elcome to the Grand Theatre’s production of Amahl and the Night Visitor and A Christmas Carol. This is our second year partnering with the University of Utah’s School of Music to bring these two wonderful shows to the Grand’s stage. In Amahl and the Night Visitors, we’ll meet Amahl, a young boy with a habit of telling tall tales. When he meets three kings on their way to witness the birth of Christ, he’ll be given an opportunity to learn about the importance of charity and grace. Then we’ll hear the beloved Dicken’s classic, adapted by Utah locals, Mike Leavitt and Anthony Buck. As we follow Ebenezer Scrooge through a journey of Christmas past, present, and future, we’ll witness the significance of generosity and kindness. I guarantee you’ll leave feeling excited for the holiday season. I’d like to remind you to download The Grand App, free on the App Store or Google Play, to get special behind the scenes interviews with the cast and production staff. The App is also a convenient way to purchase tickets, stay current on what’s going on at the Grand, and be the first to know about all our auditions! Please make sure to join us in February for our hilarious backstage show, The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940, and help us spread the word about the Grand Theatre and the professional quality productions at our community’s theatre! Thank you for joining us and I hope you enjoy the show! Seth Miller Artistic and Executive Director The Grand Theatre

NOTE from the
W
e are pleased to present our second, annual, appearance at the Grand Theatre for this exciting double bill of Menotti’s beloved Amahl and the Night Visitors and Leavitt and Buck’s Christmas Carol. We offer our thanks to Seth Miller and all the folks at the Grand Theatre for this exciting opportunity. We are also excited to be collaborating with Sinfonia Salt Lake again. Thanks to Robert Baldwin for these many years of collaboration and to all of the players. We would also like to thank John Scheib, the newly installed Dean of the College of Fine Arts and his staff at the University of Utah. Their backing and encouragement are greatly appreciated. School of Music Development Director April Walters has also been instrumental in helping to secure funding for opera. Our University President David Pershing has been a long- time supporter of the Opera program. We thank him for the many years of his support and encouragement. We also thank School of Music Chairman Miguel Chuaqui for his efforts to make opera viable and successful. Special thanks to my Teaching Assistant, Daniel Johnson who is directing Christmas Carol and to Michael Leavitt and Anthony Buck, who presented me with the idea of Christmas Carol in the summer of 2016. We’ve made a few tweaks since and hope you enjoy the final version, which premiered last year in this wonderful hall. We would like to thank our entire production team led by Professor Amber Lewandowski who comes to us from the University of Utah Theatre Department. Thanks also to the fantastic University of Utah voice faculty whom the students rely upon for vocal guidance and inspiration, and thanks especially to Dr. Seth Keeton for his expert vocal inspiration!! We also owe a great deal of gratitude to our Music Director, Jeffrey Price. Jeffrey has worked tirelessly with all of us on so many things and it’s very hard to imagine how ANYTHING would get done without him. Once again, huge thanks to Seth Miller and the staff of the Grand Theatre. This was Seth’s idea to present and I can’t say how much I appreciate the chance for us to be part of the season here. Thanks, buddy! Lastly, thanks to YOU for attending our second, annual, Two Crutch Christmas Double Bill! Enjoy!!!!! Dr. Robert Breault Director of the University of Utah Lyric Opera Ensemble

Thinking about college? Think about SLCC!
At Salt Lake Community College, we believe higher education should be available to anyone who desires it. SLCC Promise helps eligible, full-time students pay for their education by covering the cost of tuition and fees when federal grants fall short. SLCC Promise is intended to remove economic barriers and to provide a pathway for SLCC students to complete their degrees.
