19th century Russia. The Company introduces themselves and Natasha’s beloved, Prince Andrey, who is away somewhere fighting in the Napoleonic Wars. (Prologue) We also meet Pierre, cuckolded aristocrat in sudden existential free-fall, seeking solace in food, drink and philosophy. (Pierre)

Marya D. welcomes her goddaughter Natasha and her cousin Sonya to her home in Moscow to wait out their fiances’ absences fighting in the war. Marya D. urges Natasha to visit Andrey’s sister Princess Mary and aging father Prince Bolkonsky, to gain her future in-law’s approval for the advantageous match. (Moscow) Old Prince Bolkonsky torments his daughter as his mental health deteriorates. (The Private and Intimate Life of the House) When Natasha visits Andrey’s father and sister, she is met with disdain and dislike. (Natasha & Bolkonskys) Stunned and hurt by the rejection, Natasha reminisces about the first time she and Andrey met and yearns for his return. (No One Else)

Marya D. escorts Natasha and Sonya to the Opera, where they meet Pierre’s wife Hélène, the queen of Moscow society. When Hélène’s brother Anatole arrives, he is immediately taken with Natasha. (The Opera) Anatole’s amorous attentions overwhelm Natasha, causing her to doubt her love for Andrey. (Natasha & Anatole) Leaving the opera, Anatole returns to Pierre and Hélène’s home to ask Pierre for money and invites him to the club where Pierre imbibes heavily. Anatole boasts to Dolokhov that he will soon make love to Natasha, and his friend reminds him that he’s already married, they toast to their conquests of married women. Pierre recklessly challenges the famed assassin Dolokhov to a duel. Despite his incompetence as a duellist, Pierre wounds Dolokhov. After the duel, Anatole urges his sister to invite Natasha to the ball. (The Duel) Pierre, mortified by his own squandered life, begs God and the heavens to wake him up before it’s too late. (Dust & Ashes) Sunday morning, Natasha receives an unexpected visit from Anatole’s sister, Hélène, who persuades her to join them at the ball that night. (Charming) At the ball, Anatole seduces Natasha, convincing her of their love. (The Ball)

Pierre writes to Andrey, recounting the goings-on in Moscow. Natasha attempts to write to Andrey to break off their engagement as she and Anatole make plans to elope. (Letters) Upon discovering that Sonya has read Anatole’s letter, Natasha confesses her love for him. Sonya quizzes Natasha about her refusal of Andrey and Anatole’s covert courtship, and threatens to reveal their plans. Natasha writes to Princess Mary to announce her refusal of Andrey’s hand. (Sonya & Natasha) Sonya vows to do everything in her power to protect her cousin. (Sonya Alone) As Dolokhov and Anatole review their plan for Natasha’s abduction and sham marriage, Dolokhov urges his friend to reconsider. Balaga, the famous troika driver, arrives for his part in the evening’s stratagem. (Preparations and Balaga) When Anatole and Dolokhov arrive at Marya D.’s house for Anatole’s secret rendezvous with Natasha, Anatole is confronted by her godmother, who has discovered their plot from Sonya. (The Abduction) Marya D. lambasts Natasha for her part in the intended elopement. (In My House) Fearing the family’s ruin, Marya D. confides Natasha’s attempted elopement to Pierre, who reveals that Anatole is already married. (A Call to Pierre) As Pierre hunts for Anatole, Mary D. reveals Anatole’s duplicity to Natasha. (Find Anatole) Pierre confronts Anatole and demands that he return Natasha’s letters, leave Moscow and to never speak of what has happened. Natasha poisons herself with arsenic. (Pierre & Anatole)

Prince Andrey returns and presses Pierre to confirm whether the rumors he has heard about Natasha and Anatole are true. Despite Pierre’s appeal for his compassion, Andrey refuses to forgive Natasha. (Pierre and Andrey) When Pierre visits Natasha, she implores him to ask Andrey to forgive her. Natasha seeks to amend the wrongs she feels she has done, and her grief and remorse overcome Pierre. (Pierre & Natasha) His heart suddenly open, Pierre steps out into the night to discover the Great Comet of 1812 shining above him, an unexpected portent of new life. (The Great Comet of 1812)

7 Synopsis

Director’s Note

As we conclude our 2023-2024 Season journey, I am trying to learn to savor the moment—and we have certainly had some delicious things to savor around here lately. Of course, the recent opening of the new Meldrum Theatre comes to mind, but I also hope that as you walk into the theatre for this show, there is a feast for the eyes and ears ahead of you. I hope that you can pause, breathe it in, and enjoy a slightly different look to Simmons PMT this time around. Drink in the richness of Jo Winiarski’s scenic design (meticulously crafted by our indefatigable team of skilled artisans) and allow the incredible performances by the amazing company we have assembled for Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 melt in your mouth. Feel the kinetic energy that surrounds you…it’s a feeling you’ll only get from live theatre.

Because theatre is a living, breathing experience that relies just as much on the audience as it does on the productions and talent on display—and frankly, because theatre makes life more bearable, we are celebrating our upcoming 2024-2025 Season with the theme “Theatre Lives Here.” I love this tagline because now, more than ever, it’s vital for us to savor the moments in which we gather and share live cultural experiences. Even in a city with a robust arts and culture scene like Salt Lake City’s, many of your favorite cultural institutions are facing unprecedented challenges in a post-pandemic, streaming-dominant culture. PTC is no different. So, please make sure to check out our line-up for next season (in your playbill, on the signage in the lobby) and then plan your return to PTC by subscribing to another season of delicious moments to savor.

Thank you for being here. Enjoy!

Karen Azenberg
