WELCOME Dear Friends, Welcome to our 70th Anniversary Season! I am delighted to celebrate our rich history while looking forward to another exceptional season of only the finest music and dance. It has been an honor to be a part of creating this exciting collection of performances. As always, Utah Symphony has presented us with a slate of world-class performers and expertly crafted programming. We have worked hard to bring together a mix of beloved and soon-to-be favorites including everything from Beethoven to Wagner! Reflecting on our roots showcasing classical ballet, we can’t wait to experience the Moscow Ballet and the Russian National Ballet here in Ogden, as well as the more contemporary approach brought to us by Dance Theatre of Harlem. There is truly something for everyone. I hope that you have had the opportunity to learn about our new offerings this year. I would like to invite you to consider attending our new Downtown Series at The Monarch. Each concert is a unique fusion of styles presented in a relaxed atmosphere, performed by awardwinning musicians. We have also expanded our Family Series, and moved those concerts to Peery’s Egyptian Theater which will be an exciting experience for children of all ages. And finally, I want to thank each of you for supporting Onstage Ogden by purchasing tickets, donating, volunteering, and spreading the word about our mission. I am confident that our longevity is due to the support we receive from this community. I cannot overstate my gratitude and admiration for those who help us bring the best to Ogden each year! With thanks,
Melissa Klein, Executive Director

ONSTAGE OGDEN
In 1949, Beverly Lund and Ginny Mathei decided they wanted to add even more culture to Weber County. So, for the small fee of $400, they brought the Utah Symphony to Ogden for a single performance. Three hundred people attended the concert. This 1949 concert was a big success, so the women decided to present even more concerts in Ogden. They organized a committee within the Welfare League (later the Junior League) to raise funds for the Symphony Concerts. Then, in 1957, this committee reformed and incorporated as the Ogden Guild. After a few more name changes and the addition of Ballet West performances in 1982, the organization became the Ogden Symphony Ballet Association. Under the direction of numerous board members and long-serving Executive Directors like Jean Pell (27 years), and Sharon Macfarlane (14 years), Onstage Ogden has expanded our programming to include internationally renowned classical dance, vocal, and chamber music. Since our inception, we have presented over 800 performances to tens of thousands of Utahns. In addition, Onstage Ogden actively works to engage and educate younger patrons. For example, our Youth Guild has provided generations of high school students with opportunities to serve. We also offer a variety of education classes, from Masterworks Music Detectives to Music and Dance Explorers. And we are partnering with several local community organizations to expand these programs to reach even more children and students. Onstage Ogden is proud to celebrate 70 years sponsoring only the finest music and dance in the Greater Ogden area. We are honored participate in the enrichment of our community by presenting professional classical performance. Mills Publishing, Inc. PROGRAM LATIDO Choreography: José Maldonado Music Composition: Gaspar Rodriguez Dancers & Musicians: The Company What is LATIDO? In the concept of our art, it is the rhythm at which our heart beats giving life to our inner self. But, what gives life to our soul? To find the answer, we must go in search of what motivates us to dance, compels us to move, and manifests our most primitive “I.” LATIDO pays homage to the authentic, to that which never dies. It is an ode to the sounds that made us tremble yesterday, today and will forever; An ode to the flavor of the Spanish and flamenco dance we inherited from our generations past and which constitute the vision and spoken language of today’s artists; A journey into our inner self to find the engine which enlivens our instincts to transform them into dance. SEGUIRYIA Seeking the rhythm that gives life to instincts and transforms movement into art. ONDURA Dancer/Choreography: Lorena Franco Confronting pain and fear while searching for the light in darkness. PODER Showcasing the elegance of pure lines and the simplicity of movement and rhythm. RAIZ Honoring the folklore of our antecedents, the tradition that unites us and gives us strength. INSPIRACION Musical Adaption: Gaspar Rodriguez A testimonial to composers Manuel de Falla, Isaac Albeniz, Joaquin Rodrigo, who gave us sounds to dance by and today gives us a new vision to create. SEDUCCION Dancer/Choreographer: Isaac Tovar Highlighting the intensity of the dance and revealing a world of contrasts.

/ INTERMISSION / SOLEARES Dancer/Choreographer: Fanny Ara The soleares is one of the most serious and most jondo (deep) palos in flamenco. The name soleares is derived from “soledad,” which means loneliness or solitude and its lyrics often convey themes of romantic tragedy and desolation. MUSICA FLAMENCA Composer: Gaspar Rodríguez Musicians: The Company TIENTOS Dancers & Musicians: The Company Choreography: Antonio Hidalgo This 4/4 rhythm dance is majestic and sensual. The movements are often slow and wiry, giving the dancers space to express emotions easily. ALEGRIAS Dancer/Choreographer: Emilio Ochando The Alegrías were originated in the seaport of Cádiz. The word Alegrías means joy or happiness, and the songs are light and carefree in spirit. They can express great intensity of feeling yet the mood is optimistic and high-spirited. FIN DE FIESTA/BULERÍAS The Company The name Bulerías comes from burlar or to make fun. The flamenco party ends por Bulerías, a “jam session” in which everyone takes their turn to “show their stuff.” The baile por Bulerías (bulerías dance) is one of the most vivacious and difficult dances, and requires a great deal of gracia (grace) and sense of rhythm. All pieces are accompanied by Flamenco Vivo’s musicians: Gaspar Rodríguez, Daniel Jurado, Francisco Orozco “Yiyi” and Trini de la Isla. Program subject to change

WHO’S WHO IN THE COMPANY CARLOTA SANTANA (Founder and Artistic Director) Hailed as “The Keeper of Flamenco” by Dance Magazine and honored by the King and Government of Spain with La Cruz de la Orden al Mérito Civil for “all the years of passion, excellence and dedication to the flamenco art,” Carlota Santana is an internationally-renowned flamenco and Spanish dance artist and educator. In 1983, she co-founded Flamenco Vivo with Roberto Lorca; following his death from AIDS in 1987, she was determined to continue their work. In the decades since, she has led Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana’s growth as one of this country’s most successful flamenco companies, with a mission to promote flamenco as a living art form and a vital part of Hispanic heritage. Under Santana’s artistic direction, Flamenco Vivo has premiered more than 20 original works, offering commissions to numerous flamenco artists from Spain and the United States; creations include Bailes de Ida y Vuelta, depicting flamenco’s journey through Latin America; Mano a Mano, a tribute to the bullfighter Manolete; and the contemporary flamenco story-ballet Federico, a celebration of the life of Federico García Lorca. Ms. Santana created the company’s innovative arts-in-education program, integrating Spanish dance and culture with academic curricula, and has pioneered bilingual education initiatives targeted to immigrant populations, as well as other programs addressing the special needs of disabled youth. Beyond the company’s on-going work, she has also been the driving force behind a series of unique special projects, including two flamenco symposia produced in collaboration with Duke University’s Dance Department (2012 and 2015), and the “100 Years of Flamenco in New York” exhibit mounted in partnership with The New York Public Library
for the Performing Arts. The first-ever curated museum show on flamenco in the U.S., “100 Years” ran for five months (March-August 2013) in The Vincent Astor Gallery at Lincoln Center; in his review, New York Times chief dance critic Alastair Macaulay praised the “vitality and pride” of the show, noting: “This vivid collection enriches our ideas of both this genre and this city.” Ms. Santana is on the faculty of Duke University, and has taught at Long Island and New York Universities.
