Program 1. 2. 3. 4.

Group Dance – Hundreds of Flowers Competing in Splendor Male Solo – Missing the Three Gorges Qiang Minority Dance – As happy as flowers Pipa Solo – Ambush on All Sides Pipa divertimentos are usually classified into two categories: civil and military. Ambush on All Sides is a representative military divertimento. The composer describes how General Han Xin of the Han State between Qin and Han dynasties used the military tactic of ambushing on all sides, with three or four hundred thousand troops and horses in Gaixia to defeat his enemy Xiang Yu. Making use of various Pipa techniques, such as rubbing, poking, pushing and sweeping, this music reveals the fighting scene in ancient times and describes the mighty winners.

5. Dance – Northern Folk

6. 7. 8. 9.

A flock of wild geese fly south, over the reeds and the river, disappearing into the sky. The sad sound of the horsehead fiddle on the yellow grassland represents their longing for their family and home. Broadway’s Best Fridays, 8PM, beginning Oct. 20 Get a front row seat to “She Loves Me,” “Falsettos,” “Present Laughter,” “In the Heights,” “Holiday Inn”, and more. There’s no place like KUED for a night at the theater.

VANDANA SHIVA• OCTOBER 20

Libby Gardner Concert Hall Dr. Vandana Shiva combines sharp intellectual enquiry with courageous activism, speaking out on environmental and social justice issues worldwide. Time Magazine identified Dr. Shiva as “an environmental hero” in 2003, and in November 2010, Forbes Magazine named Dr. Shiva one of the Seven Most Powerful Women on the Globe.

ANANYA DANCE THEATRE • OCTOBER 28

Tanner Dance Black Box Theatre A contemporary Indian American dance company comprised of women artists of color, Ananya Dance Theatre performs Shyamali: Sprouting Words. Inspired by the work of Dr. Vandana Shiva and other women activists of color, Shyamali is a Bengali word that means dark green and invokes resilience as a metaphor for the courage of women who speak up to create resilient and sustainable communities.

WHITE RABBIT RED RABBIT• NOVEMBER 4 - DECEMBER 2

Kingsbury Hall The play you are about to see is sealed inside an envelope. The person about to perform has never seen it. In fact, there is a new performer every night, and they’ve only been told what is absolutely necessary. We dare you not to Google this play. Slyly humorous and audaciously pointed, this “theater entertainment meets social experiment” is unlike anything, and will make you question everything. Have fun!
