Director’s Note

Dear Odyssey Patron,

Welcome to Odyssey’s 26th and final year of Thriller. And what an odyssey it’s been!

In 1994, I saw that there was this huge pool of talented dancers here who could do everything –ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, ballroom – and would be working regularly if they had decided to move to New York or L.A. I thought it was a shame to see that talent go to waste. And sey Dance Theatre was born.

My concept was to start small and then build up as we could afford. Since we were the new kids on the block, funding was pretty much nonexistent. We relied on ticket sales to make our way. I knew we needed a large show that would be like a ‘Nutcrack er’ for ballet companies, something that would bring a large audience in, and significant income. That’s where Thriller came in; we created an amazing show from a series of Halloween-themed vignettes, and it has become a smash hit.

I believe the thing that has made Thriller unique is that we have taken all of your favorite Hal loween characters and placed them into different tongue-in-cheek settings and contexts. There is a lot of humor in the show, and nothing is left out, from Jason impersonations, to skeletons, to the use of chain saws.

When we first produced this show, we had sold only 50 tickets for four mere performances four days away from opening. So I decided if I was

going to go down - I was going to go down in flames! I knew there was something special about what we were doing - and felt word of mouth might be good - and it was!  Within two years we were selling out!

For years now, we have performed the show in five or more Utah locations with more than 45,000 patrons in attendance; for several years, we even had two companies simul taneously performing in multiple locations. Although we have done new pieces in the show every year, it is amazing how many of the original pieces we put together still remain the staples of the production.

It has supplied the funding for the rest of the season which, in addi tion to Thriller, included Joy to the World, The ReduxNut-Cracker and It’s a Wonderful Life. The Spring Repertory Season Shut Up and Dance has been a dance lover’s buffet with something for everyone.

After a 28-year mission of providing a space for talented dancers to stay in our home state of Utah, as well as attracting talent from all over the world to Utah and creating new and innovative works, Cheryl and I will be onto the next ‘mission’ in our lives, serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Thank you for making our dream a reality and supporting us all of these years. Read on to find out what’s next for Odyssey.

Suzie graduated from BYU with a BFA in Music Dance and Theatre where she performed as a Young Ambassador and won the Theatre Department’s award for Best Supporting Actress and an Irene Ryan Nomination for Ilona Ritter in She Loves Me.

As it started with just her performing as a soloist, she is touched and amazed to see it has grown to include many more acts from her company. It changed the lives of the performers for the better and they are honored that Derryl would trust them for 10 years with the aerial acts.

Darla is the mama of 2 amazing boys and a darling and sassy baby girl. She and her husband Nik Day started a non-profit called 90&9 which promotes healthy living through the performing arts and was their reaction to a world darkening with the challenges of mental health. Darla will be continuing her career as a director and will be retiring as a performer with the close of Thriller. She wouldn’t have it any other way!

$20,000 UFIRST AWARDS IN SCHOLARSHIPS EACH YEAR 5 CAMPUS LOCATIONS TO LEARN MORE SCAN The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial assistance to students and credit union members whose values and goals reflect the credit union and our outstanding community. In order to qualify for this scholarship, you must be a member of UFirst Credit Union and be currently enrolled in an accredited 2 year or 4 year university or college. Each year, UFirst Credit Union awards $20,000 in scholarships to collegiate students. Those funds are awarded to twelve different individuals: two scholarships in the amount of $5,000, and ten scholarships in the amount of $1,000. Each regular semester (Fall and Spring), UFirst will award six scholarships to qualified applicants. This means that if you are not selected to receive a scholarship in the current semester, you may apply again during a subsequent semester. Awardees may only receive one scholarship over the course of their collegiate career. Scholarship funds will be deposited into the recipients’ accounts to be used as they deem necessary for their schooling needs. Awardees are determined by a committee of UFirst Credit Union employees. Selection is made without regard to applicant’s race, color, national origin, religious belief, sex, marital status, age, sexual orientation, or disability. Must qualify for membership and must have a valid SSN/ITIN to join. Membership requires a $10 minimum deposit which must be maintained in a savings account. All applicable taxes, including any federal, state, or local tax liabilities are the sole responsibility of the winner(s). Applications must be submitted by November 30, 2022. Recipients will be awarded January 3, 2023. UFirst Credit Union may use the name or likeness of scholarship awardees for marketing purposes and/or social media. Other restrictions may apply.
