General Information Audio Enhancement Equipment is available for theatre patrons who are hearing-impaired. The Box Office has Comtex wireless personal receivers which allow a patron to sit anywhere in the theatre and receive high fidelity audio. Because there is no charge for this service, you will be requested to leave your driver’s license with the cashier until the equipment is returned. Babies and Small Children often make it uncomfortable for other theatre patrons. Therefore, no children under 5 are allowed. Small children must have their own seat. Disabled Patrons may use wheelchair seating areas in the theatre. Row D – left & right – accommodate four wheelchair patrons and companion chairs. Seating is also available in the rear of the theatre for four additional wheelchairs and companion chairs. Ticket prices vary for each section. Aisle seats may be requested by patrons who can be assisted in the transfer from wheelchairs to theatre seats. Box Office Hours are 12:00PM to 5:00PM Monday through Friday and 12:00PM to 8:00PM on the night of a performance, including Saturdays.
Latecomers will not be seated in their reserved seats until the end of a scene. Latecomers will be seated in available seating that will not disturb punctual theatre patrons. Lost and Found will be held by the head usher until the end of the performance. Thereafter, please contact the Box Office at 801. 957.3322. All items, after a period of 24 hours, will be taken to Administrative Services in Room 1-060. They may be contacted at 801.957.3301. Photography, Audio or Video Recording of any performance or the possession of any such device inside this theatre without the written permission of management is prohibited. Offenders may be requested to leave and may be liable for damages and other lawful remedies. Theatre Parking is available at no charge in Student Parking areas on the East side of the building. Patrons who are unable to walk from the parking area to the theatre may be dropped off and picked up at the building doors on the North side of the College. Ticketing will occur when parked in the disabled parking areas without a proper Utah pass. Please note that parking meters are still active during performances.

President’s Message
T
hank you for joining us for the fourth show of our 2013-2014 season! The hilarious comedy, Noises Off, premiered at the Lyric Theatre of Hammersmith, London in 1982. Author Michael Frayn first came up with the idea for the script while watching the backstage action of a 1970 farce where he first noticed “the farce was funnier from behind.” Originally intended for two people, he re-wrote the play several times to expand the number of characters (and the number of acts.) The play-within-a-play as we know it today was finally presented in 1982. The non-stop pace, witty dialogue, and physical comedy charmed British audiences. When Noises Off transferred to Broadway in 1983, the production was nominated for several Tony Awards, including Best Play. The same production also won a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Ensemble. The original Broadway cast ran 553 performances, and countless revivals have garnered even more Tony and Drama Desk Awards. Our cast is delighted to bring you this classic comedy, brought to life on the Grand Stage through our signature brand of talent and artistry. Salt Lake Community College and the Grand Theatre are proud to offer outstanding resources – like this wonderful theatre – for all in our community to enjoy. The changes here at South City Campus expanded our capability to bring arts to the community through our new, state of the art classrooms and facilities. SLCC is truly the community’s college and we invite you to explore all we offer by taking a tour of our new Center for Arts and Media. N
oises Off is one of my very favorite shows! Ever since I saw it for the first time 15 years ago, I’ve wanted to do a production of it. It’s so brilliantly written and so much fun that no matter how many times I see it, I always find myself laughing out loud. We’re very fortunate to have Anne Stewart Mark (Director) returning to the Grand. She has put together a wonderful cast and an amazing show. Noises Off is a Two for the Price of One show, giving the audience a simultaneous viewing of a traditional sex farce, Nothing On and the backstage comedy that develops during Nothing On’s final rehearsal and tour. The Noises Off chaos really begins as the characters make their exits from Nothing On only to find themselves out of the frying pan and into the fire of what’s going on backstage. Tensions rise as the “showmances” start to take their toll on the company, leading towards a disastrous final performance. The Grand is so thrilled to bring you this hilarious show, and we hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we do! I
