WELCOME It’s that time of year when our city sparkles a little brighter, and our calendars are as packed as our living rooms with friends and family. Embracing this festive vibe, we’re excited to welcome you to Ballet West’s The Nutcracker and the Utah Symphony’s Here Comes Santa Claus. These performances, and their long histories in Ogden, are like welcoming friends from just down the road for the ultimate holiday party, and you’re the guests of honor. The party continues in the New Year with more great opportunities for families. Wizards young and old can join us for Potted Potter on January 18 & 19—think every Harry Potter book packed into seventy wild minutes. Don’t miss the classic tale Peter and the Wolf brought to life by the Utah Symphony on March 14. If you’re overdue for date night or a night out with friends, come for the Utah Symphony performing alongside the film Casablanca, or let the world’s best guitarists entertain you at International Guitar Night. As always, we are truly grateful to our generous donors and sponsors whose support brings these magical evenings to life. The Onstage Ogden’s 2023–2024 season is funded in part by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Utah Division of Arts and Museums, Weber County Recreation, Arts, Museums, and Parks (RAMP) program, and Ogden City Arts.

In 1949, Beverly Lund and Ginny Mathei decided they wanted to add even more culture to Weber County. So, for the small fee of $400, they brought the Utah Symphony to Ogden for a single performance. Three hundred people attended the concert. This 1949 concert was a big success, so the women decided to present even more concerts in Ogden. They organized a committee within the Welfare League (later the Junior League) to raise funds for the Symphony Concerts. Then, in 1957, this committee reformed and incorporated as the Ogden Guild. After a few more name changes and the addition of Ballet West performances in 1982, the organization became the Ogden Symphony Ballet Association. Under the direction of numerous board members and long-serving Executive Directors like Jean Pell (27 years), and Sharon Macfarlane (14 years), Onstage Ogden has expanded our programming to include internationally renowned classical dance, vocal, and chamber music. Since our inception, we have presented over 800 performances to tens of thousands of Utahns. In addition, Onstage Ogden actively works to engage and educate younger patrons. For example, our Youth Guild has provided generations of high school students with opportunities to serve. We also offer a variety of education classes, from Masterworks Music Detectives to Music and Dance Explorers. And we are partnering with several local community organizations to expand these programs to reach even more children and students. Onstage Ogden is proud to celebrate over 70 years sponsoring only the finest music and dance in the Greater Ogden area. We believe the arts have the power to inspire and uplift, and we are firmly committed to providing everyone in our community with greater access to the arts.

Since 2007, Adam Sklute has expanded Ballet West’s outlook, repertoire, and visibility with exciting Company and world premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure, and greater focus on the Ballet West Academy. He began his career with The Joffrey Ballet, rising through the ranks from dancer to Associate Director. His stewardship of Ballet West has been marked by both financial growth and elevated artistry, and was the subject of The CW Network’s docu-drama, Breaking Pointe, which aired for two seasons. From September 2016 to October 2017, Sklute took on the dual position of CEO and Artistic Director, overseeing both administrative and artistic operations of Ballet West. An internationally sought-after teacher and adjudicator, Sklute has received numerous awards, including Utah’s Enlightened 50 (2014), The Bronze Minuteman Award for Outstanding Service to Utah and The Nation (2015), and Utah Diversity Connection’s Business Award for outstanding commitment to diversity initiatives. Most recently, Sklute was included in Deseret Magazine’s 25 Changemakers of the West for his efforts to build greater equity and inclusion in classical ballet. Michael Scolamiero joined Ballet West after an extensive international search led by Michael Kaiser, President Emeritus of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Mr. Scolamiero previously served as Executive Director of Miami City Ballet for three years, during which time the organization achieved a significant reduction in debt, as well as robust growth in ticket revenue, contributions, and touring income. Prior to Miami City Ballet, Mr. Scolamiero was Pennsylvania Ballet’s Executive Director for 17 years, the longest tenure in the Company’s history and among the longest of any leader of a major ballet company. During his tenure, Mr. Scolamiero led the organization’s first capital campaign, which raised $11.9 million (against a $10 million goal) to build an endowment and fund repertoire expansion. At Ballet West, Mr. Scolamiero has played a key role in transforming the organization’s financial health. No longer using external financing to meet cash needs, Ballet West’s balance sheet is strong after realizing operating surpluses for three consecutive fiscal years. Mr. Scolamiero is currently working with the Board and management on a new strategic plan that will serve as a blueprint for Ballet West’s aspirations as the organization enters its 60th season and beyond.

