Thanks for joining us this evening. As a ticket buyer, subscriber, or donor to Onstage Ogden, I’m certain you join me in the belief that access to a wide variety of performing arts is important for a community like Ogden. It allows for cultural engagement and exposure to different perspectives and ideas. It also encourages creativity and self-expression. Perhaps most importantly, it brings people together and fosters a sense of connection and shared experience. I think our most recent string of performances are great examples of the breadth and variety of our programming.

The Peking Acrobats bring their incredible acrobatic skills and traditional Chinese music to our stage. Storm Large, whose huge personality is only matched by her voice, comes to Ogden for a romantic and perhaps raucous evening with your Utah Symphony. International Guitar Night features a lineup of world-renowned guitarists, each bringing their own unique style and sound to the stage. Empire Wild use their old-school, Juilliard training, to create a sound that is very much new-school. Finally, The Queen’s Cartoonists are here bringing their unique brand of cartooninspired jazz music to our stage.

I am so grateful to the families, individuals, and organizations that donated in support of tonight’s performance. Their generosity brings this engaging and exciting lineup of performers to our community. Thank you for your continued support of live music and the arts in Ogden and we hope to see you at performance again soon. James Fredrick Executive Director, Onstage Ogden

In 1949, Beverly Lund and Ginny Mathei decided they wanted to add even more culture to Weber County. So, for the small fee of $400, they brought the Utah Symphony to Ogden for a single performance. Three hundred people attended the concert. This 1949 concert was a big success, so the women decided to present even more concerts in Ogden. They organized a committee within the Welfare League (later the Junior League) to raise funds for the Symphony Concerts. Then, in 1957, this committee reformed and incorporated as the Ogden Guild. After a few more name changes and the addition of Ballet West performances in 1982, the organization became the Ogden Symphony Ballet Association.

Under the direction of numerous board members and long-serving Executive Directors like Jean Pell (27 years), and Sharon Macfarlane (14 years), Onstage Ogden has expanded our programming to include internationally renowned classical dance, vocal, and chamber music. Since our inception, we have presented over 800 performances to tens of thousands of Utahns.

In addition, Onstage Ogden actively works to engage and educate younger patrons. For example, our Youth Guild has provided generations of high school students with opportunities to serve. We also offer a variety of education classes, from Masterworks Music Detectives to Music and Dance Explorers. And we are partnering with several local community organizations to expand these programs to reach even more children and students. Onstage Ogden is proud to celebrate 70 years sponsoring only the finest music and dance in the Greater Ogden area. We are honored participate in the enrichment of our community by presenting professional classical performance.

ARTISTS’ PROFILE

For the last thirty two years, THE PEKING ACROBATS® have redefined audience perceptions of Chinese acrobatics. They perform daring maneuvers atop a precarious pagoda of chairs and display their technical prowess at such arts as trick-cycling, precision tumbling, juggling, somersaulting, and gymnastics. They push the limits of human ability, defying gravity with amazing displays of contortion, flexibility, and control. THE PEKING ACROBATS are often accompanied by live musicians who skillfully play traditional Chinese instruments; the time-honored Chinese music coalesces with high-tech

special effects and awe-inspiring acrobatic feats, creating an exuberant entertainment event with the festive pageantry of a Chinese Carnival.

Since their founding in 1986, THE PEKING ACROBATS have been featured on numerous television shows and celebritystudded TV specials. These include Nickelodeon’s Unfabulous, Ellen’s Really Big Show (hosted by Ellen DeGeneres), The Wayne Brady Show, That’s Incredible, ABC’s Wide World of Sports, and NBC’s Ring In The New Year Holiday Special. They have also appeared on HDNet

14 / OnstageOgden.org

ARTISTS’ PROFILE

TV’s In Focusseries, and have appeared regularly in 3D on NBC/Comcast’s new 3D Channel. THE PEKING ACROBATS set the world record for the Human Chair Stack on FOX Network’s Guinness Book Primetime television show in 1999: they balanced six people precariously atop six chairs twenty one feet up in the air without safety lines, astounding audiences with their bravery and dexterity. THE PEKING ACROBATS have also made their way onto the silver screen—company members were featured in Steven Soderbergh’s hit film Ocean’s Eleven playing alongside Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt and George Clooney. PEKING ACROBATS’ alumnus Shaobo Qin also appeared in that film’s two sequels, Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen.

