THE FINE FAMILY

Iwas a 16-year-old protestant Christian when I first saw the 1973 film of Jesus Christ Superstar. I went with my church youth group, and to say it affected me deeply would be an understatement. What Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber had created was a revolutionary, hip, rock opera. They originally composed it as a concept album in 1970 to bring Jesus Christ down from the stained-glass windows, to make him more real and bring him to the people. And, to perhaps discover a way to explain Judas and Pilate’s roles in the drama of Jesus’s life, death, and ministry. Were their actions reasonable from their points of view?

“How were they to know that Jesus would be afforded divine status by millions and that they, as a result, would be condemned down the ages?” –Tim Rice.

What Rice and Lloyd Webber have created is a modern-day passion play that we hope will convey the more human aspects of the players involved in one of the most dramatic stories of all time.

To quote Bob Dylan (one my favorite modern poets):

Through many a dark hour I’ve been thinking about this: That Jesus was betrayed by a kiss. But I can’t think for you… You’ll have to decide Whether Jesus Iscariot had God on His side.

ABOUT THE PRODUCTION

History

Jesus Christ Superstar was Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s third collaboration (after The Likes of Us and Joseph). As no one was willing to back their idea as a stage show, the pair first produced the single “Superstar,” sung by Murray Head, near the end of 1969, followed by a concept album of the project with MCA in 1970.

The massive success of the record in the U.S. (the album hit number one) created a huge demand for a Broadway production and Jesus Christ Superstar opened at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in October 1971. Starring Ben Vereen as Judas and Yvonne Elliman reprising her role from the concept album as Mary, the show received five Tony nods. The U.K. production premiered the following year with Paul Nicholas in the title role. By 1980, after 3,358 performances, Superstar had become the longestrunning musical in West End history at the time.

Superstar has been revived on Broadway three times, most recently in 2012, and was last seen in London in 2019’s award-winning Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre production at the Barbican. Twice adapted into a film, Superstar has been professionally produced in 42 countries around the world.

On Easter Sunday, April 1, 2018, NBC aired a live concert version of the show, featuring John Legend as Jesus, Sara Bareilles as Mary Magdalene, Brandon Victor Dixon as Judas, Alice Cooper as King Herod, Norm Lewis as Caiaphas, and Ben Daniels as Pilate.

Trivia

Tim Rice says he was initially inspired by the Bob Dylan lyric, “I can’t think for you, you’ll have to decide, did Judas Iscariot have God on his side?” from the song, “With God on Our Side.”

Urban legend has it that John Lennon was offered the role of Jesus on December 3, 1969. He wasn’t—the story was the result of a journalist making mischief when interviewing Rice.

In the early 1970s, the Vatican’s radio station played the album, although the official Vatican newspaper frowned on it. Meanwhile, some U.S. stations played the whole double album without commercials.

As a result of the original Broadway production, Andrew Lloyd Webber won the 1972 Drama Desk Award for “Most Promising Composer.”

ENHANCEMENT EQUIPMENT is available for theatre patrons who are hearing impaired. The concession stand has Comtex wireless personal receivers, which allow a patron to sit anywhere in the theatre and receive high-fidelity audio. Because this service is not charged, you will be requested to leave your driver’s license with the cashier until the equipment is returned.

BABIES AND SMALL CHILDREN often make it uncomfortable for other theatre patrons. Therefore, no children under 5 are allowed. Small children must have their own seat.

DISABLED PATRONS may use wheelchair seating areas in the theatre. Each area can accommodate four wheelchair patrons and companion chairs. Ticket prices vary for each section. Aisle seats may be requested by patrons who can be assisted in the transfer from wheelchairs to theatre seats.

BOX OFFICE HOURS are from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday and 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM on the night of the performance, including Saturdays.

LATECOMERS will not be seated in their reserved seats until the end of a scene. Latecomers will be seated in available seating that will not disturb punctual theatre patrons.

LOST AND FOUND will be held by the head usher until the end of the performance. Thereafter, please contact the Box Office at 801.957.3322. All items, after a period of 24 hours, will be taken to Administrative Services in Room 1-060. They may be contacted at 801.957.2201.
