DIRECTOR’S NOTES

I

by Julie Kramer

rish folklore is filled with tales of love and loss and magic that transforms people into animals and back again. It’s a culture of storytelling and of finding a way to laugh in the face of despair. I don’t have an Irish bone in my body, but I grew up in the Irish Catholic town of Scranton, PA, and it’s a culture I feel at home around. From the moment I read Outside Mullingar it spoke to my gravest superstitions and greatest hopes–that the loss of a loved one is too much to bear but, also, that it’s never too late to live your dreams. John Patrick Shanley spent most of his career not writing about his Irishness. Then he went with his father to Ireland, to the farm where his father was born. About 20 years later he sat down to write, and created what seems to me to be a new kind of fable–one about our lives now. The play begins in 2008 and ends in 2013. It’s a story about who we are in the face of a rapidly changing world of scientific and technological advances and a volatile economy. But it’s also a tale of old feuds and closely protected secrets, of the deeply felt belief that there’s magic around us if we are open to experiencing it, that we are the sum of our history and the people who have loved us, that by facing our most closely held fears we become our truest selves. It has brought me moments of uncontrolled tears and of side-splitting laughter. The story has lodged itself in my soul like a long-remembered fairy tale. I hope it does the same for you, and that it gives you faith, and brings you joy.

A map of the two farms and the two gates which are discussed in the play.

THE IMPORTANCE OF LAND IN OUTSIDE MULLINGAR By Sydney Cheek O’Donnell “There’s the green fields, and the animals living off them. And over that there’s us, living off the animals. And over that there’s that which tends to us and lives off us. Whatever that is, it holds me here.” – Anthony Reilly, Outside Mullingar, scene 2

A

nthony Reilly’s fields lie at the beating heart of Outside Mullingar. Family history, personal identity, and legacy are shaped by the relationship of these characters to the land on which they live, work, love, and die. This should not be surprising even for a play set in contemporary Ireland, whose national history is characterized by the arbitrary confiscation of land as one means of erasing Irish national identity. It was only in the mid-nineteenth century that Irish nationalism began to take hold, resulting in Land Acts which allowed Irish Catholics to own and inherit land once again. When Tony says that his farm has been in his family for 100 years, this is not an idle boast; it is a very important point of family honor for him, and he feels a great responsibility to pass on the farm to his heirs in exactly the same form that his father passed it on to him. Outside Mullingar takes place from 2008 to 2013, a decade after Ireland had entered the European Union and the so-called “Celtic Tiger” began to roar as household income rose. Higher incomes enabled many middle class Irish to purchase homes for the first time, but the overavailability of credit and the fraught history of landownership in Ireland generated a real estate frenzy characterized by excessive building and borrowing. At the same time, many young people who had been raised on family farms left agriculture for the more lucrative and now booming construction sector. Then, in 2008, amid the global financial crisis, credit contracted and the real estate and construction sectors collapsed. (Sound familiar?) Despite this crash, a bright spot emerged in Irish agriculture. With food and drink exports on the rise, investment in agriculture increased and the agricultural workforce actually grew to about 12.5% of the total working population of Ireland. It is against this backdrop that Anthony’s father Tony is weighing who he should leave his farm to when he dies. But this is only the backdrop to a play that has far more personal concerns. Outside Mullingar is the story of two people who have grown up side-by-side on adjoining farms, and never realized the exact nature of the ties that bind them to each other.

OUTSIDE MULLINGAR

The Painful Truth Pain is an unbidden guest, humanity’s shadow companion down through the ages. It is a despoiler of dreams and a thief. Chronic pain can appear suddenly in a person’s life, changing it forever. Dr. Lynn R. Webster puts a face on chronic pain through the lives of his patients, and provides an intimate view of what it is like to live with it. The Painful Truth will open your eyes to the world of those who are stigmatized and marginalized by our society and healthcare system. Yet the new book offers hope and a path forward for those willing to engage in a crusade against the human race’s primal enemy—pain. “This book gives voice to real people who suffer with chronic pain and to their caregivers. With the wisdom and compassion of a seasoned practitioner, he tells their stories....We would all do well to heed the call of those forced to live with chronic pain. This excellent book is a very good place to start.” —The Rev. George Anthony Hoeltzel, Episcopal priest, Yonkers, New York
