Welcome
Celebrate Family. Celebrate Life.
A
t the Utah Shakespeare Festival, 2019 is a year to celebrate the diversity of families in all their richness, including their strengths, weaknesses, joys, and sorrows. The family members in this year’s eight plays run the gamut from the screwball dysfunction of Jacob’s twelve sons in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat to the complex familial relationships in Hamlet. They illuminate the sometimes tender, sometimes brutal relationships between brothers in The Price and between spouses in Macbeth, as well as the exquisitely intricate parent-child relationship in Every Brilliant Thing. These characters, as well as those in The Book of Will, The Conclusion of Henry VI: Parts Two and Three, and Twelfth Night, reflect a bit of our own families, in all their variety. Through the laughter and tears, the arguments and reconciliations, the characters in these plays (just like us) are searching for love, acceptance, catharsis, and meaning in their families and their lives. We welcome you to this compelling human medley in all its distinction, varied colors, and irrepressible joys. Brian Vaughn, artistic director Frank Mack, executive producer Fred C. Adams, founder 5

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat
T
The Story of the Play
he musical opens with the Narrator. She shares the story of a young dreamer, a man named Joseph—the same Joseph whose story is told in the Book of Genesis. Joseph, as you may remember, was born into a family of twelve boys, all the sons of Jacob. Joseph is Jacob’s favorite son, and Jacob gives Joseph a splendid multi-colored coat. However, this coat, along with Joseph’s talk of dreams he has had showing he will be the ruler of his brothers, arouse the jealousy of the other eleven. At first, they decide to kill him, but instead they sell him as a slave to a group of Ishmaelites traveling to Egypt. So Joseph is taken off to Egypt, and his brothers return to tell their father that his favorite son is dead, producing his wonderful coat—which they have stained with the blood of a goat—as proof. Potiphar, a powerful man in Egypt, takes Joseph into his household as a slave. Joseph works hard, and Potiphar notices him. Unfortunately, he also catches the eye of his master’s wife, who tries to seduce him. When Potiphar catches them together, he assumes the worst (even though Joseph is innocent) and sends Joseph to prison.
While there, Joseph meets two of Pharaoh’s servants, both of whom have had strange dreams. Joseph interprets their dreams, correctly telling their future. In the meantime, Pharaoh has also been having unusual dreams. No one can interpret these dreams, so he is intrigued when he hears of the young slave’s ability. He immediately has Joseph brought before him to interpret his dreams. Joseph offers his interpretation, that seven years of bounty will be followed by seven years of famine, and Pharaoh is so impressed that he appoints Joseph to a post in the government. He will be in charge of storing food for the upcoming hard times. When the famine does hit, Joseph’s father and brothers in Canaan travel to Egypt to beg for assistance. Once there, they are brought before Joseph who recognizes them immediately even though they do not know him. He tests their honesty and humility and finds that his brothers have changed, so, to everyone’s great joy, he reveals his true identity. Finally, Jacob is brought to Egypt to join his family and to again see his beloved son.

Hamlet The Story of the Play
P
rince Hamlet of Denmark has been hastily summoned from his studies at Wittenberg to the Danish courts at Elsinore where he deeply mourns the recent death of his father, the king. Adding to his despair is the hasty remarriage of his mother, Gertrude, to his Uncle Claudius, who has seized the Danish throne. Norwegian Prince Fortinbras poses yet another threat to the general peace as he prepares to invade Denmark. Hamlet is informed by his trusted friend Horatio, as well as by soldiers who keep watch during the night, that his father’s ghost has appeared on the battlements of Elsinore castle. Hamlet attends the watch with them and the ghost appears, informing Hamlet that he was murdered by Claudius. The ghost implores Hamlet to take revenge against Claudius. Hamlet vows to put on an “antic disposition” in order to find out the truth about Claudius. Using feigned madness as a cover in his exploration, he begins to vacillate between action and inaction, sanity and madness, life and death. Hamlet conceives a plot wherein he can satisfy himself of Claudius’s guilt. He has a band of traveling players perform a play, graphically representing the crimes of his uncle. Claudius’s violent reaction to the play convinces Hamlet of his guilt. Claudius storms from the play where he kneels in private prayer. Hamlet discovers him and resolves to kill him then and there, only to change his mind, fearing that Claudius would be sent to heaven if he were killed while in the act of repentance. Hamlet bolts into his mother’s bedroom, where, it seems to her, he is about to kill her. Instead, he accidentally kills Polonius, the father of Ophelia and Laertes, who is eavesdropping behind the draperies. The ghost of Hamlet’s father appears