have a long history with Noises Off going back to 1982 when I saw the original London production at the Savoy Theatre starring Patricia Routledge, (better known to American audiences as Hyacinth Bucket in the British television series: Keeping Up Appearances.) I was delighted then with the brilliant construction of the play-within-the-play and the familiar actor-types and theatre in-jokes, and continue to be so to this day. But, an audience needs no prior knowledge to thoroughly enjoy themselves. Familiarity with typical human behavior gone amok will suffice. Jealousy, rage, addiction, stupidity, and many of the other deadly sins pushed to extremes are what inhabit any good farce. And this is not just a good farce; it’s the best! Noises Off has been described as: “A play in three acts that goes from amazing hullabaloo to something painfully funny.” The first act is the rehearsal of a sex farce haltingly performed and grandly directed by a man who regularly compares himself to God. The second is a choreographed backstage view of the play’s deterioration as the action borders on chaos. And the third is the show itself gone “sublimely, perfectly wrong.” When I first auditioned for a role in the play, I thought I was a natural for Brooke/Vickie, but my dear friend Charles Morey saw me as Belinda, and for that and many other things, I thank him heartily. I played her 5 times under his direction and I would be kidding myself - and everyone else - if I didn’t confess that those productions have influenced this one very directly. I must also say that I am very familiar with all the changes and re-writes Mr. Frayn has made to his hilarious opus and I have also borrowed from each of them. Belinda takes great satisfaction from being in charge of everything and everyone, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be directly in charge of this production. What we have composed here at the Grand is a damn good rendition of a hilarious farce, with a great cast of actors, a well built set, handsome costumes, and bright lighting. All we need now is your participation to complete the wonderful concoction that is farce. Anne Stewart Mark Director

Who’s Who – Cast Daniel Beecher (Garry) was last seen at the Grand playing Doctor Gibbs in Our Town and in last season’s critically acclaimed Death of a Salesman. Elsewhere in Utah, he’s been at SLAC (Course 86 b in the Catalogue, The Caretaker, etc) Pioneer Theater Co. (Peter Pan, King Lear, etc), Salt Lake Shakespeare (Macbeth, As You Like It, etc), Utah Contemporary Theater (Dirty Blonde), the Davis Arts Council (Romeo and Juliet, Midsummer Night’s Dream), and others. Sallie Cooper (Dotty) is thrilled to be working at the Grand Theatre in one of her favorite shows. Having been involved in theatre for over 35 years, Sallie’s theatre endeavors are diverse, including: co-founding the Zion Repertory Theatre Company, teaching high school theatre, pursuing an MFA in Directing and recently trying her hand at playwriting. Sallie also worked several summers with the Utah Shakespearean Festival and has video-directed/edited a 5-part video series entitled Playing Period Theatre. Favorite roles include Widow Corney in Oliver!, Yente in Fiddler on the Roof, Gaye Wellington in You Can’t Take it With You, Miss Flannery in Thoroughly Modern Millie and Ouiser in Steel Magnolias. Jared Evans (Frederick) is excited to be making his debut at the Grand. His most recent local performances include Malvolio in Twelfth Night and Horatio in Hamlet with Utah Shakespeare in the Park. Favorite roles include Angelo (Measure for Measure), Nurse (Romeo and Juliet), Charlie (Seascape), and Big Daddy (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof).
Maggie Goertzen (Belinda) marks her third season with the Grand. Previously seen in Death of a Salesman and Xanadu, she is so grateful for the chance to play on this beautiful stage again. Maggie graduated from Weber State with a degree in Musical Theatre, and has been working across the valley as an actor whenever possible. Favorite roles include Lydian Emerson in Charm and Octect Member in A Christmas Carol. Dusty Heyrend (Tim) is a graduate of Idaho State. He has performed in theaters across Idaho, Washington, and Montana. He is new to the Salt Lake theatre world and is worming his way into the radio scene here as well. You can hear him on Alt 94.9 and sometimes filling in for traffic reporters on Cumulus Media stations. David Marsden (Lloyd) has appeared in over 60 local productions over the past 22 years. He most recently starred at Centerpoint Legacy as Max in The Sound of Music and at Hale Centre as Froggy in The Foreigner. Some of his favorite roles include: Paul (Barefoot in the Park), Pirate King (The Pirates of Penzance), Luther Billis (South Pacific), Nathan Detroit (Guys & Dolls), Rutledge (1776), Clive (See How They Run), Gaston (Beauty and the Beast), Roger Marshall (Pirated!), Vinnie (Lucky Stiff), Edna (Hairspray), and Moonface (Anything Goes). Haley McCormick (Poppy) is excited to be making her Grand Theatre debut. She was last seen in Alligator Press’ Production of The Righteous and Very Real Housewives of Utah County and before

Who’s Who – Cast and Creative Staff that lived in Philadelphia, where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts. She would like to thank all involved and her husband Andy. Lauren Rathbun (Brooke) celebrates her second production with the Grand, previously appearing as Lucinda in Into the Woods. She is thrilled to work with such a creative team in her absolute favorite play! Lauren is a junior in the BFA Musical Theatre program at the University of Utah. Other favorite roles include Beggar Woman in Sweeney Todd, Lord/Lady Montague in Romeo and Juliet, and Winnifred in Once Upon a Mattress. Enjoy the show! Doug Vandergrift (Selsdon) finds the smell of the theater still haunting after several decades of performing and directing. His favorite role is always the one he’s playing currently. His long list of credits outside the theater includes television, motion picture work, and video games. He started his career as a story director on the following shows: G.I. Joe, Batman the Animated Series, My Little Pony, and the Emmy award winning Jim Henson’s Muppet Babies.
