F ROM T H E A RT I S T IC DI R E CTOR
Welcome to the first program of our 2014/2015 season. To launch our next 50 years, I chose to present one of the world’s great classics – Giselle. Over the last several years, part of my mission as Artistic Director has been to revitalize and rework the world’s beloved classic ballets. In 2010 I undertook Swan Lake and in 2011 I tackled The Sleeping Beauty. My desire with each reworking was to stay true to the original meaning, structure and much of the original choreography while bringing out the drama and magic that I found inherent in each work. There is, of course historical precedence to doing this – many directors and choreographers have refashioned these well known works over the years since their initial premieres in the 19th Century. And so, I dived into Giselle along with Principal Ballet Mistress Pamela Robinson-Harris (my collaborator on both earlier ventures) with the same goals in mind. I have long loved Giselle and was inspired - and not a little intimidated - by her complicated history. To begin with Giselle is much older than the other works we’ve restaged. Swan Lake and The Sleeping Beauty were both born out of 1890s Imperial Russia. Their style is closer to our contemporary aesthetic of ballet. Giselle harkens from an earlier era of French Romanticism. The original libretto was conceived in the late 1830’s by French ballet critic Theophile Gauthier. Inspired by Victor Hugo’s poem “Fantomes” Gauthier also drew from German folklore to create one of ballet’s most legendary creatures - the Wilis. Wilis are the ghosts of unmarried maidens who were betrayed in love and died before their wedding day. In revenge they prey upon men and force their hapless victims to dance themselves to death. Giselle had its premiere in Paris in 1841 to huge success. Because of that success it was soon being staged in different versions around the world. Giselle also has the unique distinction of being one of the first ballets to have its own original score. Previous ballet scores were compilations of existing music written for other purposes. Composer Adolphe Adam created a wonderfully dramatic and often undervalued score for Giselle that is filled with leitmotifs and subtle layers. But like the ballet scores of the period it is very long. So many ballet companies that staged Giselle following its premiere chose to edit the music differently to suit their own dancers and their own version of the storytelling. Thus beginning a long ballet tradition of reworking a classic. -continued on next page-

Clearly there were many approaches that Pam and I needed to consider. To begin with I had to rethink aspects of the original libretto. I wanted the characters in this decidedly 19th Century ballet to speak to a 21st Century audience. [So I began with questions like Who hasn’t experienced the desperation of heartbreak? What groom hasn’t contemplated a romantic tryst before his wedding night? Why is it that the best friend is always passed over for the bad boy? And is the wrath and fury of Myrthe, Queen of the Wilis, who have been condemned throughout all Eternity to seek an unfulfillable vengeance, really all that supernatural? As I explored, I became increasingly excited that all the characters in Giselle, more than in any of the other great classics, could have a multitude of different motivations behind their actions, and that with four superb casts to work with we would end up with four Giselle presentations filled with different nuances. For stylistic and choreographic concepts for our new Giselle, Pam and I went to a number of sources. The Royal Danish Ballet’s definitive mid 19th Century version, the glamorous early 20th Century La Scala production, as well as dramatic elements from later Russian and Dutch interpretations. By scouring through books, films, videos, dvds and even youtube, we were able to conceptualize how we wanted the steps to be done and the story to unfold. In reconceiving the music, we worked closely with Ballet West Assistant Music Director Jared Oaks. The three of us poured over the rarely used complete original score making cuts and, at times, repeats to help move the action along and enhance the drama. Add to this my modifications of the costumes as brilliantly redesigned by Ballet West Director of Costume Production, David Heuvel, and we have a completely new and unique Giselle that hopefully will illuminate this great classic in new ways but still do this 173 year old masterpiece justice. We are grateful for you patronage and hope you enjoy the performance. Thank you for joining us, Adam Sklute Artistic Director

