KURT’S CHRISTMAS MESSAGE

“Peace on Earth”

F

or the first time in the 31 years that I have been “jingle belling” and “decking musical halls,” I have given my annual Christmas show a new name. I’ve added the holiday phrase “Peace on Earth” to the traditional “A Kurt Bestor Christmas.” I, like many of you, have felt that the din of news, political, and social media has reached earshattering and mind-numbing levels and have struggled to know how to deal personally with the negativity and incivility that have weighed me down. It was even a little more difficult a few months ago as I began my show preparation to get in the mood to compose, arrange, and plan this year’s show. It was only when I thought of the phrase “Peace on Earth” and placed things in that elevated perspective that I felt ready to tackle this year’s show. I have concluded that the Christmas season with its sights, sounds, and smells is the perfect vehicle to transport us, if only for a few hours, to memories of sweet Christmases past and to remind us of the message of love which is the heart of the season. Tonight, my Christmas wish for all of you, is to allow the music, lighting, and laughter to fill you with the peace and joy of the season and then, to take that feeling, “wrap it up” and give it to as many people as you can. Oh, and don’t forget the rest of the phrase following “Peace on Earth.” It’s “Good will to All!” Thanks for being here tonight and here’s wishing you the very best this Christmas season. Kurt 4

Jingle Bus, a free downtown circulator

Giving & Giving Back By Ryan Mack, Downtown Alliance The holidays in downtown SLC are a magical time. From the light-wrapped trees to the thousands of shoppers that fill our malls, the streets of downtown are vibrant and chock-full of cheer. Salt Lakers take our holiday season very seriously, and gift-giving is no exception! Don’t get stressed about what you’re going to give, follow this downtown SLC shopping guide to find everything you’ll need for those especially hard to shop for friends and family.

red HOST parking meter on their feet. Donations can be made online at slchost.org. This gift is truly a win-win.

Give Back:

While you’re out shopping, you can also turn spare change into real change by feeding one of the red HOST (Homeless Outreach Service Team) parking meters you’ll see around downtown.

The holidays offer time to reflect on what you’re grateful for as well as how you can lend a hand to help those in need. Instead of regifting that unwrapped toaster oven that’s been sitting in your storage since last holiday season, consider making a donation to one of your local homeless service providers. Your contribution can be made in a friend or loved one’s name and will go directly to helping someone get back

Salt & Honey: For some of us, making a handmade gift is out of the question and would probably do more harm than good. Fortunately, shops like Salt

Not only are you picking up a thoughtful gift, but you’re also helping support local artists and creators. This store is easy to get lost in, you might end up leaving with more gifts for yourself than for your friends.

Rio Grande Winter Market:

Shop Small: Skip the last minute online shopping spree, downtown is home to dozens of boutique storefronts with one-ofa-kind gifts. For one of the densest small biz hubs, head over to the Broadway District (300 S. 200 East). Once there, you’ll find antique shops, clothing stores, coffee, art galleries, record stores plus several fitness clubs and restaurants. With so many options it can be difficult to choose a gift. Not sure what to get? A gift card never hurts!

An extension of the wildly popular Summer Market in Pioneer Park, the Rio Grande Winter Market (300 S Rio Grande St, slcfarmersmarket. com) runs weekly and boasts more than 70 farmers and food purveyors. Small batch producers will sell local meats, cheeses, and baked goods from vendors across Utah. In addition to giving the gift of food, during the month of December, you’ll be able to find a plethora of handmade arts and crafts that will make great gifts for the holiday season.

Transportation Pro Tip: Getting around from shop to shop can require a lot of parking and walking. Consider utilizing UTA’s Free Fare Zone in downtown. You can also hop on the Jingle Bus, a free downtown circulator that takes riders from The Gateway to City Creek Center, the Gallivan Center and back. We hope you enjoy A Kurt Bestor Christmas.
