The Haskell Free Library & Opera House, where the action of A Distinct Society occurs, is a real place—a historic building that sits atop the Canada/U . S . border, a line of tape running through its rooms indicating the divide . The events of the play, though highly fictionalized, are inspired by what was happening at the library in 2017, when families separated by the so-called “Muslim ban” were using the space to connect with each other .

In writing this play, I’m inviting audiences into my backyard . Like the character of Declan, I hail from the city of Sherbrooke, about a thirty-minute drive from the library in a beautiful corner of Quebec called the Eastern Townships Like many people, I romanticize my childhood . Everything was so idyllic and peaceful! But was it really?

When the referendum for Quebec separation was called in 1995, my idea about what it meant to be a Canadian (and the child of Middle Eastern immigrants to Quebec) started to shift . When corruption and divisiveness begin to creep into a political system, how do everyday people remain uncorrupted and united? It’s this question, one I grappled with first as a young person in Quebec and then again as an adult in America, that centers this play .

A Distinct Society is about five people who are craving connection in a world determined to keep them apart . In this one room that exists in two countries (or perhaps neither country?), can their humanity win out over the system? Welcome to the Haskell Free Library . .

Kareem Fahmy, January 2022

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

This World Premiere has been years in the making and I am thrilled that it is finally here!

From my first reading of Kareem Fahmy’s A Distinct Society, back in 2019, I was intrigued by how vividly the story humanized the way political policy affects people

The moment we read the play, TheatreWorks Silicon Valley (where I’m the Director of New Works) committed to including the show in our August 2020 New Works Festival . And then . . well . . 2020

Through all the delays wrought by COVID, Kareem and I kept working on the story, doing many Zoom readings . Even in that strange medium, it was apparent how deeply this play resonated with audiences .

Perhaps that’s because A Distinct Society is a play populated by ordinary people—good, complicated people in whom we see ourselves reflected—who are forced to deal with extraordinary circumstances . This is a play born of this moment—a moment when a line can divide a family, a country, and people from their best selves .

Good stories reveal our common humanity and connect us to one another This one connected TheatreWorks with Karen Azenberg and Pioneer Theatre Company . It’s been a wonderful, fruitful collaboration and we’re looking forward to sharing this beautiful story with all of you . Thank you for being here It’s story time in the Haskell Free Library . Enjoy!

Musical

Words & Music by Stephen Sondheim and Julia McKenzie Directed by Gerry McIntyre

Putting It Together is a musical revue showcasing the songs of Stephen Sondheim (Sweeney Todd, Company, Follies, A Funny Thing Happened...). Drawing its title from a song in Sunday in the Park with George, it celebrates Sondheim’s incomparable career in musical theatre. Featuring nearly thirty Sondheim tunes, Putting It Together is a tour de force by only five performers and is a perfect tribute to one of the greatest composer/lyricists of the American musical theatre.

COMING NEXT
A musical tribute to Stephen Sondheim, the greatest composer and lyricist of the 20th century.