THE PEKING ACROBATS achieved another milestone in the fall of 2003, when they made their orchestral debut at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, CA. They performed as part of the Hollywood Bowl’s Fireworks Season Finale, where the company blended their unique brand of acrobatics with the majestic sound of the 100-piece Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, conducted by John Mauceri. Since their Hollywood Bowl debut, THE PEKING ACROBATS have performed with many of the most prestigious Symphony Orchestras in North America today. These include the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra; the Ravinia Festival Orchestra, featuring members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; the San Diego Symphony Orchestra; the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra; the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra; and the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. THE

PEKING ACROBATS return often to the Hollywood Bowl, where they perform with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra as Special Guest Artists.

Over their thirty-two year career, THE PEKING ACROBATS have achieved international acclaim, dazzling audiences around the world. In February of 2005, THE PEKING ACROBATS premiered in Italy on a five-week, twelve-city tour. Their opening in Milan became a spectacular media event that was covered nationally by the Italian press. In city after city, THE PEKING ACROBATS took stage before sold-out crowds, and the reviews were filled with accolades attesting to their superb performances. Since their Italian debut, THE PEKING ACROBATS have performed in seven European countries on their six European Tours between 2005 and today.

THE PEKING ACROBATS are part of a time-honored Chinese tradition, rooted in centuries of Chinese history and folk art. Tradition demands that each generation of acrobats add its own improvements and embellishments; because of this, high honor is conferred upon those skilled enough to become acrobats. THE PEKING ACROBATS seek to uphold this rich and ancient folk art tradition, bringing it to new technical heights while integrating twenty-first century technology. In the words of Clive Davis of the New York Post, “THE PEKING ACROBATS [are] pushing the envelope of human possibility,” combining agility and grace in remarkable feats of “pure artistry.”

American conductor Nicholas Hersh has earned critical acclaim for his innovative programming and natural ability to connect with musicians and audiences alike.

In the 2022–2023 season, Hersh debuts with the Utah, Colorado and Modesto symphonies, and The Florida Orchestra, and returns to the Baltimore, Houston and New Jersey symphony orchestras, and Rochester Philharmonic. Highlights of the prior season include engagements with the National (D.C.), Detroit, Grand Rapids, Portland (ME), and Tucson symphony orchestras, Louisiana Philharmonic, Sarasota Orchestra, and symphonies of Richmond and Winston-Salem, and Peabody Opera. Other recent conducting appearances include the Phoenix Symphony, North Carolina Symphony, and New World Symphony.

Over a remarkable tenure as Associate Conductor of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Hersh created the BSO Pulse series, through which he brought together indie bands and orchestral musicians in unique collaborations; he led the BSO in several subscription weeks, and concerts in and around Baltimore; and he directed the BSO’s educational and family programming, including the celebrated Academy for adult amateur musicians. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Hersh developed and conducted the BSO’s new digital concert series, BSO Sessions. Mixing performance with documentary-style interviews, Hersh introduced the BSO and online audiences to a wide variety of new repertoire, including numerous living composers as well as seldom-performed historical composers. “His commitment to performing works by composers of color,” described BSO leadership, “will continue to inform the BSO’s programming long into the future.”

Hersh also maintains a close relationship with the National Symphony Orchestra, leading concerts throughout Washington, D.C. He stepped in to replace an indisposed Yan Pascal Tortelier, on subscription, to great acclaim.

Hersh is frequently in demand as an arranger and orchestrator, with commissions from orchestras around the globe for adaptations of everything from classical solo and chamber music to popular songs. His orchestration of Beethoven’s Cello Sonata Op. 69 was premiered by the Philharmonie Zuidnederland in January 2022, while his symphonic arrangement of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody continues to see worldwide success as a viral YouTube hit. He also serves as arranger and editor for the James P. Johnson Orchestra Edition.

An avid educator, Hersh has embraced the Young Persons Concert format as a crucial method for orchestras to serve their communities. From 2016–2020, he served as Artistic Director of the Baltimore Symphony Youth Orchestras, and he continues to

be a frequent collaborator and guest faculty at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University.