Who’s Who – Creative Staff Ashley Barentine (Lighting Design) is excited to be making her design debut at the Grand after spending the past six years as the Master Electrician. Previous design credits include Grease, Peter Pan, Dracula, Footloose and The Crucible for Syracuse High School. She currently spends her days in the retail department at Oasis Stage Werks, where she is a veteran Sales Associate and her weekends supervising students at the Francoise D College where she graduated in 2010 with a Cosmetology License. Ashley is excited to bring this classic British door-farce to the Grand Theatre’s audience, and she is grateful for the opportunity to design in a space she is familiar with and with friends whose company she enjoys. Kyle Becker (Scenic Design) has designed and constructed projects in California, Oklahoma and Florida. Locally, he has designed and constructed sets for the Greek Theatre Festival in Salt Lake City, and Youth Theatre at the University of Utah. He received his MFA from the University

of California-Irvine with an emphasis in Scene Design. He taught design and technical theatre at the University of Central Oklahoma, University of Central Florida, and currently teaches Scenography, Computer Drafting and Design, Scene Painting and Stagecraft for the University of Utah. Natalie Colony (Asst. S.M.) is currently a junior at Westminster College pursuing a B.F.A. in Technical Theatre with an emphasis in stage management and lighting design. This is her second production with the Grand Theatre, after working on Fame as the Assistant Stage Manager. Some previous work includes Three Sisters (Stage Manager), Curtains (Sound Design), The Diviners (Stage Manager), The Seahorse (Lighting Design), and Almost, Maine (Set Design), all with Westminster College. She also has worked with the Utah Children’s Theatre, and Such Stuff Productions. Joe Killian (Sound Design, S.M.) holds a B.F.A. in sound design and stage management from the University of Utah. He currently serves as the resident stage manager for the Grand where audiences may vaguely recall reading his name in programs for La Cage Aux Folles, Into The Woods, Oliver!, etc. Recently, he stage managed Utah Opera’s Salome and Fatal Song. Mr. Killian is a free-lance sound designer for film, video games and the performing arts. His work on Confessions of a Mormon Boy was heard in London’s West End and at the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland. Theatrical designs include four seasons with Salt Lake Shakespeare Company and a slew of shows at the Grand, including Our Town, Death of a Salesman, The Crucible, Miss Evers’ Boys and Eurydice. An online portfolio can be found at: www.joekillian.com Seth Miller (Exec. Producer, T.D.) came to work at the Grand Theatre in 2007 as the Technical Director. He is now in his sixth season with the Grand and is currently the Executive Producer. He started out working in the Local 99 stage hands union, after which he attended the University of Utah for a degree in theatrical design. Seth began working at Lagoon Amusement Park in 1997 for their Entertainment
Who’s Who – Creative Staff Department as Staff Lighting Designer and still designs lights for their shows today. From 20012006 he worked at The Egyptian Theatre in Park City. He also works as a free-lance Lighting Designer for a variety of local theatre companies, as well as many corporate events around the country, including Walt Disney World for Disney Event Group and Harley Davidson’s Annual National Dealer’s Conventions. Máire Nelligan (Properties Design) received a B.F.A. in theatre from Marietta College before attending graduate school at AU. She worked as a techie, a designer, an actor, and a director in the Midwest and Southwest before moving to Salt Lake. Máire took over as Properties Master for the Grand several seasons ago, debuting with Man of La Mancha. While her favorite show tends to be whichever she is currently working on, Miss Evers’ Boys and The Wizard of Oz are particularly memorable, and dressing last season’s La Cage aux Folle may well go down as the most fun ever. Máire also works part-time for SLCC’s Fine Arts Department. Past performances include roles in Fuddy Meers, On the Verge and Dead Man’s Cell Phone. Directing experiences include The Good Doctor and Kaleidoscope. Amanda Reiser (Costume Design) is charmed to work on this wonderful show after designing Fame, Our Town and Once on this Island, La Cage aux Folles, Death of a Salesman, and Into the Woods at the Grand. Previously, she has worked with Salt Lake Shakespeare Company on Taming of the Shrew, Henry VI Part I, Comedy of Errors, and Two Gentlemen
of Verona. She has also been involved with The Babcock Theatre’s: The Would-Be-Gentleman, Hay Fever, the premier production of Fever, and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. She received her degree from University of Utah’s Performing Arts Design Program. When not at the Grand she works as a stitcher at Hale Centre Theatre. Carolina Silva (Asst. S.M.) is a senior double majoring in Theatre and Psychology at Westminster College. She is excited to work on her first show at the Grand. Recent productions include Three Sisters (Set Design), The Light in the Piazza (Stage Manager), and In the Next Room (Set Design). Carolina is also the Music Events Coordinator at Westminster. Carolina will be graduating with a BFA and BS in May, and pursuing a PhD in Education in the fall. Anne Stewart Mark (Director) returns to the Grand to direct one of her favorite plays of all time, Noises Off. Previously she has directed Oliver!, Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters’ First 100 years, The Trip to Bountiful , Godspell and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum here. For other theatres in the valley, she has directed Sexsting and two shorts in The Water Project for the Salt Lake Acting Company; Assassins and Chicago for DarkHorse Productions. She also assisted Charles Morey on The Foreigner for Pioneer Theatre Company and directed Talking Wales Finding Sir Formidor, Hejira, and Neglect for Utah Contemporary Theatre. Her acting credits are many and varied, and she has been a proud member of Actors’ Equity for more than 30 years.

