F ROM T H E A RT I S T IC DI R E CTOR Like many of you, my first ballet was The Nutcracker. Growing up in the San Francisco Bay area, the first version I saw was Lew Christensen’s. It filled me with wonder and joy and over the years I got to know it so well that I waited breathlessly for each section—whether it was the dancing dolls in scene one, the fierce battle with the mice, or all those exotic dances in Act Two. It was almost like opening Christmas presents. I became quite the aficionado by age seven and was always intrigued by the subtle changes that occurred in the choreography from year to year. I used to think that it was a secret only I was privy to. This was long before I realized that it was, of course, Lew’s prerogative as the choreographer. These changes were made for a multitude of reasons—a different dancer may have inspired him to try something new or he may have chosen to highlight one aspect of the ensemble’s timing by changing the accent of a step. These changes are part of living theater. Every year a production like The Nutcracker evolves and grows. There is something different, but it is evergreen. In the same way, our founder Willam Christensen (Lew’s brother), made many changes to his own Nutcracker. His changes were not only choreographic. During his lifetime, he changed the sets and costumes to this holiday classic four times. Now this year, thanks to a generous grant from The George S. & Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, we introduce all new sets and costumes to Mr. C’s incomparable Nutcracker. But this is the first new version being done without Mr. C here to oversee the changes, so in re-imaging the sets and costumes, I knew, first and foremost, that I needed to stay true to Mr. C’s ideals and concepts. I needed to honor and respect all that was great about his version of The Nutcracker – the oldest and the longest running in the United States and possibly the world – while revitalizing and moving the production’s technical aspects into the 21st century. My inspiration for this new remake began with the original E.T. A. Hoffman story “The Nutcracker and The Mouse King,” the same story that Tchaikovsky’s score and Mr. C’s beloved ballet were based on. To that end, I moved the action earlier in history to Hoffman’s time, 1815-1825. This immediately created a fanciful world different from Ballet West’s previous version that was set at the turn of the 19th to 20th Century. The entire look and feel changed without a single alteration to the choreography. This time-period change worked well with Mr. C’s choreography and gave us a launching point for the overall production. We decided to keep the opening scenes, the “reality” as it were, in the exact 1820’s period, but when it moved into the fantasy of Clara’s dreams, we allowed ourselves greater leeway to increase the dreamlike quality of Clara’s journey from the great battle under the tree all the way to the Land of the Sweets where people from every country imaginable live.

F ROM T H E A RT I S T IC DI R E CTOR The creation of the new production truly took on an amazing collaboration. With sumptuous costumes by our Director of Costume Production David Heuvel, and dream like sets initially envisioned by John Wayne Cook and completed by England’s Dick and Belinda Bird. Incorporating wonderful mood-enhancing lighting by Burke Brown, and even projections by Mike Tutaj, all brought to life by our own production, props, and design staff, we were able to produce a world that was E.T.A Hoffman’s, Tchaikovsky’s, and Mr. C’s. Details and continuity were paramount to us in the creation. For example the paintings on the walls of Clara’s house show beautiful landscapes that eventually become the Land of the Sweet’s she and her Nutcracker Prince travel to in Act II. The dolls given to all the girls in the Party Scene are replicas of the dancers form around the world that perform in Act II. The Mouse King in the original story was a seven-headed monster. We wanted to keep him cute, but look closely at his crown and you will see his additional heads. The Backdrop for Act II is a semi-replica of the original 1892 Russian production with subtle but humorous additions such as Utah’s own Saltair at the bottom. We placed the flowers in varied colors to create a beautiful bouquet of different flowers. Even the ornaments on the Christmas tree are replicas of early 19th Century pieces. Ballet West’s perennial production of Willam Christensen’s The Nutcracker is Salt Lake City’s own special Christmas tree – filled with tradition and love, bringing back fond memories. My goal for you with our new production was to maintain all the beauty and tradition of Mr. C’s work while filling this beloved “Christmas tree” with new ornaments. But the secret to any tradition is to make it relevant by keeping it fresh and alive. Thank you for joining us, we hope you enjoy and we are always grateful for your patronage. With Blessings to you all,
Adam Sklute Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. F ROM TH E E X ECU TI V E DIR ECTOR I am thrilled to welcome you to The Nutcracker! After an international search, I recently moved to Salt Lake City from Philadelphia to become Ballet West’s Executive Director. Thanks to a gracious community and the Ballet West family, I am already starting to feel at home. From the Spiral Jetty to funeral potatoes, I am excited to explore the exquisite natural beauty and rich culture of Utah. One thing I have already witnessed is a deep love of the arts, especially our legacy art companies. As the Executive Director, I look forward to continuing the renaissance of this Company, and working with Adam to further his artistic goals, starting with his grand restoration of Willam Christensen’s The Nutcracker. For nearly 75 years, The Nutcracker has been a holiday tradition, introducing millions of children and adults to the beauty of ballet. Its accessible plot, combined with the magic of Christmas, has served as the perfect vehicle for attracting families to dance, many of whom have developed a life-long affection for ballet. As the longest running Nutcracker in America, Ballet West’s production is loved locally, and holds a specially prominence nationally. Willam Christenson’s choreography, which was created for San Francisco Ballet and received its first performance on Christmas Eve in 1944, was the first complete Nutcracker presented in the United States. Today, Ballet West has the distinct privilege of being the only company in the nation that performs Mr. C’s version to this day. Thanks to an extraordinary lead gift from the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, Ballet West is pleased to bring you Mr. C’s renowned choreography but with new sets, costumes and special effects. Not only are we deeply grateful to the Eccles Foundation, we are thankful to all of the donors who have come forward with gifts to make this production possible. As someone brand new to Salt Lake City, the generosity of our community is beyond impressive. For those seeing The Nutcracker for the first time as well as for those for whom it has become a holiday tradition, the performance you are about to see offers incredible dancing, joy, and magic. I cannot think of a better way to celebrate the holidays than watching this timeless ballet performed by your wonderful Ballet West dancers and the cast of talented children from the Ballet West Academy and other schools throughout the region. On behalf of the entire Ballet West family, I wish you a joyous holiday season.
Michael Scolamiero Executive Director Michael Scolamiero recently joined Ballet West after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Scolamiero previously served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet for three years, during which time the organization achieved a significant reduction in debt, as well as robust growth in ticket revenue, contributions, and touring income. Prior to Miami City Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero was Pennsylvania Ballet’s Executive Director for 17 years, the longest tenure in the Company’s history and among the longest of any leader of a major ballet company. During his tenure, Mr. Scolamiero led the organization’s first capital campaign that raised $11.9 million (against a $10 million goal) to build an endowment and fund repertoire expansion. At Ballet West, Mr. Scolamiero is set to implement a newly completed strategic plan and excited to guide a growing and robust Company.

