“Okay . Debaters, you have ninety seconds to prepare Starting now . ”
When playwright Heidi Schreck speaks about the origins of What the Constitution Means to Me, she shares her love of speech and debate; her reverence for the U . S Constitution, mostly taught to her by her parents; and recreating the ritual of the American Legion Oratorical Contest that she competed in as a teenager . The contest, created by the American’s veterans’ organization to encourage high school students to develop a knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution, was formative for her The play, which began as a ten-minute performance piece, is Heidi Schreck’s own crucible of extemporaneous and prepared oration, big questions and parliamentary debate . In interviews, Shreck speaks to the great benefit of the fundamental principles of debate: questioning every assumption and not taking anything for granted . When the side a debater represents on a topic may be decided by a coin toss, debate invites an interconnected exchange of ideas . Each debater is asked to find a point of connection with their position and to back it up with facts as they build, rebut, refute and cross-examine one another’s arguments Heidi Schreck offers that that structured ‘clash’ also allows us to hold space, listen, and imagine other possibilities . So, break out your index cards, writing instruments and pocket Constitutions .
“Will the Proposition please approach? Your time begins now”
