WELCOME Dear Friends, Welcome to our 70th Anniversary Season! I am delighted to celebrate our rich history while looking forward to another exceptional season of only the finest music and dance. It has been an honor to be a part of creating this exciting collection of performances. As always, Utah Symphony has presented us with a slate of world-class performers and expertly crafted programming. We have worked hard to bring together a mix of beloved and soon-to-be favorites including everything from Beethoven to Wagner! Reflecting on our roots showcasing classical ballet, we can’t wait to experience the Moscow Ballet and the Russian National Ballet here in Ogden, as well as the more contemporary approach brought to us by Dance Theatre of Harlem. There is truly something for everyone. I hope that you have had the opportunity to learn about our new offerings this year. I would like to invite you to consider attending our new Downtown Series at The Monarch. Each concert is a unique fusion of styles presented in a relaxed atmosphere, performed by awardwinning musicians. We have also expanded our Family Series, and moved those concerts to Peery’s Egyptian Theater which will be an exciting experience for children of all ages. And finally, I want to thank each of you for supporting Onstage Ogden by purchasing tickets, donating, volunteering, and spreading the word about our mission. I am confident that our longevity is due to the support we receive from this community. I cannot overstate my gratitude and admiration for those who help us bring the best to Ogden each year! With thanks,

Melissa Klein, Executive Director

ONSTAGE OGDEN

In 1949, Beverly Lund and Ginny Mathei decided they wanted to add even more culture to Weber County. So, for the small fee of $400, they brought the Utah Symphony to Ogden for a single performance. Three hundred people attended the concert. This 1949 concert was a big success, so the women decided to present even more concerts in Ogden. They organized a committee within the Welfare League (later the Junior League) to raise funds for the Symphony Concerts. Then, in 1957, this committee reformed and incorporated as the Ogden Guild. After a few more name changes and the addition of Ballet West performances in 1982, the organization became the Ogden Symphony Ballet Association. Under the direction of numerous board members and long-serving Executive Directors like Jean Pell (27 years), and Sharon Macfarlane (14 years), Onstage Ogden has expanded our programming to include internationally renowned classical dance, vocal, and chamber music. Since our inception, we have presented over 800 performances to tens of thousands of Utahns. In addition, Onstage Ogden actively works to engage and educate younger patrons. For example, our Youth Guild has provided generations of high school students with opportunities to serve. We also offer a variety of education classes, from Masterworks Music Detectives to Music and Dance Explorers. And we are partnering with several local community organizations to expand these programs to reach even more children and students. Onstage Ogden is proud to celebrate 70 years sponsoring only the finest music and dance in the Greater Ogden area. We are honored participate in the enrichment of our community by presenting professional classical performance. Mills Publishing, Inc. ARTISTS’ PROFILE

Third Coast Percussion Guest Artists Third Coast Percussion is a Grammy Award-winning Chicago-based percussion quartet. For fifteen years, the ensemble has created exciting and unexpected performances that constantly redefine the classical music experience. The ensemble has been praised for “commandingly elegant” (New York Times) performances, the “rare power” (Washington Post) of their recordings, and “an inspirational sense of fun and curiosity” (Minnesota Star-Tribune). Third Coast Percussion maintains a busy tour schedule, with past performances in 34 of the 50 states plus international tour dates in Colombia, the United Kingdom, Lithuania, Taiwan, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Canada, and Poland. A direct connection with the audience is at the core of all of Third Coast Percussion’s work, whether the musicians are speaking from the stage about a new piece of music, inviting the audience to play along in a

14

concert or educational performance, or inviting their fans around the world to create new music using one of their free mobile apps. The four members of Third Coast are also accomplished teachers, and make active participation by all students the corner stone of all their educational offerings. The quartet’s curiosity and eclectic taste have led to a series of unlikely collaborations that have produced exciting new art. The ensemble has worked with engineers at the University of Notre Dame, architects at the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, dancers at Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, and musicians from traditions ranging from the mbira music of Zimbabwe’s Shona people, to indie rockers, to some of the world’s leading concert musicians. Third Coast Percussion served as ensemble-in-residence at the University of Notre Dame’s DeBartolo Performing Arts Center from 2013–2018.