T H E S TO RY THE NUTCRACKER begins at the Stahlbaum home on Christmas Eve. Mr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum and their children, Clara and Fritz, are busy preparing for the evening festivities. The guests arrive, including Clara’s Godfather, Dr. Drosselmeyer. Dr. Drosselmeyer has fashioned a special gift for Clara, a Nutcracker designed in the form of a small soldier. Clara falls in love with her Nutcracker at once. That night, Clara is unable to sleep without one more look at her beloved Nutcracker. She tiptoes back into the living room and cradles it once more before falling asleep. She is not sure if she is dreaming or not, but before her eyes are huge mice playing in front of the Christmas tree that has grown to a tremendous size. The Nutcracker fights with the Mouse King and, in the heat of the battle, Clara takes off her slipper and throws it at the Mouse King. While he is distracted, the Nutcracker stabs him with his saber. After the battle, the Nutcracker is magically transformed into a handsome prince and, grateful to Clara for saving his life, invites her to accompany him on a journey to the fabled Kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy. En route, they pass through the exquisite land of the Snow Queen and her Cavalier. Act II begins in the land of the Sugar Plum Fairy, where Clara is entertained by an array of divertissements, including Spanish, Arabian and Chinese dancers, as well as Mother Buffoon, with her many children who appear from under her gigantic skirt. The evening concludes with the grand pas de deux performed by the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. Following the pas de deux, Clara is whisked away with her prince in a sleigh, while waving goodbye to the Sugar Plum Fairy and her magical kingdom.

CHOREOGRAPHER AND COMPOSER Willam F. Christensen, Ballet West Founder CHOREOGRAPHER, THE NUTCRACKER
Recognized as one of the leading pioneers in American dance, Willam Christensen, known affectionately as “Mr. C,” played a key role in the artistic contributions to Utah and to the United States. Along with brothers Lew and Harold, Willam began his career with dance lessons from his uncle at the Christensen Academy in Brigham City, Utah. Together the brothers went on to a professional career in vaudeville, and then in 1937, established the oldest ballet company in the United States, the San Francisco Ballet. While with the San Francisco Ballet, Mr. C choreographed the first full-length version of The Nutcracker ballet ever performed in the United States. Christensen moved his family to Utah to nurse his wife’s ill health. In 1951, he founded the first ballet department at an American university, the University of Utah. Shortly thereafter, in 1953, he formed the University Ballet Theatre, the first ballet company ever incorporated into a university. Mr. C’s contributions to dance also include producing the first full-length version of Coppélia ever to be mounted by an American choreographer and producing the first full-length Swan Lake in the United States. In addition, Mr. C produced the first American Cinderella and his version of Stravinsky’s The Firebird. In 1963, Willam Christensen, in conjuction with Glenn Walker Wallace, founded Ballet West under the name Utah Civic Ballet. Willam served as Artistic Director for Ballet West, and, under his direction, Ballet West has grown to become one of America’s leading ballet companies. After retiring as Artistic Director in 1978, Mr. C founded the Christensen Academy and continued teaching well into his 90’s. He served as special artistic advisor of Ballet West’s annual performances of The Nutcracker up until the time of his death, October 14, 2001. Reporting of his death at the age of 99, the San Francisco Chronicle called him, “the grandfather of American ballet.”
Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky COMPOSER, THE NUTCRACKER
Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) studied at the Conservatory in St. Petersburg, where George Balanchine later studied piano in addition to his studies in dance. Tchaikovsky is one of the most popular and influential of all romantic composers. His work is expressive, melodic and grand in scale, with rich orchestrations. His output was prodigious and included chamber works, symphonies, and concerti for various instruments, operas and works for the piano. His creations for the ballet, composed in close partnership with Marius Petipa, include Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, and The Sleeping Beauty.

