WELCOME Dear Friends, I want to extend a warm welcome to each of you attending this performance. Thank you for coming! I am honored to serve as Executive Director of Ogden Symphony Ballet Association and wish to express my gratitude for your support as I have become acclimated to this new role. As a life-long musician, administrator, and advocate for the arts I am inspired and motivated by the dedication and commitment I have seen from so many donors, patrons, and volunteers. I am extremely enthusiastic about what we can accomplish together. Looking ahead, I am excited about the increase in energy surrounding the blossoming arts scene in Ogden, and the strong consortium of cultural leaders we have around us. I believe that OSBA’s value lies in the ability to connect our community through music and dance; and to bring the countless positive benefits of the performing arts to as many in our community as possible. If you haven’t already, I invite you to join our efforts by sharing your passion with others; bring a friend, persuade a coworker to attend, introduce us to someone new in town. I cannot overestimate the impact of these activities. There are many other ways to make a difference, and I encourage you to contact a staff member if you would like to share your time, talents, or resources. I am eager to get to know each of you, and learn about the facets of OSBA that you enjoy, and where we have room for improvement. I am always open to your feedback—positive or negative. We can only succeed by working together to protect and grow our cherished organization. Melissa Klein, Executive Director

WELCOME
Under the direction of numerous dedicated Board Members and long-serving Executive Directors like Jean Pell (27 years) and Sharon Macfarlane (14 years), OSBA has expanded its programming but remains committed to its mission to enrich the lives of people in northern Utah by sponsoring world-class classical music and dance programming in the Greater Ogden Area. Since its inception, OSBA has presented over 800 performances. In 1949, Beverly Lund and Ginny Mathei decided they wanted to add even more culture to Weber County, so, with the help of a few friends and their husbands’ checkbooks, they brought the Utah Symphony to Ogden for a single performance. The total cost was $400, and three hundred people attended the concert. This 1949 concert was a big success, so the women decided to present even more concerts in Ogden. They organized a committee within the Welfare League (later the Junior League) to raise funds for the Symphony Concerts. Then, in 1957, this committee reformed and incorporated as the Ogden Guild. After a few more name changes and the addition of Ballet West performances in 1982, the organization became the Ogden Symphony Ballet Association.
801.399.9214
In addition, OSBA actively works to engage and educate younger patrons. For example, our Youth Guild has provided generations of high school students with opportunities to serve. We also offer a variety of education classes, from Masterworks Music Detectives to Music and Dance Explorers. And we are partnering with several local community organizations to expand these programs to reach even more children and students. This May, we will present our 3rd Annual Youth Benefit Concert, featuring Young Concert Artist, violinist Bella Hristova. The proceeds from this concert will go to fund music education scholarships for local children. If you would like to know more about any of these programs, please do not hesitate to call our office!

SEASONS Long ago, in a land across the great waters, our ancient father had a dream. In his dream the Great Spirit came to our father and carried him away on wings of fire. The spirit told our father he would lead him to a new land— A place of bounty, a promised land— For father had walked in truth and in light in all seasons. So begins the legend. It is the story of the seasons of a people: Seasons of faith and prosperity, pride and war, forgiveness and rebirth; Seasons known to all people, in all nations, from the beginning of time. We invite you to journey with us through this timeless legend. It is our story. It is your story. — Janielle Christensen — Artistic Director

PROGRAM SEASON OF PROMISE
SEASON OF PROSPERITY
North America: Eagle The eagle, which flies highest and nearest to our Creator, is sacred to natives of North America. Embodying strength, courage, and wisdom, the eagle shows us that we have the ability to develop the same qualities.
Tahiti: Hinakura Tahitian legends tell of the great creator Tane, God of Harmony and Beauty. It is believed that the pearls of Tahiti were his inspiration to create the stars. Under the light of those stars, man and woman come together during this ‘ori Tahiti, sharing dreams of an eternal bond.
Bolivia: Tinku This dance comes from the small region of Potosí and represents a festive offering in hopes of a good harvest. Hawai’i: Noho Ana Ke ‘Ala Anuhea This dance contrasts the violent, volcanic elements of creation with the beauty and life that eventually emerge. Alaska: Yupik Using their hands, the dancers tell stories of fishing exploits and of building friendships.
SEASON OF PLENTY Brazil: Carimbó This traditional dance depicts the life of the fishermen and the deep connection the people have to the sea. Samoa: Sasa, Lapa Lapa, Fa’ataupati Young Samoans demonstrate their love for life in the rousing “Sasa” and “Lapa Lapa” and prove their agility in the powerful slap dance. Paraguay: Carreta Guy The enchanting music of the Paraguayan harp enhances the elegance of this enthralling dance, performed in dresses made of beautiful Ñandutí lace. North America: Bow and Arrow This dance reverences the bow and arrow for providing sustenance and protection and also honors past warriors.

Argentina: Chacarera The energetic chacarera emphasizes the grace and beauty of the paisana (Argentina’s cowgirl) and the strength and masculinity of the gaucho (Argentina’s cowboy). North America: Fancy The women’s fancy dance shows the emergence of the butterfly and the beginning of a new direction in life. The men’s fancy dance depicts the warriors’ battlefield feats. Bolivia: Caporales In this display of skill and power, the caporal uses his elaborate costume to represent his strength, pride, and wealth.
SEASON OF WAR North America: Warrior’s Suite These dances pay respect to all Native American warriors. New Zealand: Te Wa o Tumatauenga, He Korero Riri Carried on the wind of dawn come the voices of war and of supplication to Tumatauenga, God of War, by both warrior and loved one. CREDITS LIVING LEGENDS BYU Living Legends captures the essence of ancient and modern cultures in a celebration of Latin American, Native American, and Polynesian song and dance. Traditions come to life as talented descendants of these cultures blend authentic choreography, intricate costumes, and heart-pounding music into one captivating show. Living Legends performed in Germany and Switzerland in 2018. In 2016 the group toured New Zealand, Tonga, and Samoa, where they had the opportunity to experience Polynesian culture—the heritage of many students in the group. Living Legends is produced by the Department of Dance in the College of Fine Arts and Communications at Brigham Young University.
BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY Intensive learning in a stimulating setting— nurturing the mind, body, and spirit—is central to the mission of Brigham Young University. Cradled between the Rocky Mountains and Utah Lake, BYU was founded in 1875 by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The approximately 33,000 full-time students who attend BYU come from all 50 states and more than 100 countries, with about 65 percent coming from outside of Utah. All major religions are represented on campus. BYU’s faculty numbers around 1,600. The university offers about 180 bachelor’s degrees, more than 60 master’s degrees, and some 25 doctoral degrees, including a juris doctor.
