Fall is always my favorite time of the year. The weather begins to cool off, the leaves start to change, snow begins to creep down the mountainsides, and familiar routines for everyone—students, teachers, families, community organizations and businesses—start again.
Of course if you’re a subscriber, you already know about all the great shows we have in store. If you’ve subscribed or donated to Onstage Ogden this season, thanks for investing in great performances right here in your own community. If you’d still like to subscribe, it’s not too late. In fact this evening’s performance counts as one of the four more shows you can choose to complete your subscription package. Give us a call at the office to get 15% off your remaining purchases for the season.
Fall is also the traditional start to the concert season. All of us at Onstage Ogden are thrilled to be bringing a full slate of engaging, enriching, and entertaining performances to Ogden during our 2022/2023 season. With some 30 performances scheduled, there’s something for everyone this year. Take a moment to visit us online at onstageogden.org to find out more.

This 1949 concert was a big success, so the women decided to present even more concerts in Ogden. They organized a committee within the Welfare League (later the Junior League) to raise funds for the Symphony Concerts. Then, in 1957, this committee reformed and incorporated as the Ogden Guild. After a few more name changes and the addition of Ballet West performances in 1982, the organization became the Ogden Symphony Ballet Association.
In addition, Onstage Ogden actively works to engage and educate younger patrons. For example, our Youth Guild has provided generations of high school students with opportunities to serve. We also offer a variety of education classes, from Masterworks Music Detectives to Music and Dance Explorers. And we are partnering with several local community organizations to expand these programs to reach even more children and students. Onstage Ogden is proud to celebrate 70 years sponsoring only the finest music and dance in the Greater Ogden area. We are honored participate in the enrichment of our community by presenting professional classical performance.

1949, Beverly Lund and Ginny Mathei decided they wanted to add even more culture to Weber County. So, for the small fee of $400, they brought the Utah Symphony to Ogden for a single performance. Three hundred people attended the concert.

BENJAMIN MANIS Associate Conductor
Benjamin Manis joins the Utah Symphony as Associate Conductor for the 2022–23 season, leading the orchestra on tour as well as at Abravanel Hall and the Deer Valley® Music Festival. Before moving to Salt Lake, Manis spent three seasons as Resident Conductor of the Houston Grand Opera, making his debut with Verdi’s Rigoletto. Other highlights of his time in Houston include Carmen, Roméo et Juliette, and five world premieres. Manis returns to HGO in the 2022–23 season to lead productions of Tosca and El Milagro del Recuerdo.
ARTIST’S PROFILE
Before moving to Houston, Manis studied cello and conducting at the Colburn School, where he conducted outreach concerts in public schools across Los Angeles and performed Lutosławski’s Cello Concerto as soloist with conductor Robert Spano. In May of 2019, he completed his Master of Music degree at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, where he studied with Larry Rachleff.
Winner of the 2022 and 2019 Solti Foundation US Career Assistance Awards, Manis has served as cover conductor for the St. Louis, Dallas, and National Symphonies, working with conductors Gianandrea Noseda, David Robertson, and Stéphane Denève. To build bridges between different musical communities through educational, community outreach, and through collaboration with myriad artists, from The Dandy Warhols to Garrison Keillor to Ural Thomas to Corin Tucker (Sleater-Kinney) to Jolie Holland to Peter Yarrow (Peter, Paul and Mary), among many others, and cellists such as Ben Sollee, Maya Beiser and Zoe Keating.
in the Pacific Northwest (Skip vonKuske, Diane Chaplin, Nancy Ives, Gideon Freudmann, Kevin Jackson, to name just a few...). The group developed a threepart philosophy that has mostly remained unchanged over the years:
To perform music on the cello you wouldn’t normally associate with the instrument alongside music from the Western Classical Tradition (from Pantera to Taylor Swift to Kanye West to Elliott Smith, alongside Bach, Rossini, and Saint-Saens, to name just a few...).
But slowly that one-off event became a second, and a third, cellists joined and left and rejoined the group again, to perform in Portland’s most popular clubs. By 2009 the group had evolved into a nationallyrecognized performing, recording and educational group with a revolving cast of cellists. Cello Project (or PCP as their fans affectionately call them) were quickly appearing anywhere and everywhere in North America, from punk rock clubs to symphony halls, from street parties to exclusive private events. By 2010 selfdescribed horde of cellos were spending more than a quarter of the year touring, featuring a diverse repertoire that quickly ballooned to over 1,000 pieces of music.
To bring the cello places you wouldn’t normally see it (from wild dance parties, to formal symphony halls, to street parties, to Millennium Park in Chicago...).
In the fall of 2006 a group of 9 cellists got on stage at Portland’s Doug Fir Lounge to perform western classical music in an informal setting.

