Director’s Note
Dear Odyssey Patron,
Welcome to Odyssey’s 26th and final year of Thriller. And what an odyssey it’s been!
In 1994, I saw that there was this huge pool of talented dancers here who could do everything –ballet, jazz, tap, hip-hop, ballroom – and would be working regularly if they had decided to move to New York or L.A. I thought it was a shame to see that talent go to waste. And sey Dance Theatre was born.
My concept was to start small and then build up as we could afford. Since we were the new kids on the block, funding was pretty much nonexistent. We relied on ticket sales to make our way. I knew we needed a large show that would be like a ‘Nutcrack er’ for ballet companies, something that would bring a large audience in, and significant income. That’s where Thriller came in; we created an amazing show from a series of Halloween-themed vignettes, and it has become a smash hit.
I believe the thing that has made Thriller unique is that we have taken all of your favorite Hal loween characters and placed them into different tongue-in-cheek settings and contexts. There is a lot of humor in the show, and nothing is left out, from Jason impersonations, to skeletons, to the use of chain saws.
When we first produced this show, we had sold only 50 tickets for four mere performances four days away from opening. So I decided if I was
going to go down - I was going to go down in flames! I knew there was something special about what we were doing - and felt word of mouth might be good - and it was! Within two years we were selling out!
For years now, we have performed the show in five or more Utah locations with more than 45,000 patrons in attendance; for several years, we even had two companies simul taneously performing in multiple locations. Although we have done new pieces in the show every year, it is amazing how many of the original pieces we put together still remain the staples of the production.
It has supplied the funding for the rest of the season which, in addi tion to Thriller, included Joy to the World, The ReduxNut-Cracker and It’s a Wonderful Life. The Spring Repertory Season Shut Up and Dance has been a dance lover’s buffet with something for everyone.
After a 28-year mission of providing a space for talented dancers to stay in our home state of Utah, as well as attracting talent from all over the world to Utah and creating new and innovative works, Cheryl and I will be onto the next ‘mission’ in our lives, serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Thank you for making our dream a reality and supporting us all of these years. Read on to find out what’s next for Odyssey.

John Boy (Bubbles the Clown)
John Boy is an actor/recording artist/comedian from New York City.
Thriller might be over but...The Clown Must Go On! John Boy is so excited to announce a Bubbles the Clown solo show coming to Utah in 2023!
As a performer, John Boy has toured North America in the Broadway National Tour of “Cats” (Rum Tum Tugger).
New York City credits include: Missed Connections: A Craig’s List musical (Broadway workshop), Poserville (Julian), Alice In Cyberland (Cheshire Cat), and Tarnish (Greg).
Regional theatre credits include: Cats (Rum Tum Tugger) at Tuacahn Amphitheatre, ODT’s Thriller (Bubbles the Clown), Hair (Berger), Big River (The Duke), Annie (Rooster), and Joseph... (Gad/The Baker).
John Boy is also an award winning choreographer who has had the pleasure of working with Kristin Chenoweth and the original Broadway cast of “Wicked” (benefits and promotional events). Other choreographer credits include: The Glamazons (America’s Got Talent), Nudists In Love (NYFringe), Pippin (University of Illinois), Hair, and Godspell. John Boy is currently working in NYC on new music. His debut cd, “Choked Not Broken” and “The Nocturnal Circus” (featuring the hit song “Skinny Me”) are available worldwide.

Last but not least, don’t forget snapchat at snaptheklown.
Guest Artists
Suzie Balser (Lorena Bobbitt)
Suzie is “Thrill”ed to be joining this final cast of Thriller where she is no stranger to the Thriller stage. She has performed in Thriller several times over the past 15 years. Suzie graduated from BYU with a BFA in Music Dance and Theatre where she performed as a Young Ambassador and won the Theatre Department’s award for Best Supporting Actress and an Irene Ryan Nomination for Ilona Ritter in She Loves Me.
Acting credits include Aheh in Sunfish at the New York ASCAP foundation musical theatre workshop with Stephen Schwartz, Stephanie in the New York production of Katie Thompson and Patrick Livingston’s R.R.R.E.D., Sophie in the Las Vegas production of Mamma Mia!, Nellie Forbush in Tuacahn’s South Pacific, Molly in The Unsinkable Molly Brown, Winnie Tate in Annie Get Your Gun, Laurie in Oklahoma!, Maude in Funny Girl, Mrs Wormwood in Matilda, Demeter in CATS and of course, Lorena Bobbitt in Odyssey’s Thriller.
In addition to the stage, Suzie can be seen in local and national commercials. In conjunction with performing Suzie has taught music, dance, and theatre around the country. She is currently an owner and Artistic Director at Utah’s own Conservatory of Performing Arts (COPA). Thriller has been such a fun tradition for Suzie and her family.
She is excited to share the stage this season with her own little Zombies and Chucky dancers. The scariest things about Suzie include not loving pie, never seeing Wicked the Musical and her ability to avoid making dinner.
Thanks to her own little family of ghouls and goblins for all their support and to the Yeagers for all the memories!
Guest Artists Darla Day (Director and Owner of Aeris Aerial Arts)
Darla Day is the Director and Owner of Aeris Aerial Arts in Sandy and Kaysville Utah. She’s been a professional and principal performer for 14 years with Cirque USA, J&D Entertainment, Cirque Du Soleil, Circus Chimera, Ke$ha, BYUtv, The Dallas Cowboys, Braun Productions, CES Vegas, Houston Opera, Cindy Lapaur, Celebrity Superbowl VIP parties, the David Tutera show, and more.
She has been director, aerial director, and creative director for global conventions with USANA, NUSKIN, New Age, Life Vantage, America
First, Mountain America, Tahitian Noni, Xyngular, Younique, and more. She has been music video aerial director and creative director for Vocal Point, Sony, One Voice Children’s Choir, among others and Director and Creator of 90&9’s production of Fighter. Darla has been performing and working with Odyssey’s Thriller since 2012.
As it started with just her performing as a soloist, she is touched and amazed to see it has grown to include many more acts from her company. It changed the lives of the performers for the better and they are honored that Derryl would trust them for 10 years with the aerial acts.
Darla is the mama of 2 amazing boys and a darling and sassy baby girl. She and her husband Nik Day started a non-profit called 90&9 which promotes healthy living through the performing arts and was their reaction to a world darkening with the challenges of mental health. Together they wrote the show Fighter- a cirque style show about a phoenix rising from the ashes.
Darla will be continuing her career as a director and will be retiring as a performer with the close of Thriller. She wouldn’t have it any other way!