ARTISTS’ PROFILE

PUBLIQuartet Guest Artists Applauded by The Washington Post as “a perfect encapsulation of today’s trends in chamber music,” and by The New Yorker as “independent-minded,” PUBLIQuartet’s modern interpretation of chamber music makes them one of the most dynamic artists of their generation. Dedicated to presenting new works for string quartet, PUBLIQuartet rose on the music scene as winner of the 2013 Concert Artists Guild’s New Music/New Places award, and in 2019 garnered Chamber Music America’s prestigious Visionary Award for outstanding and innovative approaches to contemporary classical, jazz, and world chamber music. PQ’s genre-bending programs range from 20th century masterworks to newly commissioned pieces, alongside reimaginations of classical works featuring open-form improvisations that expand the techniques and aesthetic of the traditional string quartet.

16

PUBLIQuartet’s commitment to supporting emerging composers inspired their innovative program, PUBLIQ Access, which promotes emerging composers and presents a wide variety of underrepresented music for string quartet--from classical, jazz and electronic, to nonnotated, world and improvised music. Other unique projects include MIND|THE|GAP, a series of group-composed works developed by PQ to generate interest in new music while also engaging traditional classical music audiences. These unique creations range from “Bird in Paris” (Claude Debussy meets Charlie Parker) to more recent extended works including “What Is American?” (an exploration of Dvorak’s beloved “American” String Quartet) and Sancta Femina (based on themes by three medieval and baroque female composers). Founded in 2010, PUBLIQuartet is currently based in New York City.

ARTISTS’ PROFILE

Quarteto Nuevo Guest Artists

Quarteto Nuevo merges western classical, eastern European folk, Latin and jazz with an organic feel that packs a wallop! Their diverse programs can be tailored to fit anywhere, from an intimate chamber music venue to a large outdoor festival. The ensemble’s razor-sharp precision is enhanced by jazzy interludes, lightly rumbling percussion motifs and mesmerizing rhythms. They effectively meld the music of ancient worlds and faraway places with a contemporary groove that enchants audiences of all ages!

18

Winners of the Beverly Hills National Auditions, Quarteto’s master musicians create emotionally-charged soundscapes with instruments and sensibilities that represent very different world cultures. ARTISTS’ PROFILE

Eighth Blackbird Guest Artists Eighth Blackbird, hailed as “one of the smartest, most dynamic ensembles on the planet” (Chicago Tribune), began in 1996 as a group of six entrepreneurial Oberlin Conservatory students and continues today under the leadership of founding members Lisa Kaplan (executive director) and Matthew Duvall (artistic director). Eighth Blackbird has won four Grammy Awards for Best Small Ensemble/Chamber Music Performance over its 23-year history and has become “a brand-name defined by adventure, vibrancy and quality” (Detroit Free Press). It has commissioned and premiered hundreds of works by established and emerging composers, including Steve Reich’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Double Sextet and works by Andy Akiho, Bryce Dessner, Michael Gordon, Jennifer Higdon, Amy Beth Kirsten, David Lang, David T. Little, Nico Muhly, Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez, Julia Wolfe, and Pamela Z. Through performances in its Chicago home base and at venues across the U.S. and around the world, Eighth Blackbird has brought innovative

20

presentations of works by living composers to tens of thousands of music lovers. The ensemble’s extensive recording history, primarily with Chicago’s Cedille Records, encompasses more than a dozen acclaimed albums. Its most recent release on 37d03d/Secretly Canadian, 2019’s When We Are Inhuman, is a collaboration with The National’s Bryce Dessner and Will Oldham (aka Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy) that features new arrangements by Lisa Kaplan, who also coproduced the album with Dessner. Singing in the Dead of Night, written for Eighth Blackbird by Michael Gordon and Pulitzer Prize winners David Lang and Julia Wolfe, will be released on Cedille Records on June 12, 2020. Other collaborations with some of today’s most wellregarded artists include heralded performers such as Dawn Upshaw and Jeremy Denk, seminal composers such as Philip Glass and Nico Muhly, and genre-fluid composers and performers Dessner, Oldham, Arcade Fire’s Richard Reed Parry, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, My Brightest Diamond frontwoman Shara Nova, and Iarla Ó Lionáird of The Gloaming.
