreography, Mark Goldweber weaved in charming dances for the court, children, and Princesses vying for the Prince’s hand. Pamela Robinson-Harris reworked the Swan corps to bring out the pathos, their dynamics, and a finale where they rise up and overthrow the evil baron. Swan Lake is a fantasy, but it is also a very real tale that portrays the dilemma between accepting one’s fate and pushing for something different; the understanding of consequence; and ultimately the divinity that comes from doing the right thing. Adam Sklute Artistic Director, Ballet West Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director, overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought-after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives. Most recently, Sklute was included in Deseret Magazine’s 25 Changemakers of the West for his efforts to build greater equity and inclusion in classical ballet.

In Memory Ballet West’s first Ballet Mistress, Bené Arnold, passed away in January 2024. Recognized as one of Utah’s women pioneers of dance, Arnold influenced the lives of hundreds of dancers through Ballet West’s history and the University of Utah’s dance program. Arnold joined the San Francisco Ballet School in 1948, where she rose to the rank of Soloist before joining Ballet West as Mr. C’s first Ballet Mistress in 1964. In 1975, she joined the Department of Ballet faculty at the University of Utah, but still remained involved with Ballet West, serving as rehearsal mistress for young dancers in The Nutcracker and directing Ballet West Academy. In 1984, she was honored by the Utah State Senate for her contribution to the state and in 1997, she received the Chamber of Commerce Award and Governor's Award for the Arts. 23–24 SEASON

From the Executive Director Ballet West’s 60th Anniversary Season, which is well under way, continues with one of the most iconic ballets in the repertoire: Swan Lake. Following a five-year absence from the stage, this incredibly moving, haunting, and opulent production has it all: extraordinary choreography set to a score universally considered a masterpiece that unfolds a plot pitting good against evil. Rather than spoil it for those who have not yet experienced Swan Lake, I will simply say, in my humble opinion, there are few works of art that have stirred such passionate feelings and continue to do so nearly 150 years following their creation. It is with pride that I share with you that Ballet West is now among the 10 largest ballet companies in America (number nine, to be exact!) Imagine such an accomplishment in the context of the population of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area, which ranks 46th in the nation (as of 2022). Sixty years after its founding, this remarkable company is equally adept at full-length classics such as Swan Lake, as well as contemporary programs, including November’s triple bill, which followed Dracula in October. We offer Utah audiences the very best artistry performed by dancers who rank among the most talented anywhere. The Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy, with four campuses, is one of the nation’s largest, boasting outstanding training and with providing access to more than 1,000 students worldwide. Our outreach and education programs in the community are the largest in America, serving nearly 100,000 children and adults. We bring dance to schools, correctional facilities, senior residences, addiction treatment centers, and community organizations, free of charge. With spring less than two months away, please mark your calendars for Love and War, which opens April 12th and runs through the 20th. This mixed program features Ulysses Dove’s Red Angels, the company premiere of William Forsyth’s Blake Works I, and the return of The Green Table by Kurt Joos. Very few companies are licensed to perform such challenging works, demonstrating yet again Ballet West’s elevated stature in the field of ballet. Michael Scolamiero Executive Director Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Scolamiero previously served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet for three years, during which time the organization achieved a significant reduction in debt, as well as robust growth in ticket revenue, contributions, and touring income. Prior to Miami City Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero was Pennsylvania Ballet’s Executive Director for 17 years, the longest tenure in the Company’s history and among the longest of any leader of a major ballet company. During his tenure, Mr. Scolamiero led the organization’s first capital campaign, which raised $11.9 million (against a $10 million goal) to build an endowment and fund repertoire expansion. At Ballet West, Mr. Scolamiero has played a key role in transforming the organization’s financial health. No longer using external financing to meet cash needs, Ballet West’s balance sheet is strong after realizing operating surpluses for three consecutive fiscal years. Mr. Scolamiero is currently working with the Board and management on a new strategic plan that will serve as a blueprint for Ballet West’s aspirations as the organization enters its 60th season and beyond.