Hersh grew up in Evanston, Illinois and started his musical training as a cellist. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Music from Stanford University and a Master’s Degree in Conducting from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, studying with David Effron and Arthur Fagen. In 2011 and 2012, he was a Conducting Fellow

with the prestigious American Academy of Conducting at Aspen, studying with mentors Robert Spano, Hugh Wolff, and Larry Rachleff, and has participated in masterclasses with Bernard Haitink and Michael Tilson Thomas. Hersh is also a two-time recipient of the Solti Foundation Career Assistance Award.

Nicholas lives in Philadelphia with his wife Caitlin and their two cats, and in his free time enjoys baking (and eating) sourdough bread.

Storm Large: musician, actor, playwright, author, awesome. She shot to national prominence in 2006 as a finalist on the CBS show Rock Star: Supernova, where despite having been eliminated in the week before the finale, Storm built a fan base that follows her around the world to this day. She was seen on the 2021 season of America’s Got Talent.

Storm spent the 90s singing in clubs throughout San Francisco. Tired of the club scene, she moved to Portland to pursue a new career as a chef, but a last-minute cancellation in 2002 at the Portland club “Dante’s” turned into a standing Wednesday night engagement for Storm and her new band, The Balls. It wasn’t long before Storm had a cult-like following in Portland, and a renewed singing career that was soon to be launched onto the international stage.

In the 18–19 season, Storm performed her one-woman autobiographical musical memoir Crazy Enough at La Jolla Music Society and Portland Center Stage, celebrating the show’s ten-year anniversary. Recent engagements include debuts with the Philly Pops, members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and the Seattle Symphony, as well as return engagements with the Houston, Detroit, Toronto, and BBC Symphonies; the New York Pops; and the Louisville Orchestra, with whom she recorded the 2017 album All In. Storm continues to tour concert halls across the country with her band Le Bonheur and as a special guest on Michael Feinstein’s Shaken & Stirred tour. Alongside Liza Minnelli and Joel Grey, Storm joined Michael Feinstein as special guest with the Pasadena Pops.

STORM LARGE Guest Artist

Storm made her debut as guest vocalist with the band Pink Martini in April 2011, singing four sold-out concerts with the National Symphony Orchestra at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. She continues to perform with the band, touring nationally and internationally, and she is featured on their album Get Happy. Storm has also sung with Grammy winner k.d. lang, pianist Kirill Gerstein, punk rocker John Doe, singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright, and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer George Clinton.

She debuted with the Oregon Symphony in 2010, and has returned for sold out performances each year thereafter. Storm made her Carnegie Hall debut in 2013, singing Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins with the Detroit Symphony as part of the Spring for Music Festival. The NY Times called her “sensational,” and the classical music world instantly had a new star.

In 2007, Storm starred in Portland Center Stage’s production of Cabaret with Wade McCollum. The show was a smash hit, earning Large glowing reviews. Her next endeavor, the musical memoir Crazy Enough, played to packed houses in

2009 during its unprecedented 21-week sold out run in Portland. Storm went on to perform a cabaret version of the show to critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Adelaide Festival in Australia, and Joe’s Pub in New York. Her memoir, Crazy Enough, was released by Simon and Schuster in 2012, named Oprah’s Book of the Week, and awarded the 2013 Oregon Book Award for Creative Nonfiction.

Storm is featured in Rid of Me, a film by Portlander James Westby, starring Katie O’Grady and Theresa Russell. In 2010, she starred at the Mark Taper Forum with Katey Sagal and Michael McKean in Jerry Zak’s production of Harps and Angels, a musical featuring the work of Randy Newman. In the fall of 2014, Storm & Le Bonheur released a record designed to capture their sublime and subversive interpretations of the American Songbook. Entitled simply Le Bonheur and released on Pink Martini’s Heinz Records, the recording is a collection of tortured and titillating love songs: beautiful, familiar, yet twisted … much like the lady herself.

Jesus graduated in Teaching with a specialty in Musical Education at the University of Cádiz. He won the Premio Flamenco Hoy 2014 for Best Guitar Accompaniment. He has been the musical composer of numerous dance shows for artists like Merche Esmeralda “Last Stop”, Molina choro “Notice, Bayles Gypsy,” David Coria “Spiral, ” Ana Morales “ReciclArte” and “De-Heeled Sandal,” Eduardo Guerrero “Alley of Sins,” Andrés Peña “A Fuego Lento,” “Órdago To The Big,” and “The Air That Brings Me,” and Joaquín Grilo “Belmonte.”