to him again, but not to the queen, who becomes convinced of Hamlet’s insanity as he carries on an animated conversation with a ghost that is invisible to her. Claudius exiles Hamlet to England, seemingly for killing Polonius. He also sends secret orders with Hamlet’s guards that Hamlet be executed when he arrives in England. Hamlet’s love, Ophelia, in madness confronts Claudius and Gertrude over their indifference toward Hamlet. She is enraged over Polonius’s death; but soon dies herself, by drowning and under suspicious circumstances. Meanwhile, word arrives in the court that Hamlet has outwitted his guards, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, by replacing his name with theirs on the execution orders, and is back in Denmark. At the same time, Laertes, who like Hamlet must avenge his father’s death, attempts to invade the castle. Claudius, however, succeeds in turning Laertes’s wrath against Hamlet. They then plot to kill Hamlet with a poisoned sword in a supposedly friendly fencing match. In case that fails, Claudius will provide a poisoned drink. The challenge arrives, and Hamlet accepts, supposing it to be a friendly contest. The two arrive in court, and Hamlet has scored two hits when his mother drinks to his health accidentally from the poisoned cup. Laertes, now desperate, catches Hamlet off guard and cuts him with the poisoned rapier. Hamlet’s anger is aroused, and he manages to exchange swords with Laertes and to wound him in return. The queen dies, and Laertes confesses his treachery, revealing the entire plot. Hamlet runs Claudius through and forces him to drink the remaining poisoned wine. Hamlet names Fortinbras, whose army is heard in the distance, as successor to the Danish throne.

Twelfth Night The Story of the Play
V
iola and Sebastian, twins, are separated during a shipwreck. Viola, thinking her brother dead, finds herself stranded in Illyria. She disguises herself as a man, Cesario, and enters the service of Duke Orsino, who is in love with Olivia and who sends Viola/Cesario to woo Lady Olivia on his behalf. Orsino does not know that Viola has fallen in love with him. Olivia is indulging in a seven-year season of mourning for a dead brother and is refusing to accept the advances of any man. Her sorrow is not so profound, however, as to keep her from falling in love with the disguised Viola. She is so in love, in fact, that she later sends Cesario/Viola a ring and invitation to return and then admits her love for “him.” Of Olivia’s household, only her steward, the melancholy Malvolio, finds a morbid pleasure in the atmosphere of mourning which Olivia has decreed. Her uncle, Sir Toby Belch, doesn’t believe in grief; he spends his time drinking with Olivia’s clown, Feste, and his dupe, Sir Andrew Aguecheek, a wealthy but foolish knight. Because Malvolio is so arrogant, Maria, Olivia’s chamber woman, plots with Sir Toby, Aguecheek, and Feste to get even. This they succeed in doing by means of a forged letter supposedly from Olivia, duping Malvolio into wearing yellow stockings cross-gartered, which she detests. Malvolio’s unaccountable antics cause Olivia to think him mad, and Sir Toby and Maria have him committed to a dark room. Meanwhile, Viola’s twin brother, Sebastian, unaware that Viola is still alive, arrives in Illyria with a sea captain, Antonio, who is an outlawed man in Illyria. Antonio lends his purse to Sebastian and departs. Seeking more “sport,” Sir Toby presses Aguecheek and Cesario/Viola into a duel. Antonio rushes to rescue the youth, whom he believes is his friend, Sebastian, and is arrested by the duke’s men and met by Cesario/Viola with a denial that he/she ever saw him or his purse. Now Aguecheek rushes to complete the duel with Cesario/Viola but encounters Viola’s twin brother instead who quickly wounds the knight. Olivia interferes and leads Sebastian to a priest and (thinking he is Cesario) marries the surprised young man.
Antonio is brought before the duke and creates more confusion by relating his adventures with Cesario/Viola, whom he still thinks is Sebastian. Olivia adds to the confusion by entering and claiming Cesario/Viola as her husband. Sir Andrew and Sir Toby in the meantime have had another encounter with Sebastian; they enter wounded and blame their hurts upon Cesario/Viola. Everything is finally made clear when Sebastian himself appears and the company sees Viola and Sebastian, twins, side by side. Viola promises to assume her maiden attire to prove her identity as Sebastian’s sister. Orsino, remembering Viola’s many expressions of affection, is content to abandon his hopeless love for Olivia and marry Viola. Sir Toby marries Maria for her wit, and only Malvolio remains single and seems dissatisfied with the happiness of the others.