Behind the Dressing Room Doors DOTTY OTLEY (Mrs. Clackett) makes a welcome return to the stage to create the role of Mrs. Clackett after playing Mrs. Hackett, Britain’s most famous lollipop lady (‘Ooh, I can’t ‘ardly ‘old me lolly up!’) in over 320 episodes of TV’s On the Zebras. Her many stage appearances include her critically acclaimed portrayal of Fru Såckett, the comic char in Strindberg’s Scenes from the Charnelhouse. Her first appearance ever? In a school production of Henry IV Part I – as the old bag-lady, Mrs. Duckett. BELINDA BLAIR (Flavia Brent) has been on the stage since the age of four, when she made her debut in Sinbad the Sailor at the old Croydon Hippodrome as one of Miss Toni Tanner’s Ten Tapping Tots. She subsequently danced her way round this country, Southern Africa, and the Far East in shows like Zippedy-Dooda! and Here Comes les Girls! More recently she has been seen in such comedy hits as Don’t Mr. Duddle!, Who’s Been Sleeping in my Bed?, and Twice Two Is Sex. She is married to scriptwriter Terry Wough, who has contributed lead-in material to most of TV’s chat shows. They have two sons and three retrievers. GARRY LEJEUNE (Roger Tramplemain) while still at drama school won the coveted Laetitia Daintyman Medal for Violence. His television work includes Police!, Crime Squad, Swat, Forensic, and The Nick, but he is probably best-known as ‘Cornetto’, the ice-cream salesman who stirs the hearts of all the lollipop ladies in On the Zebras. SELSDON MOWBRAY (Burglar) first ‘trod the boards’ at the age of 12 – playing Lucius in a touring production of Julius Caesar, with his father, the great Chelmsford Mowbray, in the lead. Since then he has served in various local reps, and claims to have appeared with every company to have toured Shakespeare in the past half-century, working his way up through the Mustardseeds and the various Boys and Sons of, to the Balthazars, Benvolios, and Le Beaus; then the Slenders, Lennoxes, Trinculos, Snouts, and Froths; and graduating to the Scroops, Poloniuses, and Aguecheeks. His most recent film appearance was as Outraged Pensioner in Green Willies. BROOKE ASHTON (Vicki) is probably best known as the girl wearing nothing but ‘good, honest, natural froth’ in the Hauptbahnhofbrau lager commercial. Her television appearances range from Girl at Infants’ School in On the Zebras to Girl in Massage Parlour in On Probation. Cinemagoers saw her in The Girl in Room 14, where she played the Girl in Room 312. “The most important technological advance in history, so far as the maintenance of moral standards is concerned, was the invention of the keyhole.” –George Santayana FREDERICK FELLOWES (Philip Brent) has appeared in many popular television series, including Calling Casualty, Cardiac Arrest!, Out-Patients, and In-Patients. On stage he was most recently seen in the controversial all-male version of The Trojan Women. He is happily married, and lives near Crawley, where his wife breeds pedigree dogs. ‘If she ever leaves me,’ he says, ‘it will probably be for an Irish wolfhound!’ ROBIN HOUSEMONGER (Author) was born in Worcester Park, Surrey, into a family ‘unremarkable in every way except for an aunt with red hair who used to sing all the high twiddly bits from The Merry Widow over the tea-table.’ He claims to have been the world’s most unsuccessful gents hosiery wholesaler, and began writing ‘to fill the long hours between one hosiery order and the next.’ He turned this experience into his very first play, Socks Before Marriage, which ran in the West End for nine years. Two of his subsequent plays, Briefs Encounter and Hanky Panky, broke box office records in Perth, Western Australia. Nothing On is his seventeenth play. LLOYD DALLAS (Director) ‘read English at Cambridge, and stagecraft at the local benefits office.’ He has directed plays in most parts of Britain, winning the South of Scotland Critics’ Circle Special Award, and going on to a highly successful season for the National Theatre of Sri Lanka. In recent years he has probably be-come best known for his brilliant series of ‘Shakespeare in Summer’ productions in the parks of the inner London boroughs. ‘Desperation tells a thousand tales – and each of those thousand begets a thousand more.’ – Moldovian proverb
