I’ve known Melissa Leilani Larson for quite some time now and have had the privilege of collaborating with her on several world premieres of her outstanding original works. Her original characters are multifaceted gems that shine through their language, yet they remain relatable and awkwardly human. When adapting Jane Austen, she applies this approach to iconic characters whom we’ve encountered in prose or on screen. These characters are fresh and relatable, while still faithful to Austen’s groundbreaking novels.

When I saw a production of her adaptation of Pride and Prejudice just over a year ago, I sensed that it would resonate with our Grand audiences. The adaptation is swift, humorous, and romantic, appealing not only to existing fans of the novel and its film versions but also to those encountering the story for the first time. I’m admittedly no Austenite, but this rendition of the story has captivated me like no other, and made me see Austen in a whole new light. Whether you’re already familiar with and fond of Pride and Prejudice or not, I hope you’ll relish this tale of people finding their perfect match.

Mark Fossen

Stage Director

Pride and Prejudice

FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that perfect characters do not make for good drama. One could handily make an argument for Pride and Prejudice being the most popular novel ever published in English. The characters of Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy are beloved, as are the words they say to one another. I have heard Austen fans proclaim that this book, as well as the characters within it, are perfect.

Hmm. Let’s pause. As an Austen fan, I’m going to respectfully disagree.

What I love about Lizzy and Darcy is that neither is actually perfect (thank goodness). Let’s be real here; both suffer from pride and prejudice. The story really takes off when both see themselves reflected in the perceptions of the other. Both come to recognize their faults and strive to overcome them.

My hope is that as you watch this performance you will consider Lizzy and Darcy as real people—human beings with wants and tempers who are capable both of making mistakes and fixing them. How characters deal with their individual flaws—how they live as gloriously imperfect people—is the core of good drama. It’s why we come to the theatre again and again.

Thanks for coming.

AUDIO

ENHANCEMENT EQUIPMENT is available for theatre patrons who are hearing impaired. The concession stand has Comtex wireless personal receivers, which allow a patron to sit anywhere in the theatre and receive high-fidelity audio. Because this service is not charged, you will be requested to leave your driver’s license with the cashier until the equipment is returned.

BABIES AND SMALL CHILDREN often make it uncomfortable for other theatre patrons. Therefore, no children under 5 are allowed. Small children must have their own seat.

DISABLED PATRONS may use wheelchair seating areas in the theatre. Each area can accommodate four wheelchair patrons and companion chairs. Ticket prices vary for each section. Aisle seats may be requested by patrons who can be assisted in the transfer from wheelchairs to theatre seats.

BOX OFFICE HOURS are from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday and 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM on the night of the performance, including Saturdays.

LATECOMERS will not be seated in their reserved seats until the end of a scene. Latecomers will be seated in available seating that will not disturb punctual theatre patrons.

LOST AND FOUND will be held by the head usher until the end of the performance. Thereafter, please contact the Box Office at 801.957.3322. All items, after a period of 24 hours, will be taken to Administrative Services in Room 1-060. They may be contacted at 801.957.2201.

PHOTOGRAPHY,

AUDIO, OR VIDEO RECORDING of any performance or the possession of any such device inside the theatre without written permission of management is prohibited. Offenders may be requested to leave and may be liable for damages and other lawful remedies.

THEATRE PARKING is available at no charge in the parking areas on the East and North side of the building. Ticketing will occur when parked in the disabled parking areas without a valid pass. Please note that parking meters are still active during performances.