Macbeth
O
The Story of the Play his wife, Lady Macbeth, is reading a letter from her husband detailing the witches’ prophecies. She sets her sights on becoming queen and plans to murder the king when he visits. That evening, while the king sleeps in his home, Macbeth carries out the act, murdering King Duncan in his bed. The king’s sons flee the country, and Macbeth is crowned king of Scotland. But he is haunted by the prediction that Banquo’s children are to inherit the throne and fearful that Macduff, a noble suspicious of Macbeth’s quick rise to power, will take matters into his own hands. Therefore, Macbeth arranges for the murder of Banquo and his only son, Fleance; however, Fleance escapes the attack and flees the country. Macbeth gives a great dinner for the court and is about to take his seat when he sees the ghost of Banquo (invisible to the guests), and his frenzied and incriminating remarks break up the feast and raise Macduff ’s suspicions even more. Macbeth goes now to consult the witches,
n a barren Scottish heath, three witches await the coming of Macbeth and Banquo, Scottish generals on their way home after a victorious battle. At the same time, on a battlefield not far away, King Duncan confers the title of thane of Cawdor upon Macbeth, sending Ross to tell Macbeth of the new honor. When Macbeth and Banquo arrive at the eerie site of the witches, the three prophesy that Macbeth (still uninformed of his new title) shall become the thane of Cawdor and later on shall be king, while Banquo shall be the father of kings although not one himself. When Ross arrives and addresses Macbeth with the new title, the witches’ prophecies already seem to be coming true, and Macbeth begins to wonder if the kingship could really be within his reach. When he reports to King Duncan, the king announces he will be visiting Macbeth’s castle and will be making his son Malcolm heir to his throne. The scene switches to Macbeth’s castle, where

who warn him to beware of Macduff. However, they also assure him that no man born of a woman can harm him and that he cannot be defeated until the forest of Birnam Wood comes to Dunsinane, the site of Macbeth’s castle. After this he is greeted with the news that Macduff has fled to England, whereupon Macbeth orders the murder of Lady Macduff and her children. While this is all happening, Lady Macbeth, who before the king’s murder appeared to be stronger than her husband, becomes completely overcome by remorse and guilt and dies, probably by her own hand. Macduff leads an army against Macbeth’s castle at Dunsinane, the soldiers covering their advance with branches cut from the trees of Birnam Wood. Macbeth’s nerves are shaken as he recalls the witches prophecies. Macduff’s army attacks the castle, and Macbeth learns that his opponent was prematurely ripped from his mother’s womb, a Caesarean birth. Macbeth realizes he is doomed but fights to his death. Macduff kills him and announces Scotland’s freedom from tyranny.

The Story of the Play Newly D& EXPANDE ED! L REMODE
t has been three years since Shakespeare’s death, and his closest friends miss him dearly. They have only some of his masterful plays in their possession, and, after hearing a badly-botched version of Hamlet at a nearby theatre, they realize that Shakespeare’s words are starting to fade into obscurity. They decide all of his original plays need to be found or recreated and published into a book, a definitive collection of his works. “Publish or vanish. That’s the choice.” So they set out to compile as many of his manuscripts as possible, going headto-head against a shady publisher, a drunken poet, shrinking resources, and their own mortality.