A Gracious Gift By Joshua Jones
On December 5, 2015, Ballet West’s executive team received a call that the Board of Directors of the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation would like to visit with them later that day. It also happened to be opening night of The Nutcracker, so the Company was anxious and excited for the curtain to rise that evening. When Artistic Director Adam Sklute and Vice President of Development Sarah West arrived in the foundation’s offices, just a block from the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre, there was a “lightness,” said Sarah. That is when the Foundation’s directors – Chairman & CEO Robert M. Graham, Spencer F. Eccles, Lisa Eccles Spencer F. “Spence” Eccles, President & COO Lisa Eccles, and Vice President, Treasurer & General Counsel Robert M. Graham – announced they were awarding Ballet West a $2 million grant to fulfill a longstanding dream and need of the Company: rebuild the sets, costumes, props, and special effects for The Nutcracker. “I don’t think there was a dry eye,” said Sarah, “especially when they presented us with a giant nutcracker soldier to celebrate the moment. It was like Christmas morning came a few weeks early!” Spence Eccles and Lisa Eccles sat down in the theatre recently to discuss with Ballet West executives what they call “one of the most transformational projects the Foundation has funded in the arts.” Share with readers some memories of “Mr. C” and The Nutcracker: LISA ECCLES: Well, when I think about Mr. C and The Nutcracker, it’s a pretty amazing story. While most people know that this ballet is one of the most iconic holiday productions enjoyed all around the world, what many people don’t always realize is that it was Mr. C who choreographed the very first full-length production of The Nutcracker for the San Francisco Ballet! Just a few years after that, in 1955, he brought that choreography to Utah. And the rest is history! It’s become Ballet West’s most popular annual production, attracting generations of families just like ours who wouldn’t miss the chance to experience this truly wonderful tradition each and every Christmas season. Why was it important to you and the Foundation to preserve and enhance this production? SPENCE ECCLES: The tradition of the ballet is important, but so is keeping it fresh and exciting for new audiences. Even Mr. C himself updated the sets and costumes back in the 1990’s, but that was 25 years ago. When we toured the production backstage two and half years ago, we saw close-up how tattered it was getting. Costumes were fading and the scenery was held together with miles of duct tape! It still looked beautiful from the audience’s perspective, thanks to Ballet West’s crew, but we could tell it was time to invest and bring new life to Clara, the Mouse King, Continued on page 70

the Sugar Plum Fairy and more to continue to excite and inspire new generations to love The Nutcracker as much as we all have. LISA: It’s such a thrill for our Foundation to be able to make this beautiful new production of The Nutcracker possible. And even with its incredible new sets, costumes and some special, unexpected magic, it’s still Mr. C’s production that will remain very true to its roots and original choreography. The Eccles family has a long tradition of supporting the arts. Why is that so important? LISA: It’s a privilege to carry on the Foundation’s 30-plus year tradition of supporting Ballet West that began with personal gifts from Uncle George and Aunt Lolie Eccles. We continue to build on the strong interest in the arts that has remained important in our Foundation’s grant-making for decades; it’s vitally important to our state and communities. SPENCE: It’s always our hope that our support helps raise up the excellence of the arts and culture in Utah. The artistic talent in our state – of all kinds – is truly remarkable. And, that’s recognized not only here at home, but also around this nation and the world. Ballet West’s touring performances in places like New York and Washington, D.C. attract large and enthusiastic audiences … and they are blown away by the talent and professionalism of this truly world-class ballet company! We are so fortunate to live in a state where our citizens love and appreciate the arts more than in many other places around this country. I’m happy to say that most Utahns recognize the importance of the arts in our state: in education, creativity, innovation, business, the economy… you name it! What are you each looking forward to the most with this “new” Nutcracker? LISA: We’re anxious to see the long-term, overall positive impact this amazing new production is going to have on Ballet West as a company. It has the potential to make a real difference in Ballet West’s growing reputation for excellence. There will also be expanded opportunities, like the possibility of touring to places like The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. It will also grow the audiences right here at home who will be amazed by some of the innovative new things they’re going to experience. SPENCE: And, of course – speaking as the banker I am – we see our support for this new production as a major investment that’s going to pay tremendous future dividends for Ballet West. What do you hope audience reaction will be? SPENCE: I not only hope—but also predict—that audiences will be jumping out of their seats with excitement, amazement, surprise, and enthusiasm! This is really going to be something extraordinary that should not be missed! LISA: I think audiences will feel a warm and wonderful sense of pride and admiration for the talents and dedication of everyone at Ballet West, especially its artistic staff and remarkable dancers. The Nutcracker is often the first ballet that young people see, and I really hope that after experiencing what’s in store for them in this new production, they will be hooked on ballet for life! That will be wonderful!