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the opening production of Ballet West’s 2014-15 Season, the start of our next 50 years. Our upcoming season promises an unforgettable slate of ballets, featuring the great artistic heights, beauty, and magic that has season after season - defined our talented Ballet West Company. From masterpieces such as the haunting Giselle and the classic Swan Lake, to the family fun of The Nutcracker and Aladdin, to the seduction of Almost Tango and the original works of Innovations 2015, Ballet West is remarkable both for its significant role as preservationist and as a forward-moving pioneer in dance. While known for its spectacular art form, we are also welcoming groundbreaking changes this season. In early September 2014, the Company celebrated the grand opening of our newest satellite academy, the Barbara Barrington Jones Family Foundation Ballet West Academy at Thanksgiving Point. This beautiful facility extends the educational outreach of Ballet West solidly into Utah County, proving invaluable training to even more children who dream of one day gracing the Ballet West stage. This winter, Ballet West will also celebrate the ribbon-cutting of our new 55,000-square foot, state-of-the-art home, The Jessie Eccles Quinney Ballet Centre, which is sure to become an instant iconic landmark in Salt Lake City’s vibrant and growing downtown scene. With a diverse and robust touring schedule that includes major stops such as The Kennedy Center in Washington DC, The Joyce Theater in New York City, Victoria, BC, and Dallas, Texas, Ballet West continues to capture the attention of our community, our state, and the nation. We are forever honored to share with the world the magic of your Ballet West, for it is your loyalty and dedication - and that of tens of thousands of other passionate Ballet West fans - that has allowed our collective grand dreams to become reality. T H E S TO RY ACT I
Harvest time in a village in the German Rhineland. Giselle, a fragile young peasant girl, is being courted by a young man known to her as Loys. He is, in fact, Albrecht, Duke of Silesia, disguised as a peasant. Loys vows eternal love for Giselle, but they are interrupted by Hilarion, a woodsman who has been in love with Giselle since they were children. Giselle kindly tells Hilarion of her feelings for Loys. Hialrion is hurt, but more, he is suspicious of Loys, suspecting that he is not who he claims to be. Hilarion vows to uncover the true identity of this mystery man and regain Giselle’s love. The villagers return from the harvest and all join in a dance. But Berthe, Giselle’s mother admonishes the girl for dancing so much. Berthe is afraid for her daughter’s fragile health and demeanor and wants no ill to befall her. At that moment she has a startling premonition. It is of the legend of the Wilis, young women who have been betrayed and died before their wedding day and who must spend eternity on Earth haunting men. This, she fears, will be Giselle’s fate. Berthe leads a reluctant Giselle indoors, and Loys departs. Horns sound in the distance, signaling the imminent arrival of a hunting party. Hilarion returns, and breaks into Loys’ hut as the horns sound again. The hunting party arrives. It is led by the Duke of Courland and his daughter Bathilde, who are seeking sustenance. As Giselle sees to her guests, Bathilde engages her in a conversation. The noblewoman inquires whether Giselle has a beau, and Giselle explains that she is engaged. Bathilde responds that she too is engaged, and asks after Giselle’s fiancé. Giselle looks for him, but cannot find him. Bathilde is charmed by Giselle and requests the Duke’s permission to present the girl with her necklace. The Duke and Bathilde take leave, and the hunting party disperses. Hilarion emerges from Loys’ hut holding his rival’s sword, branded with an elaborate crest signifying nobility. He catches sight of the departing noble party, and connects it with the sword. He feels vindicated, triumphant. But before he can expose Loys’ deception to Giselle, the villagers return. Hilarion hides the sword and leads them in a dance. Giselle’s friends crown her Queen of the Vintage. Everyone dances in celebration of the harvest, including Giselle and Loys. But their revelry is interrupted by Hilarion, who rushes toward Giselle and denounces Loys as a deceiver. He presents the sword as proof. Giselle does not want to believe him. Hilarion summons the hunting party with the horn, and Loys can no longer conceal his true identity. Not only is he the nobleman Albrecht, but he is engaged to Bathilde! Giselle becomes distraught beyond measure. She realizes that she has been deceived and in her shock she goes mad. Abandoning all hope for happiness Giselle takes her own life thus bringing to reality her mother’s premonition.

