Director’s Note “All gardeners know better than other gardeners.” Chinese proverb In her seminal work In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens, Alice Walker “… believes that the truth of any subject only comes when all sides of the story are put together”. With her insightfully cultivated play, Karen Zacarías sews an analogy that roots a resolution to a seemingly simple neighbors conflict that blossoms out of control. Like the precarious fence that divides their yards, which serves as the literal center of the Butley’s & DelValle’s rift, the heat of their microcosmic tussle at times resonates with the macro cultural conundrums currently facing society today. Zacarías, with her deftly constructed plot points and laser-like commentary on American societal norms, allows the audience to be in conversation with the onstage action – in real time - as authentically compelling points are made and dashed with whiplike agility. As with the duality of a rose in full bloom, that releases the most delightful of fragrances while delivering its beauty by way of a thorny path, there’s no meaningfully concise way of contextualizing the journey of this play – so instead I’ll offer up the following quotes to serve as varying pathways upon which to enter our Garden. Her is an established stage and television award-winning plays include The Copper Children, actor best known for his five seasons Destiny of Desire, Native Gardens, The Book Club Play, on HBO’s The Wire. We have a hearing assistance system that allows our hardof-hearing patrons to sit in any seat in the house. Collateral required; inquire at coat check. We welcome all persons. containers are allowed in the theatre. University of Utah is a non-smoking campus, both inside and outside all buildings. Evening performances are at 7:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday; Saturday matinees at 2:00 p.m. Please avoid arriving after curtain time. To avoid disturbing other patrons, latecomers will be seated at the discretion of the House Manager. This policy has been instituted at the request of many of our patrons. Season ticket holders may exchange their tickets for another performance of the same play by notifying the box office at least 48 hours prior to the performance date. Tickets are non-refundable. You may donate your tickets, helping yourself and Pioneer Theatre Company. If you are unable to attend a production, make a tax-deductible gift of your tickets to the Theatre so that we may re-sell them. Call the box office at least 48 hours prior to the performance date. The Patron Services staff will serve you from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. During the run of a show, the box office is open extended hours Monday through Saturday.