Jocelyn Gould is a Canadian jazz guitarist. Passionate about the tradition of jazz guitar, she cites Grant Green, Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery and Joe Pass as primary influences of the instrument. Originally from Winnipeg, Canada, Jocelyn holds a Bachelor of Jazz Studies from University of Manitoba and a Master of Music in Jazz Studies from Michigan State University.

Originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Jocelyn’s passion for music began very young. Both of Jocelyn’s parents played guitar throughout her youth, and Jocelyn learned piano and voice at a young age with her father, who was an elementary school music teacher. After completing high school, Jocelyn initially studied science before switching into to the faculty of music at University of Manitoba to pursue a jazz studies degree on guitar. During her time at the University of Manitoba studied with guitarist Larry Roy, drummer Quincy Davis and saxophonist Jon Gordon.

ARTISTS’ PROFILE

Empire Wild is a genre-bending, crossover trio featuring Ken Kubota, Holly Bean, and Mitch Lyon. Ken and Mitch bring all the cello has to offer—bowed, plucked, chopped and more. Holly can be found singing and pushing the piano into any style the group sets their mind on.

The three musicians channel their love for musical exploration into the trio—fusing the sounds of pop, folk, jazz and more into their songwriting and composition. Their debut EP ‘Paper Seasons’ features all original songs, highlighting the trio’s unique sound and instrumentation. Based in NYC, Empire Wild was selected as an Ambassador Prize winner in the 2020 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition.

Last season the trio delighted audiences with their signature mix of original songwriting and unique arrangements at venues across the country including a

stop at South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center, a concert on the Harriman-Jewell concert series in Kansas City and a day at the Kaufman Music Center’s Musical Storefronts in Lincoln Center. This fall will feature a Midwest tour through ten states along with educational workshops in Iowa and Ohio.

Individually, all three musicians are committed to community engagement and teaching. Together as an ensemble, Empire Wild feels that it is important to prioritize community-oriented work and bring creative musical outlets and opportunities to students of all backgrounds and skill levels. The Queen’s Cartoonists

The Queen’s Cartoonists

A MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Hello, I’m Dr. Joel Pierson, Artistic Director and pianist for The Queen’s Cartoonists. Can you imagine going to a concert with your parents, grandparents, kids, or grandkids and everyone having an equal amount of FUN? Every time we get on stage, this is our goal. Many of us got our first exposure to classical music from cartoons, but we rarely think about how amazing the music in those films is. So here we are. Without giving too much away (we love surprises), prepare yourself to hear a mixture of classical and jazz music set to a backdrop of famous cartoon characters. Think Cab Calloway & Betty Boop. Rossini & Bugs Bunny. Buddy Rich & Popeye the Sailor Man. You get the picture.

*Note: we can only guarantee that the first three rows will NOT get wet. Again, the only non-wet guarantee is the first three rows. Thank you.

The Queen’s Cartoonists perform music from cartoons! Pulling from over 100 years of animation,TQC’s performances are perfectly synchronized to the films projected onstage. The band matches the energy of the cartoons, leading the audience through a world of virtuosic musicianship, multi-instrumental mayhem, and comedy.

Projections of animated films dazzle the audience, while the band re-creates original soundtracks note-for-note, or writes their own fresh compositions to modern pieces, all the while breathing new life into two uniquely American forms of art: jazz and animation. Tying everything together is the TQC brand of comedyanecdotes about the cartoons and their composers, stream-of-consciousness humor, and elements of a musical circus.

Watch your favorite classic cartoon characters interact with the musicians on stage, and expect the unexpected

from the Golden Age of Animation, cult cartoon classics, and modern animated films. Inspired by the cross-roads of jazz, classical music, and cartoons, TQC features Jazz Age composers like Carl Stalling, Raymond Scott, and John Kirby, alongside classical giants Mozart, Rossini, and Strauss (to name just a few).

