THE MUSICAL OF MUSICALS (THE MUSICAL!)
DIRECTOR'S NOTE Welcome to Musical Of Musicals: e Musical! Where else can you get five musicals for the price of one? And all with the same plot! Sound tedious? Nope! In the hands of skilled creators Joanne Bogart and Eric Rockwell, we are taken on a whirlwind tour through the worlds of five of the greatest composers and lyricists (both teams and individuals) of the Broadway stage. First, we step into the optimistically cock-eyed world of Rodgers and Hammerstein where love conquers all, dreams come to life, and every older woman is loaded with more sage wisdom than is humanly possible. Next, we delve into the brilliantly twisted genius of Stephen Sondheim. Here, the lyrics are sophisticated and cryptic, the melodies are algebraic, and the characters are one passenger short of a full subway. It begs the question: Profound? Or unsound? e third installment leaps into the glitz and glamour of Jerry Herman. It’s all about living large and celebrating every second of every minute of every hour of every day of…well, you get the idea. If it has sequins, bubbles, feathers, or sparkles, you’re sure to find it here! en, the grandeur and sweep of “ e” Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber overtakes the stage. In his world, nothing is le unelevated. So, whether it’s cats, phantoms, first ladies, prophets, divas, or train cars, it’s bound to be passionate, dramatic, and rock operatic…and perhaps a little familiar-sounding. Finally, it’s a descent into the underground realm of Kander and Ebb. Always gritty, grimy and a little bit naughty, the tour will take us to a German cabaret, a women’s prison, a men’s prison, and naturally…a touch of Vegas. If Liza Minnelli and Bob Fosse had a baby, it would live here. And just when you thought it was all over, there’s one more trick up its sleeve. (You’re welcome, Marvin Hamlisch.) So for lovers and haters of musical theatre alike, IT’S SHOWTIME! Jim Christian Director

MÁIRE NELLIGAN (Properties Design) received her degrees in theater eons ago and spent some time directing with HerVoice, a feminist theater troupe in Kent, Ohio. Moving west, she worked with local and semi-professional theaters in Arizona. During the Arizona years, she also spent time is a firewatch and a ranch hand, as well as an adjunct professor at Cochise Community College. A er moving to Utah, Máire worked for SLCC’s Fine Arts department before coming to work for e Grand. She loves being the propmaster, and generally considers whichever show she’s currently working on to be her favorite. She will admit, however, that the two “most fun ever” were La Cage aux Folles and Spamalot. DEREK WALDEN (Sound Design) is the Technical Director for CenterPoint Legacy Theatre and is happy to come down to play at the Grand Theatre. He has a BA from Weber State in Theatre Arts and will jump at the chance to work on a Jim Christian Show.