Synopsis Prologue The time is years before our story even begins, showing a place of unknown origin. Young Princess Odette is playing quietly with her handmaidens and friends when a strange creature – half man, half bird of prey – appears at her window. He envelopes her in his wings and transforms her into a swan. Act I – The royal grounds in front of the castle It is Prince Siegfried’s 21st birthday. His best friends, Benno von Summerstein, and Wolfgang, the Major Domo of the court, have organized a party. All the courtiers, young and old, have come together to celebrate. The Prince only half-heartedly partakes in the festivities. His mother, the Queen, arrives to wish him a happy birthday. She presents him with a signet of her late husband, the king, and gives him the gift of a crossbow. The Queen reminds Siegfried that eligible princesses from around the world will be attending his birthday ball and that he will be required to choose a bride to ensure his future as monarch. This makes Prince Siegfried uneasy. Siegfried is a romantic who does not want any part of a political marriage, nor does he welcome the responsibilities of the throne. As dusk falls, Wolfgang tells the story of an evil sorcerer who lives in the ruins by a lake. Filled with hate because he has never been loved, this evil bird creature abducts young women, transforms them into swans, and holds them in his power. Only the true love of a human man can break the spell and free the women. At that moment, a flock of swans fly overhead. Prince Siegfried gathers Benno and some friends to go off in search of them. Act II – The Lake It is late and the moon is high when Siegfried and his friends arrive at the lake where the swans have alighted. The men take no notice of a strange owl who stares at them malevolently from his perch in the ruins above the lake. The owl is in fact the sorcerer, Baron von Rothbardt, who is jealously guarding his domain. Prince Siegfried aims his crossbow at the flock. Suddenly one swan flies forward. He is fascinated and attempts to capture it. As the swan frantically tries to escape his grasp, she undergoes a startling transformation and, before his eyes, turns into the most beautiful woman Siegfried has ever seen. She tells him that her name is Princess Odette and, because of the spell cast on her years ago, she must remain a swan by day only to become human by the light of the moon. She implores Siegfried and his men to spare these swans, as they too are enchanted young women, and she is their queen. As the men retreat, Odette disappears into the mists and Siegfried goes off in search of her. Confident with the success of his manipulation, the sorcerer swoops down from his perch and bids the swan maidens to dance for him. Siegfried finds the beautiful Swan Queen, and just as he is about to swear his everlasting love, the very words that will free her, the sorcerer pulls Odette away with his magic. As the dawn rises, Odette reverts to her bird form, leaving Siegfried in the mist.

BALLET WEST

Synopsis Act III – The great hall of the castle Royalty from around the world gather to celebrate Prince Siegfried’s birthday. The Queen is confident that her son will choose a bride, but as each princess is introduced, Siegfried is polite, but uninterested. His thoughts are solely on Odette. Two strange guests appear unannounced. They are the mysterious Baron von Rothbardt and his beautiful daughter, Odile. Odile looks identical to the Swan Queen Odette, except that she is dressed in black and her manner is wickedly seductive. Believing that Odile is his beloved Odette, Siegfried takes her by the hand and leads her off. The Queen, equally enchanted by this exotic pair, instructs Wolfgang to commence the entertainment. The Matadors from Spain, the Neapolitan dancers from Italy, and the elegant lords and ladies from Hungary all perform until von Rothbardt interrupts the action and introduces his daughter Odile once again. In front of everyone, she captures the heart of Prince Siegfried. Thinking Odile is Odette, Siegfried tells his mother he will marry Odile, and swears eternal love to her. As a swan, Odette frantically beats her wings at the window, trying desperately to stop the false pledge. Von Rothbardt reveals his ruse and disappears with Odile, confident that he has won and maintains evil control over his swan maidens. Too late, Siegfried realizes his mistake, and flees the palace determined to make amends. Act IV – The Lake The swans anxiously await the return of their queen, Odette, hopeful that she has saved them through the love of Prince Siegfried. When she arrives, she tells them of Siegfried’s betrayal. Now all is lost. Prince Siegfried rushes out of the mists. He has been running all night. The swans gather around their queen to protect her, but she steps forward. Despite it all, she still loves him. Siegfried begs forgiveness and she grants it. In a fury, von Rothbardt swoops down to separate the pair. Odette sees that her only escape is to take her own life. She runs off while Siegfried and the sorcerer battle. Taunted by von Rothbardt, Siegfried realizes that he too must take his life. It is the only way to prove his true love and save the swan maidens. He runs after Odette while the swan maidens heroically block von Rothbardt. The lovers hurl themselves onto the rocks below, thus breaking the spell. The sorcerer’s wings break and he melts into nothingness. As the sun dawns on a new day, young maidens appear out of the mists, freed forever from the sorcerer’s evil magic. Odette and Siegfried are united eternally in heaven.

