PLAYWRIGHT’S NOTE

Souvenir began, as plays do, with a “what if.” What if there was a singer, and let’s say she imagined herself to be a great coloratura soprano but in reality she was…not? And what if she had an accompanist who was new to her unique approach but he needed a job? And what if…

These questions led to a play with a surprising amount of singing in it, of music from the opera, but also from classic American songs we know as standards. Growing up, that’s what I heard. My father was a jazz musician; I didn’t listen to rock and roll. Instead, I listened to Sinatra sing Violets for Your Furs, my favorite portrait of the big-city glamor of a remembered New York. There was a script. With songs. And we arranged a reading. Since there was music, the reading took careful preparation. I’d been stuck at the Goodspeed Opera House—I was still a working actor—and couldn’t be around too much during rehearsal. So, the actual performance took me by surprise. As it did the audience, who responded with what I can only describe as enthusiasm. Next day, we did a second performance—all we were allowed by the union—and the reaction from the jammed theater was even stronger. So, the play went from being sort-of-a-thing to a real thing. The only snag was that we needed money to finance a full production.

Which was about when I came to Pioneer Theatre Company, glad to be away from New York, to act in a production of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. I was comfortable and able to put my production anxieties on hold—will it happen, won’t it happen?—to turn my attention to Victorian London. Meanwhile, I would look at my own script, reworking some scenes, rethinking some songs… Speaking of songs, I loved the University bookshop and spent a good deal of time there. They had a sale and I bought, mostly on whim, a book that contained the lyrics to the best of the American Songbook songs, the very songs that were in my head for Cosmé to sing.

So here I was, on the one hand dealing with the foggy horrors of London while waiting to hear if my own play—it was titled Musicale, then—would have a life. At a lunch for the PTC Guild, supporters of the theatre, I told them how the work done at Pioneer, and at other theaters, keeps us going, gives us hope and opportunity. I’m not sure they altogether believed me that their actions could prove so vital. Meanwhile in New York, as I was speaking, managers and producers were meeting to work out a budget. Good news is they succeeded. So the play I worked on while I was at Pioneer would have a life and now it’s returned in its finished form.

I hope some of the Guild members get to see it. Maybe they’ll remember that lunch. I know I do.

THEATRE

MANAGING DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Dear Friends and Fellow Theatre Lovers, Since joining Pioneer Theatre Company (PTC) this August, I’ve enjoyed meeting many of you and learning about your connection to our Theatre’s legacy. Because of you—our partners, patrons, and volunteers—PTC remains a vibrant part of Salt Lake City’s artistic and social landscape. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart!

In a short time, we’ve launched “Curtain for All,” a paywhat-you-can ticket initiative, expanded University of Utah’s discounts, and introduced a “Date Night” package with a $100 gift certificate to Bambara and a night at PTC. We’re also working on more programs to make PTC accessible for families. —stay tuned for more on that!

I’m committed to ensuring PTC not only entertains but

enriches our community, making the Theatre a space for everyone. Recently, over 500 students and 385 seniors attended special matinees, and thanks to your support, we can continue offering these transformative experiences. Your meaningful and tangible contributions help sustain innovative, thought-provoking theatre and helps us sustain accessible programming for all. Consider donating, purchasing a season ticket, or sharing our mission with others. Together, we can keep PTC a vital cultural force in Salt Lake City for years to come.

Sincerely,