T H E S TO RY ACT II
The Forest Giselle has been buried in a forest, close to a deep pond. Hilarion comes to grieve at her grave, but senses the presence of the Wilis and runs to hide. Myrthe, Queen of the Wilis, summons her subjects to appear and assist her in initiating Giselle into their sisterhood. Myrthe pulls branches of Myrtle, symbols of death, to begin their ritual. The Wilis hide about the forest as Albrecht, full of remorse, comes to mourn at Giselle’s grave and seek her forgiveness. The ghost of Giselle appears before Albrecht and comforts him, but she cannot forgive him and rejects his offering of lilies. Like the wind she disappears into the woods. Albrecht pursues her. Meanwhile, Hilarion has been found by the Wilis. On Myrthe’s orders, they encircle him and drive him to dance until he dies. Hilarion begs their forgiveness but, as they are vengeful spirits, they show him no mercy. Now Albrecht presence is discovered by the Wilis and Myrthe commands that he too must die. But Giselle intervenes and protects him from the angry ghosts. She is however too new and weak a spirit to overcome Myrthe’s power. Together Giselle and Albrecht must dance until he dies. A weary Albrecht pleads to put a halt to his dancing. His entreaty is refused. Giselle again pleads for his life, but she cannot sway Myrthe. Albrecht continues to dance, until he collapses from exhaustion and at that moment Giselle comes forward and forgives him all his transgressions. The purity and goodness of her heart frees Albrecht from the spell and as the first light of dawn banishes the Wilis. Giselle returns to her grave, her soul lightened by the generosity of her act. Albrecht is left to weep and ponder his actions.

Under Sklute’s leadership BW has toured extensively, appearing three times at Washington DC’s Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (2008 Ballet Across America – Serenade, and two week-long runs of The Nutcracker in 2012 and 2014); a 2013 engagement at Chicago’s famed Auditorium Theater with his The Sleeping Beauty and a mixed repertory program; twice at New York City Center’s Fall for Dance Festival (Les Biches, 2009; Grand Pas Paquita, 2012); and twice at the Chicago Dancing Festival (Serenade 2010; Sinfonietta 2011). In the past five years, the company has also appeared at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in 2011; The Laguna Dance Festival in 2010; Las Vegas with Nevada Ballet Theater in both 2010 (Sinfonietta) and 2012 (Jewels in collaboration with NBT and PNB); and Aspen, CO., New York, NY, Victoria, BC and Dallas, TX all during the 2014/15 season. In 2009, BW graced the cover of Dance Magazine for the first time in 25 years and again was on the cover in 2013. Since 2007, the company has garnered numerous reviews and articles in such publications as The New York Times, The Washington Post, Dance Magazine, Ballet Review, and Pointe to name a few. In 2012 and 2013 Ballet West was the subject of the BBC Worldwide Production’s docudrama television series Breaking Pointe which aired on The CW channel. Sklute has introduced BW to renowned, contemporary choreographers such as Nicolo Fonte, Jiri Kylián, Mark Morris, and Twyla Tharp, among others, while expanding the company’s Balanchine repertoire and adding early 20th century Diaghilev-era masterpieces. In addition to reintroducing lost elements of Christensen’s production of The Nutcracker and reconstructing his The Firebird, Sklute conceived and produced new versions of Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and Giselle. He developed BW’s wildly successful annual Family Series and Innovations programs . A native of Berkeley, California, Sklute began dancing at the age of 16. His early training was at the Oakland Ballet and San Francisco Ballet schools. After only two years of formal study he joined The Joffrey II Dancers (The Joffrey’s apprentice company). Two years later he was asked to join The Joffrey Ballet. Sklute was one of the last two artists personally chosen by Robert Joffrey. He danced with The Joffrey from 1985 to 2000 and then rose through the ranks to Associate Director in 2005. Sklute became Artistic Director of BW in 2007. He has extensive television and film credits and is an Adjunct Professor at The University of Utah and is an internationally sought after a teacher, lecturer, coach and judge for ballet worldwide.