Sinopsis Prólogo La escena comienza años antes de nuestra historia en un lugar desconocido. La joven princesa Odette juega tranquilamente con sus doncellas y amigos cuando una extraña criatura, mitad hombrey mitad ave de presa, aparece en su ventana. La criatura la envuelve en sus alas y la transforma en un cisne. Acto I. Los Terrenos Reales Frente al Castillo. Es el cumpleaños número 21 del príncipe Siegfried. Sus mejores amigos, Benno von Summerstein, y Wolfgang, el mayordomo de la corte, han organizado una fiesta. Todos los cortesanos, jóvenes y viejos, se han reunido para celebrar. El Príncipe solo participa a medias en las festividades. Su madre, la Reina, llega para desearle feliz cumpleaños. Ella le presenta un sello de su difunto esposo el rey, y le regala una ballesta. Dos desconocidos invitados aparecen sin previo aviso. Ellos son el misterioso barón von Rothbardt y su hermosa hija, Odile. Odile se ve idéntica a la Reina del Cisne, Odette, excepto que está vestida de negro y su actitud es perversamente seductora. Jared Oaks, one of the leading young ballet conductors in the United States, is Music Director of Ballet West. Since joining the company in 2008, Jared has maintained a rigorous conducting schedule, in addition to playing for rehearsals and classes. He has conducted performances for Houston Ballet and The Sarasota Ballet, and he has worked with the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra, the Chicago Sinfonietta, the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra, among others. Jared’s numerous compositions include an oratorio about Joan of Arc, with poems by Suzanne Lundquist, and chamber ballets for Ballet West, Charlotte Ballet, and Mid-Columbia Ballet. Jared is also a fellow of the American-Scandinavian Foundation and co-founder of the Composer Discovery Initiative.

Profiles PAMELA ROBINSON HARRIS

Principal Rehearsal Director, Additional Choreography for Acts II and IV

Born in Landstuhl, Germany, Pamela received her formative training at Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet, Joffrey School of Ballet Summer Intensive, and National Academy of the Arts. Graduating early from high school at 17, she received her first job as an apprentice with Cleveland Ballet, followed by the State of Alabama Ballet in 1982, and Ballet Mississippi in 1984. Pamela joined Ballet West in 1985, advancing to Principal in 1988. In 1997, Pamela joined the Ballet West Artistic Staff as a Ballet Mistress. She served from 2006-2007 as Ballet West’s Interim Artistic Director. Together with Associate Director of Ballet West II, Peggy Dolkas, she co-choreographed three ballets for Ballet West’s Family Classics Series – The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Beauty and the Beast. She also reworked major sections of Ballet West’s productions of The Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, and Giselle, and has choreographed for Ballet West II and the Ballet West Academy Professional Training Division. Pamela has now been with Ballet West for over 33 years, and continues to serve as the company’s Principal Rehearsal Director.