Called “one of the most exceptional violinists and fiddlers of his generation” by WGBH, GRAMMY®-nominated violinist and composer Jeremy Kittel’s music inhabits the space between classical and acoustic roots, Celtic and bluegrass aesthetics, and folk and jazz sensibilities. According to Bluegrass Situation, Kittel & Co. has “accomplished a feat of new acoustic, string band-rooted chamber music.” Kittel & Co. includes mandolin phenom Josh Pinkham (named “the future of the mandolin” by Mandolin Magazine), genrebending guitarist Quinn Bachand (a former presidential scholar at Berklee College of Music), transcendent bassist Jacob Warren, and hammer-dulcimer wizard Simon Chrisman (acclaimed for bringing a new tonal flexibility to the instrument).
Kittel & Co.‘s most recent album, Whorls, is a dazzlingly original work, referring to patterns of spirals, an apt metaphor for the undulation between the outsize skills and free-spirited instincts that drive its sound. Premiering as #1 on the Billboard bluegrass charts, EarMilk calls the album “a gentle, genre-bending masterpiece.” As well as creating his own projects, Kittel composes and arranges for artists such as Abigail Washburn, Aoife O’Donovan, My Morning Jacket, Camera Obscura, Jars of Clay, Yo-Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble, Laura Veirs, and the GRAMMY®-winning Turtle Island Quartet (of which he was a member for five years). He has also recorded with artists such as Edgar Meyer, Chris Thile, Mark O’Connor and Mike Marshall.

They broke racial barriers in the US and abroad in the late 19th century and entertained Kings and Queens in Europe. At the same time, they raised money in support of their beloved school.
The Fisk Jubilee Singers continue the tradition of singing the Negro spiritual around the world. This allows the ensemble to share this rich culture globally, while preserving this unique music.

In 1999, the Fisk Jubilee Singers were featured in Jubilee Singers: Sacrifice and Glory, a PBS awardwinning television documentary series, produced by WGBH/Boston.
In July 2007, the Fisk Jubilee Singers went on a sacred journey to Ghana at the invitation of the U.S. Embassy. It was a history making event, as the ensemble traveled to Ghana for the first time and joined in the celebration of the nation’s Golden Jubilee, the 50th independence anniversary.
In 2008, the Fisk Jubilee Singers were selected as a recipient of the 2008 National Medal of Arts, the nation’s highest honor for artists and patrons of the arts. The award was presented by President George W. Bush and first lady Laura Bush, during a ceremony at the White House.

Fischer closes his tenure in Utah with Mahler’s allembracing 3rd Symphony, featuring the women of the Tabernacle Choir. This follows on their recording together of Mahler’s 8th symphony (released in 2017 on Reference Records, after Mahler 1 in 2015 and a disc of newly commissioned works by American composers in 2015). In this farewell season he has also chosen to celebrate Messiaen’s music with a performance of Turangalîla and the release on Hyperion in 2023 of his Des canyons aux étoiles (directly inspired by the breathtaking landscape of Utah). After a transformative 14 years in Utah, including the orchestra’s visit to Carnegie Hall for the first time in 40 years, a Saint-Saëns cycle on Hyperion, and many other highlights, Fischer becomes Music Director Emeritus in summer 2023.
Fischer started out as Principal Flute in Hamburg and at the Zurich Opera. His conducting career began in his 30s when he replaced an ailing colleague, subsequently directing his first few concerts with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe where he was Principal Flute under Claudio Abbado. He spent his apprentice years in Holland and became Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the Ulster Orchestra 2001–2006. He was Principal Guest of the Seoul Philharmonic 2017–2020 and Chief Conductor (now Honorary Guest) of the Nagoya Philharmonic 2008–2011.