The six members of The Queen’s Cartoonists, all now residing in Queens, New York, originally hail from four continents. The band has brought their unique concert experience to performing arts centers, clubs, and festivals across the United States and Europe. TQC is equally at home performing in New York City subway stations, opening for the New York Philharmonic, or selling out shows at the Blue Note Jazz Club. They have been featured in over fifty publications, including The Wall Street Journal, The Chicago Tribune, The L.A. Times, The Houston Chronicle, NPR, and Mashable.

ARTISTS’ PROFILES

Joel Pierson is a composer and jazz pianist whose work straddles the worlds of jazz, pop, and contemporary classical music. He frequently uses humor as a means to engage audiences with new music He has worked with artists of great repute (the New York Philharmonic, the Kronos Quartet), and artists of even greater ill-repute (Linkin Park, Ke$ha). Wayne Newton told Joel he loved him, and Paul McCartney gave him a shoulder massage. He has performed on all seven continents (yes, even Antarctica), and as a songwriter was signed to Warner Brothers Records. His music has been performed by major symphony orchestras including Atlanta, Houston, Toronto, Cleveland, & The Philly Pops. Joel is the author of numerous music education books, including You Suck at Piano, 20 Piano Pieces for People with Emotional Problems, and The Nutsmacker. See and hear more on his website: www.joelpierson.com

The descendent of a sheep-thief and a woman who baked her enemies in to pies, Mark Phillips is the luckiest jazz immigrant in history. Upon deciding to move Up Over (what Australians call the US) to pursue great music and fewer deadlier creatures, Mark was told that in fact he had been born in the US, and already was, therefore, a US citizen. The hard part being magically taken care of, Mark landed in Queens in 2011. His strange musical journey started by studying classical saxophone, but has since morphed into being the best damn cartoon clarinetist

to ever come from New South Wales. His instrumental accomplishments have not gone un- noticed, as he is now a Selmer Artist, ranking him among the best woodwind players in New York City. His bartending skills, while occasionally paying the rent, have proven to be less distinguished, as Australians have a natural tendency to overpour and under-care about their patrons.

New York City based multi-multi-multiinstrumentalist Drew Pitcher was raised in Michigan, close to Michilimackinac, which, by complete coincidence, is also his DJ name. After pounding the pavement with dope beats building his street cred, Drew dropped his true musical skill: being a world-class player of the tenor sax, alto sax, clarinet, bass clarinet, flute, and harmonica. Drew attended the University of North Texas where he performed and recorded with the Grammy nominated One O’Clock Lab Band, but dark economic times followed… Drew made ends meet by recording smooth jazz Christmas albums under the moniker “Montgomery Bruce”, traveling the world seeking gigs on cruise ships, and performing with artists such as The Drifters, The Coasters, The Platters, The Tea Cups, and sadly, Wayne Newton. Having survived these travels, Drew now resides in New York, where he ferments malted barley and hops in his apartment.

Rossen “Chock Full” Nedelchev Drums

Rossen Nedelchev is a professional drummer, producer and educator in New York City. He hails from Sofia, Bulgaria, and let me tell you, that’s a helluva cab fare. His jack-of-all-trades mentality extends to musical styles as well, being an in-demand session drummer in the worlds of pop, jazz, funk, jazz-funk, rhythm & blues, blues & rhythm, rhythm & rhythm, and bluesy jazz. Rossen is the band leader for the rhythm & rhythm band Alter View and runs The Jazz

Playground, a jazz outreach program for stressed-out New York City children. He also plays drums in the NYC pop/electronic band The Qualia. He produces for a variety of artists and has a Graduate Diploma in jazz performance from the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. Rossen dabbles in photography, long-distance running, and child-raising (ok that last one is more than a dabble).

Malik “M” McLaurine Bass

Malik “M” McLaurine makes the most of his modem and mojo, mashing a meticulously modern mask with his makeshift manifestation on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (season 3, episodes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10). Just not episode 7. Don’t watch episode 7 - Malik’s not in it, so why would you specifically put on THAT episode? What’s wrong with you? Malik’s a great bass player: he’s from Queens, he lives in Queens, he oozes Queens. He embodies Queens. Malik left New York City for college, but then came straight back to Queens. And here he will stay. Malik comes from a long line of bassists, and plans on passing on the tradition to his pet cat, “Kitty-chan”.