Additional Choreography for Acts I and II

Mark Goldweber joined the Joffrey Ballet in 1975 as a member of Joffrey II, and he was invited to join the main Joffrey Ballet in 1977. His first role was the “Boy in Blue” in the Joffrey recreation of Sir Frederick Ashton’s Les Patineurs, which he later reprised for public television’s Dance In America series. Throughout his career, Goldweber has had the honor of working personally with such great choreographers and Ballet Masters as Robert Joffrey, Antony Tudor, Agnes DeMille, Celia Franca, Twyla Tharp, Paul Taylor, Yuriko, Georgette Tsinguirides, Michael Somes, Alexander Grant, Brian Show, and Wendy Ellis. He was the founding Ballet Master for Oregon Ballet Theatre and was Ballet Master and Director of Apprentices for The Joffrey Ballet from 1996-2007 before accepting the positions of Ballet Master and Director of Ballet West II. Goldweber has taught in the Joffrey Balle School summer program in New York City for several years and he played himself in Robert Altman’s “The Company”. Mark Goldweber was Ballet Master for Ballet West from 2007 until his passing in December 2011. 36

Profiles PYOTR ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY Composer, Swan Lake

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) studied at the Conservatory in St. Petersburg, where George Balanchine later studied piano in addition to his studies in dance. Tchaikovsky is one of the most popular and influential of all romantic composers. His work is expressive, melodic, and grand in scale, with rich orchestration. His output was prodigious and included chamber works, symphonies, and concerti for various instruments, operas, and works for the piano. His creation for the ballet, composed in close partnership with Marius Petipa, include Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and The Sleeping Beauty.

PETER CAZALET Sets and Costumes

Peter Cazalet was born in Zambia, Central Africa and obtained a Bachelor of Architecture degree at the University of Cape Town. He later moved to London and spent 15 years with Scottish Ballet. After attaining principal dancer status, his career was suddenly shifted due to a back injury. Peter then returned to Cape Town and designed ballets, operas, and plays as Head of Design for the Opera House. He also worked on projects in the United States, Europe, and the East. Ballet West holds a special significance for Peter as his first American assignment many years ago.

KATE ASHTON Lighting Design

Kate Ashton is the Lighting Director for Fall for Dance at New York City Center and has designed pieces for the Festival, including Christopher Wheeldon’s The Two of Us. She is also the resident lighting designer for the dance department at Williams College and the Joffrey Ballet School (NYC). She has worked as the Assistant Lighting Director for both American Ballet Theatre and New York City Ballet. Upcoming: Elizabeth Cree (Glimmerglass), La Clemenza di Tito (Juilliard). The Frederick Quinney Lawson Ballet West Academy, the official school of Ballet West, is Utah’s premier source of dance training, providing the highest caliber of ballet instruction to professionally-bound students, as well as to those who simply wish to enjoy this beautiful and athletic art form. Academy students experience a structured curriculum offered in a nurturing, respectful, and positive environment, celebrating and exploring each student’s individual strengths and abilities. The Ballet West Academy and its distinguished faculty is led by Evelyn Cisneros-Legate, recently honored as one of Utah Business’s Women of the Year. Pre-professional students are given the unique opportunity to be observed regularly and take classes with Ballet West Artistic Director Adam Sklute, and are considered for future positions with Ballet West. Avocational students build strength, coordination, and confidence through focused and joyous top-level dance education. Classes begin at age three and are available at four locations including: Jessie Eccles Quinney Ballet Centre, Trolley Corners, Utah County, and Peggy Bergmann Park City Campus.

House Rules To ensure the enjoyment of the majority of our patrons who arrive on time, and in deference to the artists, latecomers will not be admitted to the auditorium until there is an appropriate pause in the performance. During some productions, this pause may not occur until the end of the first act. • Although masks are not required while attending Ballet West performances for the 2023-2024 season, we encourage patrons who wish to wear a mask to do so. If you are feeling unwell, experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, have been diagnosed with COVID-19, or have had close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19, we ask that you follow CDC quarantine and isolation guidelines and prioritize your health and the health of your fellow audience members and stay home. Ballet West reserves the right to change or amend the health policy for performances in the future. • All casting is subject to change. • For your own safety and the safety of other patrons, please do not exit the Theatre before the house lights are up. • Any use of cameras and recording equipment in the Theatre, which is not authorized by the management, is strictly prohibited. • No babes in arms.
