THE STORY

BRINGING THE ARTS HOME

THE

NUTCRACKER STORY

Artists of Ballet West in the Act I Battle Scene of “The Nutcracker”. Photo by Luke Isley.

The Nutcracker begins at the Stahlbaum home on Christmas Eve. Mr. and Mrs. Stahlbaum and their children Clara and Fritz are busy preparing for the evening festivities. The guests arrive, including Clara’s Godfather, Herr Drosselmeyer. Herr Drosselmeyer has fashioned a special gift for Clara, a Nutcracker designed in the form of a small soldier. Clara falls in love with her Nutcracker at once. That night, Clara is unable to sleep without one more look at her beloved Nutcracker. She tiptoes back into the living room and cradles it once more before falling asleep. She is not sure if she is dreaming or not, but before her eyes are huge mice playing in front of the Christmas tree that has grown to a tremendous size. The Nutcracker fights with the Mouse King and, in the heat of the battle, Clara takes off her slipper and throws it at the Mouse King. While he is distracted, the Nutcracker stabs him with his saber.

801.399.9214 | symphonyballet.org

After the battle, the Nutcracker is magically transformed into a handsome prince and, grateful to Clara for saving his life, invites her to accompany him on a journey to the fabled Kingdom of the Sugar Plum Fairy. En route, they pass through the exquisite land of the Snow Queen and her Prince. Act II begins in the land of the Sugar Plum Fairy, where Clara is entertained by an array of divertissements, including Spanish, Arabian and Chinese dancers, as well as Mother Buffoon, with her many children who appear from under her gigantic skirt. The evening concludes with the grand pas de deux performed by the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. Following the pas de deux, Clara is whisked away with her prince in a flying sled, while waving goodbye to the Sugar Plum Fairy and her magical kingdom.

LEADERSHIP

BRINGING THE ARTS HOME

As Artistic Director of Ballet West, Adam Sklute has expanded the company’s repertoire and visibility with exciting company premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure and greater focus on Ballet West Academy.

Adam Sklute Ballet West Artistic Director

Under Sklute’s leadership BW has toured extensively, appearing three times at Washington DC’s Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (2008 Ballet Across America–Serenade, and two week-long runs of The Nutcracker in 2012 and 2014); a 2013 engagement at Chicago’s famed Auditorium Theater with his The Sleeping Beauty and a mixed repertory program; twice at New York City Center’s Fall for Dance Festival (Les Biches, 2009; Grand Pas Paquita, 2012); and twice at the Chicago Dancing Festival (Serenade 2010; Sinfonietta 2011). In the past five years, the company has also appeared at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in 2011; The Laguna Dance Festival in 2010; Las Vegas with Nevada Ballet Theater in both 2010 (Sinfonietta) and 2012 (Jewels in collaboration with NBT and PNB); and Aspen, CO., New York, NY, Victoria, BC and Dallas, TX all during the 2014/15 season. In 2009, BW graced the cover of Dance Magazine for the first time in 25 years and again was on the cover in 2013. Since 2007, the company has garnered numerous reviews and articles in such publications as The New York Times, The Washington Post, Dance Magazine, Ballet Review, and Pointe to name a few. In 2012 and 2013 Ballet West was the subject of the BBC Worldwide Production’s docu-drama television series Breaking Pointe which aired on The CW channel. Sklute has introduced BW to renowned, contemporary choreographers such as Nicolo Fonte, Jiri Kylián, Mark Morris, and Twyla Tharp, among others, while expanding the company’s Balanchine repertoire and adding early 20th century Diaghilev-era masterpieces. In addition to reintroducing lost elements of Christensen’s production of The Nutcracker and reconstructing his The Firebird, Sklute conceived and produced new versions of Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and Giselle. He developed BW’s wildly successful annual Family Series and Innovations programs . A native of Berkeley, California, Sklute began dancing at the age of 16. His early training was at the Oakland Ballet and San Francisco Ballet schools. After only two years of formal study he joined The Joffrey II Dancers (The Joffrey’s apprentice company). Two years later he was asked to join The Joffrey Ballet. Sklute was one of the last two artists personally chosen by Robert Joffrey. He danced with The Joffrey from 1985 to 2000 and then rose through the ranks to Associate Director in 2005. Sklute became Artistic Director of BW in 2007. He has extensive television and film credits and is an Adjunct Professor at The University of Utah and is an internationally sought after a teacher, lecturer, coach and judge for ballet worldwide.
