Director’s Note Dear Patron, Welcome to Odyssey’s Spring Repertory Season, where the dancers stretch their artistic muscle and create new, exciting works. Shut Up and Dance will round out the Company’s 24th year, before we’re off on our 13th consecutive European tour--shows every night in a different city, for a wild three weeks; standing room only and standing ovations, and this year, Israel, too! For the fifth year, The ReduxNut-Cracker, our updated version of the Christmas classic, was great fun to put together and was well received by our audiences, proving that we have found our own little niche of the valley’s holiday entertainment market, in Ogden and St. George, too. We are happy to reprise the full-length MJ. What started as just part of an evening is now a hit in Utah as well as abroad. Purple Rain, our tribute to Prince, is back by popular demand. Act I will consist of three of my classics: Andante, a beautiful ballet work set to the timeless music of Mozart; Solimbula, the amazing acrobatic duet that took the world by storm several years ago; and Jump, the audience favorite in the European tour last year, plus two world premiere works by Company members - a Hip Hop Piece by Diego Ballesteros and a Contemporary work by Laura Brick - both showing the incredible versatility of Odyssey’s dancers. My world premiere of Chicago Nights tells the story of Chicago in the 1920’s, when the specter of Prohibition gave rise to Speakeasys, Jazz and Gangsters. A unique show with an intoxicating variety of dance styles, techniques, passions and emotions! A collection of works by some of the most cutting edge choreographers of the day - from ballet to contemporary, jazz to tap, ballroom to hip-hop - this amazing group of dancers will display not only their technical expertise and amazing versatility, but they will share these amazing stories of the 1920’s Chicago through the tapestry of dance styles available today. Don’t miss any of them! The ReduxNut-Cracker patrons get 10% off their Shut Up and Dance tickets—lots of other discounts available, too. Odyssey Dance Theatre’s ability to captivate audiences around the world has been proven time and again with standing ovations and glowing notices as they blend the classic with the current with accessible ease that has helped create a whole new audience for dance! This production celebrates their talent and ability to speak through the most common instrument that humanity has - their bodies - as they celebrate the empowering connection and liberating force of dance - Truly something for everyone. This work is a reflection on how consumed we have become in our lives and how easy it is to become one-track minded.