The Conclusion of Henry VI: Parts Two and Three The Story of the Play Part Two King Henry VI, a weak and worldly king, sits on the throne of England, while all around him the English nobility vies for position and power. At the beginning of the play, King Henry meets his new bride, Margaret, whom Suffolk has married by proxy for the king. Unknown to the others, Suffolk and Margaret are lovers and in league to control the king. The marriage contract includes the ceding of the French duchies of Anjou and Main back to the French, which incenses Henry’s powerful uncle, Gloucester, the lord protector, and puts him in opposition to Henry’s other powerful uncle, Cardinal Beaufort. Gloucester is loyal to the king, but his wife, Eleanor, has her eye on the throne. However, her plotting is exposed, she is exiled, and Gloucester is
removed from office, then murdered on Suffolk’s orders. King Henry banishes Suffolk, and he is soon captured by pirates and killed. Meanwhile, the cardinal dies, raving in madness because of his part in Gloucester’s death. A Kentish rebel, Jack Cade, leads a shortlived revolt, seizing London before his followers abandon him and he is killed. Then another revolt emerges: Richard, duke of York, argues his family’s claim to the throne is stronger than Henry’s and that he (Richard) is the rightful king. As the play ends, he leads an army against King Henry. The War of the Roses is now in full bloom: the Yorks, led by York, his sons Edward and Richard, and Warwick bear the white rose; and the Lancasters, led by Henry, Margaret, Clifford, and Northumberland hoist the red.
“ my inspiration , my friend , my piano ”
46
The Conclusion of Henry VI: Parts Two and Three The Story of the Play Part Three York, Warwick, and their forces chase Henry to London and invade the throne-room. York and Henry agree to allow Henry to remain king for the rest of his life, with York as his heir—thus disinheriting Henry’s son, Prince Edward. Infuriated, Margaret, raises her own army. Spurred on by his sons, York breaks his oath to Henry and renews his fight for the crown. In battle, Margaret and her supporters kill York, so Warwick proclaims York’s son King Edward IV. Margaret, Henry, and their followers flee to Scotland and France. King Edward’s supporters capture Henry and lock him in the tower. Warwick sails to France to forge an alliance by securing Princess Bona as Edward’s bride. He succeeds, but upon returning home finds Edward has married Lady Grey, not an advantageous
coupling. Angry at Edward’s callous actions, Warwick breaks with the king, joins Margaret, and vows to win back the crown for Henry. Warwick and Margaret succeed and install Henry once again on the throne. But their victory is short lived as Edward’s armies kill Warwick and take the throne back again. This leads to the famous Battle of Tewksbury, where the Lancastrians (led by Henry, Margaret, and Prince Edward) are soundly defeated by the Yorkists (led by King Edward IV and his brothers). The brothers kill Prince Edward; and Richard, now duke of Gloucester, kills Henry, putting the crown in the hands of the House of York and establishing peace. Peace, that is, for now—as Richard ends the play with the ominous opening lines from Richard III: “Now is the winter of our discontent . . .”

Experience sublime that this part of the world has to offer. My landscape paintings are a reflection of my appreciation of the land—the skies, the clouds, the spruce, the sage, the red rock.” Southern Utah Museum of Art: SUMA is featuring three exhibits during the Festival season. “A Study of Scale” is an exhibit featuring the work of Kate Starling, an oil painter who lives and works in the canyons of southern Utah. Her paintings portray the natural world and focus on communicating a sense of place, atmosphere and dazzling light. The exhibit will be open through July 27. Featured through October 5 will be “Homage to William Shakespeare” by Karl Momen, a painter and sculptor who is one of the last living artists trained in the Bauhaus movement. The exhibit features symbolic interpretations of some of Shakespeare’s most famous plays. A third show, “Wrath & Reverence,” features from August 5 to October 5, Al Farrow’s ornate religious structures, ritual objects, and reliquaries incorporating materials such as deconstructed guns, bullets, bone, glass, and steel. SUMA is located on the northwest corner of the Beverley Center for the Arts, just steps away from the Festival theatres. Hours are Monday through Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The museum is closed for all SUU holidays. For more information about SUMA and exclusive events for members and Festival guests (including SUMA Summer Nights), visit suu.edu/ suma or call (435) 586-5432. Backstage Tours Backstage Tours provide the perfect opportunity to peek behind the scenery and into the Festival’s various production areas and theatres to see how all the enchantment comes together. Tickets are $8 at the Ticket Office. Participants must negotiate stairs. Repertory Magic One of the most magical (and difficult) aspects of repertory theatre is the twice-a-day scene change. Lighting, scenery, props, costume, and sound technicians must hurry to change everything from the matinee to the evening show. It is a fascinating and well-choreographed process. Now, you can witness the scene change and ask questions as it happens! Tickets are $8 at the Ticket Office.

