Welcome

Do you know the feeling when everything seems to fall into place and you say to yourself “I must be living right.” That’s what Salt Lake Acting Company felt when Robert Scott Smith and Alexandra Harbold asked if SLAC would be interested in producing CLIMBING WITH TIGERS and collaborating with Flying Bobcat Theatrical Laboratory. This play is based on a book by Nathan Glad and Dallas Graham, founder of Red Fred Project. Pinch! Yes, SLAC has been living right. Throughout the last six years, Salt Lake Acting Company’s focus, along with producing high quality theatre, has been to give back to a community that has given so much. We’ve enjoyed performing for free on our stage, in libraries, schools, and various non-profit events. We partner with many non-profits and have built lasting relationships. We work closely with Title 1 elementary school students with preshow warm-ups and post-show Q & A. We watch their spirits lift confirming the power of theatre. All of these wonderful outreach events and community relationships have prepared SLAC for this very special play, CLIMBING WITH TIGERS. The words, magic and magical are very prominent when you glance at Red Fred Project’s website: Redfredproject.com. Dallas lives from the heart and his passion to create stories with critically ill children who face significant challenges in all 50 states inspires joy. It’s thrilling that SLAC has the opportunity to bring Nathan’s wonder-filled book to life on its stage. Nathan is extremely smart and has a great sense of humor—you feel better in his presence and want to be a better person. We’ve embraced Nathan and his family: his parents, Rachel and Ryan; his sister, Courtney; and brother, Jason. The Glad family is part of SLAC’s family now. This play fits our mission to engage and enrich community and our vision to embrace opportunities to think and act in compassionate, supportive ways. Through our arts education and outreach programs the following organizations and schools will see the play for free: Ronald McDonald House, Shriners Hospital, Angel’s Hands Foundation, Boys and Girls Club, Asian Association of Utah, Christmas Box House, Nathan Glad’s school and 2 Title 1 elementary schools. We’re thrilled to share this play with you and fill our theatre with Utah families. Thank you for climbing with us, Cynthia Executive Artistic Director

Flying Bobcat

Theatrical Laboratory Robert Scott Smith and Alexandra Harbold

Flying Bobcat is a theatrical laboratory dedicated to exploring the possibilities of storytelling in performance through language, movement, technology, and design.

I’d been dreaming of this type of work for what seems like a lifetime when I first asked Andra to collaborate with me on the POP-UP@LEO series at The Leonardo Museum. That invitation led to the creation of FEAST with Now-ID three devised original works: SENSES 5, LOVE, and MIND|MATTER. It stirred up our curiosity about forming an ongoing creative partnership and ultimately inspired us to form our own totem and company, Flying + Bobcat. It also initiated other collaborative relationships that we have continued to build upon in CLIMBING WITH TIGERS. We recognize that what we dream of creating is only achievable through collaboration and mad, determined play. Which is evident in our most recent collaborations that have included; LOST IN THE WOODS a theatrical concert at The Masonic Temple with the SLC Men's Choir; FEAST a site-specific performance at the Great Saltair with choreographer Charlotte BoyeChristensen, NOW-ID and NYC Playwright Troy Deutsch. Early in our work at The Leonardo, we discovered a book by Michael J Gelb, in which he explored what he identified as the guiding principles of Leonardo da Vinci: Curiosità, Dimostrazione, Sensazione, Sfumato, Arte/Scienza, Corporalità, and Connessione. We adopted those principles as a blueprint for our own creative process and hope they are evident in our work: curiosity and an appetite to learn; responsive experimentation; storytelling that taps into the potential and expressivity of the body and the senses; and an appreciation for the amplification of ideas possible through collaboration. Thank you to Salt Lake Acting Company for saying yes to Troy Deutsch’s beautiful adaptation of Nathan & Dallas’ CLIMBING WITH TIGERS and to this production. SLAC has supported the development of this new work at every turn and afforded us the opportunity to assemble this undeniably brilliant creative team whose work daily outstrips our dreams of what the project could be. Let us take you to a magic place…. Robert Scott Smith and Alexandra Harbold, Flying Bobcat Co-Founders and Co-Artistic Directors

In The Room

With co-authors of the book CLIMBING WITH TIGERS, Dallas Graham and Nathan Glad Dallas and Nathan sit down with SLAC's Erika Ahlin.