The Nutcracker begins at the Stahlbaum home on Christmas Eve. Mr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum and their children, Clara and Fritz, are busy preparing for the evening festivities. The guests arrive, including Clara’s godfather, Dr. Drosselmeyer. Dr. Drosselmeyer has fashioned a special gift for Clara, a Nutcracker designed in the form of a small soldier. Clara falls in love with her Nutcracker at once. That night, Clara is unable to sleep without one more look at her beloved Nutcracker. She tiptoes back into the living room and cradles it once more before falling asleep. She is not sure whether she is dreaming, but before her eyes are huge mice playing in front of the Christmas tree that has grown to a tremendous size. The Nutcracker fights with the Mouse King and, in the heat of the battle, Clara takes off her slipper and throws it at the Mouse King. While he is distracted, the Nutcracker stabs him with his saber.
After the battle, the Nutcracker is magically transformed into a handsome prince and, grateful to Clara for saving his life, invites her to accompany him on a journey to the fabled Kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy. En route, they pass through the exquisite land of the Snow Queen and her Cavalier. Act II begins in the land of the Sugar Plum Fairy, where Clara is entertained by an array of divertissements, including Spanish, Arabian, and Chinese dancers, as well as Mother Buffoon, with her many children who appear from under her gigantic skirt. The evening concludes with the grand pas de deux performed by the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. Following the pas de deux, Clara is whisked away with her prince in a sleigh, while waving goodbye to the Sugar Plum Fairy and her magical kingdom.

ARTISTS’ PROFILES Matthew Straw As the new Assistant Conductor of the Utah Symphony, Matthew will work with Creative Partner David Robertson and Music Director Emeritus Thierry Fischer, and will conduct the orchestra in over 70 performances during the 2023-24 season. A two-time winner of the Career Assistance Award from the Solti Foundation US, Matthew became the youngest awardee in the history of the foundation in 2022. In addition, he received the Helen F. Whitaker Conducting Fellowship at the 2019 Aspen Conducting Academy. As assistant conductor he has worked with Kazushi Ono and the Brussels Philharmonic, and Ilan Volkov and the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Salzburg Festival. He has conducted the Des Moines Metro Opera, New World Symphony, and Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and has participated in masterclasses with Stéphane Denève, Cristian Măcelaru, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Neeme and Paavo Järvi, Michael Tilson-Thomas, and Robert Spano. He is a recent graduate of the Eastman School of Music where he received an MM in conducting and holds degrees in music and philosophy from the Oberlin College and Conservatory of Music. Sara Jean Ford Sara is one of Broadway’s most illustrious performers and writers today. Sara can be seen starring in her hit dark- comedy web series, The Aging Ingenue, which she also co-wrote; now streaming on BroadwayWorld.com! Broadway credits include: Christine Daaé in The Phantom of the Opera. Jellylorum in CATS, Smitty in How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, Petra in A Little Night Music and Finian’s Rainbow. Sara holds the unique distinction of performing in two Broadway shows in the same week; Petra in ‘Night Music’ and Christine in ‘Phantom...’. Sara produced, wrote and starred in her own adaptation of Calamity Jane in Concert for sold-out audiences at Feinstein’s 54 Below. 22 / OnstageOgden.org

Claybourne Elder Claybourne Elder is a Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel nominee and was most recently seen on Broadway in the Tony Award-winning revival of Company with Patti LuPone and as John Adams on HBO’s The Gilded Age. He is known for his performances on Broadway in Bonnie and Clyde, Sunday in the Park with George, and Torch Song. He also appeared in Sondheim on Sondheim at the Hollywood Bowl, Road Show at the Public Theatre, Tennessee William’s One Arm (Drama Desk Nomination for Best Leading Actor in a Play) Do I Hear A Waltz at City Center, Allegro at Classic Stage (Lortel Nomination for Best Leading Actor in a Musical), Two by Two (Starring Jason Alexander) and Venice at the Public Theatre.
