The Rocky Horror Show - CONCERT VERSION Book, music, and lyrics by Richard O’Brien.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

I

t’s back-to-school time! As we start rehearsals here at Pioneer Theatre for our 2014-15 season, my children returned to school (West High–Go Panthers!), the U students returned and alarm clocks rang and lunch boxes were packed across the state. Other than our December production, which is usually chosen because it will appeal to a family audience, I don’t program our season thematically. I never thought about a “back-to-school” musical, and yet it did seem right to open this season with a show that, for better or worse, takes us all back to our grade school experience. My personal memories of spelling bees are not too terrific—I am a better person since the advent of spell-check!—and yet this winning musical by William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin makes me wish I had that one more chance to try to spell it right. …Ever wonder how you would do? And I offer special thanks to our rehearsal guest spellers, who freely gave of their time and insights to help craft a better production! On a different note, I want to take a moment to talk about how excited I am about not only this show, but our entire season. Our productions this year completely embrace the diverse preferences of our audience; there is something for everyone and several things I hope you will just go ahead and try. We have some new programming—the upcoming concert version of The Rocky Horror Show—as well as some truly unique and exciting offerings on our mainstage season, including the Utah premiere of our next show, One Man, Two Guvnors. The title may be unfamiliar to you, but prepare yourself for a tremendously funny and special theatrical experience that combines classic theatre, slapstick comedy, and live music! Please join us often; you won’t be disappointed. Karen Azenberg Artistic Director

THE FARM was founded in 2000 by Rebecca Feldman, Artistic Director. It is a collective of writers and performers, including Jay Reiss, Dan Fogler, and Sarah Saltzberg. The Farm’s interest is in the role of improvisation in creating new work for the theatre. The Farm initially designates a twoweek intensive period in which to discover, develop and rehearse a play from the impulses borne mainly out of the pressure of a deadline. Previous projects include Super (at Atlantic Theatre Studios), Why I Hate Florida (workshop at White Wave in DUMBO) and C-R-E-P-U-S-C-U-L-E (at the Present Company Theatorium in October 2002), on which The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is based. The character and original dialogue of “Beth Marguiles,” “Vice President Douglas Panch,” “Mr. Barfee,” and “Logan Schwarzengrubenierre” were created by Rebecca Feldman, Jay Reiss, Dan Fogler, and Sarah Saltzberg, respectively. RICH COLE (Casting) has happily served as PTC’s casting director since 2001. He has helped to populate more than 500 shows for Broadway, offBroadway, National Tours, London, Dublin, Vienna and over thirty-five of this nation’s major regional theatres. For this work, the Casting Society of America thrice nominated him for the prestigious Artios Award. Also a director and playwright, he is the founding Artistic Director of New York’s The Urban Rock Project, whose critically acclaimed production of Patriot Acts was one of the highlights of a recent New York International Fringe Festival. His play Unnatural Acts won the 2002 OOBR Award for Excellence. Rich made his Salt Lake City directing debut with The Caucasian Chalk Circle for the U of U’s Department of Theatre. ACTORS’ EQUITY ASSOCIATION (AEA) founded in 1913 represents more than 45,000 actors and stage managers in the United States. Equity seeks to advance, promote and foster the art of live theatre as an essential component of our society. Equity negotiates wages and working conditions, providing a wide range of benefits, including health and pension plans. AEA is a member of the AFL-CIO, and is affiliated with FIA, an international organization of performing arts unions. For more information, visit www.actorsequity.org.

Evening performances are at 7:30 p.m. Monday thru Thursday, 8:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday; Saturday matinees at 2:00 p.m. Please avoid arriving after curtain time. Season ticket holders may exchange their tickets for another performance of the same play. Return tickets to the box office at least 48 hours prior to the performance date. Tickets are non-refundable. You may donate your tickets, helping yourself and Pioneer Theatre Company. If you are unable to attend a production, make a tax-deductible gift of your tickets to the Theatre so that we may re-sell them. Call the box office 48 hours prior to the performance date. The Patron Services staff will serve you from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. During the run of a show, the box office is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. No children under age 5 admitted to performances.