The Festival Experience (CONTINUED)
doesn’t miss a beat, in this side-splitting update of classic comedy at its best.
Words Discover a new play with Words3. Nationallyrecognized playwrights spend a week at the Festival, and Festival actors and artists present their plays as staged readings, followed by instructive discussions between the playwright, actors, and audience. Plays begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Eileen and Allen Anes Studio Theatre. Tickets are $10 at the Ticket Office. Important Note: The plays in this series are written for contemporary adult audiences and may contain themes and language not appropriate for children and that some may find offensive. The Alchemist By Ben Jonson Adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher Directed by Jesse Berger August 16, 17, 28, 30 The greed and absurdity of Jonson’s Jacobean London have never shown more brilliantly than in this new adaptation. Claiming alchemical powers, con men Face and Subtle, together with the brilliantly sexy prostitute Dol Common, scam a series of chumps that they lure to a respectable Blackfriars house. Jonson’s legendary satire spared no one, and Hatcher ensures today’s audience 3
Hudson, or the series of lamentable and untrue events following the mutiny of 1611 By Quinn Mattfeld and Danny Tieger Directed by Betsy Mugavero August 23, 24, 29, and 31 A musical tragicomedy about the famous and eponymous explorer, Hudson is the untold and untrue story of the mutiny of 1611 and the fate of Henry Hudson, his son, his crew, and his name. In Memoriam Charles L. Metten
Ace G. Pilkington
Charles L. Metten, long-time director, actor, and administrator at the Festival and founding dean of the College of Performing and Visual Arts at Southern Utah University, passed away on the morning of September 27, 2018 at the age of 91. “We learned so much from Chuck,” said Festival Founder Fred C. Adams. “We learned devotion and dedication. We learned how important the human spirit was. We will definitely miss our good friend.” Metten began his involvement with the Festival in 1966 when he directed Julius Caesar. He has since appeared as an actor at the Festival numerous times. In 2005, he began work at the Festival as the director of the Plays-in-Progress Program, nurturing new playwrights and their work through a program that has since evolved into what is now known as Words3. Metten retired from the Festival in 2017. He came to SUU in July 1998 to serve as the founding dean of the College of Performing and Visual Arts until his retirement in 2004. Under his watch, he organized and updated several bachelor degrees, started a new emphasis in graphic design, launched the MFA in Arts Administration program and moved many of the faculty and instructional functions of the college under one roof. “Chuck inspired all of us with his humor, honesty, and genuine love for humanity,” said CPVA Dean Shauna Mendini. “He loved this school and the arts. Chuck will be dearly missed.” Metten was born in Fort Bragg, California, on September 7, 1927. He studied theatre arts at the University of California in Los Angeles where he earned his bachelor and master degrees. He went on to obtain a doctorate at the State University of Iowa in speech and dramatic arts in 1960. He worked at Brigham Young University as the associate director of the Honors Program, chairman of the Department of Speech and Dramatic Arts, and chairman of the Department of Theatre and Cinematic Arts. He received many awards in his life, including the Kennedy Center ACTF Lifetime Achievement Award and the National Arts and Humanities Award. He appeared on Touched by an Angel, Promised Land, and “Movies of the Week” television films. He was above all else the dearest friend. Charles Metten made a lasting impact on the arts and culture of the region. He will be deeply missed.
Ace G. Pilkington, teacher, playwright, prolific writer, and literary seminar director at the Utah Shakespeare Festival for over thirty years, passed away on February 20, 2019. Pilkington was a fixture in the Seminar Grove as he led interesting and lively discussions of the Festival’s plays. He was admired and loved by many who made it a priority to be at the seminars early in the morning. “The conversational moments that Ace shared with patrons in the Seminar Grove were an important part of the Festival patrons’ experience,” said Michael Bahr, education director. “He cultivated stimulating conversation and was the catalyst for epiphanies and discovery and the impetus for the seminars we have today.” Ace was born on December 20, 1951, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Acel Amos and RoseMae Jensen Pilkington. He earned his MA in modern drama from Utah State University, his MLitt in English Renaissance drama from Middlebury College, and his DPhil in Shakespeare, history, and film at Oxford University. He published over 100 poems, articles, and short stories in over sixty publications in five countries, including Science and Futurism: Their Terms and Ideas (2017); Our Lady Guenevere: A Play (2017); The Fantastic Made Visible (co-editor, 2015); and Screening Shakespeare from Richard II to Henry V (1991). He was also a regular contributor to Midsummer Magazine and the Festival’s Insights study guides. Ace and his wife, Olga, together wrote the filmography for Michael Flachmann’s 2007 Shakespeare from Page to Stage, edited and translated the stories in Fairy Tales of the Russians and Other Slavs, and lectured together on International Shakespeare and The End of the Soviet Union and the Rise of the New Russia. He was an active member of the Science Fiction Writers of America and received numerous awards for his essays and poetry, including the Readers’ Choice Award for best poem of the year (“The Robots’ Farewell to the Master”) in Asimov’s Science Fiction, 1992. “I am very saddened by the passing of Ace. He was such a devoted advocate of the Festival, and his passion for Shakespeare was infectious,” concluded Brian Vaughn, artistic director. “He was a stalwart in the grove, and the impact he made on our audiences over the years is immeasurable.” So, with heavy hearts we bid farewell and many thanks to our old friend. We will miss him in the Grove. 60