Erika: Let’s get started! Tell the audience a little bit about yourselves. Dallas: I’ll go first, just because I am wearing leather boots. I’m Dallas, I live in Salt Lake City and I love Salt Lake Acting Company. I’m sitting here with this really great friend of mine. And we are about 3 decades apart in age, but I feel like we’re also kind of close in age too in a bird kind of way. So this is Nathan, but I’ll let Nathan speak for himself. Nathan: Hi I’m Nathan Glad and I wrote the book Climbing with Tigers and I have a disease called Osteogenesis Imperfecta, but the abbreviation is OI. Erika: Nathan, you are 9-years-old and are already a published author. How does it feel? Nathan: Feels the same…like any other normal day. Erika: I know a lot of adults who would love to write a book and they haven’t quite done it yet, but hopefully they will. Dallas, will you tell me a little bit about the Red Fred Project? Dallas: Sure. A couple years ago, I had this idea, or rather my birds (The Jolly Troop) had an idea, that we wanted to write books with kids. The kids that we wanted to work with had critical illnesses, meaning these were illnesses or diseases that really impacted daily living. I reached out to some friends of mine in the community in Salt Lake and two different friends pointed me to this man named Steve. Steve works with a bunch of families, about 300 of them, in Salt Lake

City. These families with kids who have rare diseases, have gotten together through this organization called Angel's Hands Foundation. And they do really cool stuff, they have events, they pull families together, they make really great things happen with the kids and their families. So when I met Steve, I said “hey, two friends of mine said I needed to meet you and that you knew someone I should meet.” And it was in seconds he said, “I know exactly who you need to meet. His name is Nathan Glad.” And then he pulled up a picture. I had never met Nathan or seen him, but we talked about Nathan for an hour and then he gave me the number to Nathan’s parents. So I called them and said, “hey you guys, I’ve heard about you, what would you think about making a book together?” Erika: And the rest is history. Tell us about writing the book—Nathan, did you have fun writing the book? Nathan: Yeah, it took a long time, that’s for sure because we got sick, we had other events, just a lot of obstacles in the way. But we did get it done. Erika: It’s a beautiful story. What was your favorite part about writing it? Nathan: Making my bird. Erika: What’s your bird’s name? Nathan: Blue. Erika: Can you tell us a little bit about Blue? Nathan: He’s this little black bird that can’t fly. And he wants to go and see the world but

NATHAN GLAD is the happiest boy you will meet. He takes nothing for granted and is completely genuine in his passion for people and life. You will never find a more grateful boy; in fact, his first spoken words were “gank you.” Nathan’s condition is Osteogenesis Imperfecta or O.I. for short (also known as Brittle Bones). He breaks his bones on average once a month—usually a long bone like a femur or humerus. He has been through a dozen surgeries to place rods in his legs and arms—to both straighten and strengthen his bones. Nathan’s biggest goal right now is to walk. He is working hard at physical therapy to get to the point where he can stand and, hopefully, someday take his first steps! Nathan loves playing baseball for his miracle league team, the Angels, and is fascinated with speedy things (cars, motorcycles and rockets).

he can’t because he can’t fly. And he sees the Jolly Troop and he asks them to take him on an adventure with them. And they say, “Alright, come on!” and he’s like, “But I can’t!” And you’ll have to read the rest! Erika: Your school is coming to see CLIMBING WITH TIGERS, how do you feel about that? Nathan: I think they’ll like it. Most of them have read the book. Probably my whole school. I think a lot of people are fighting for the book in the library. I don’t check it out though because I know someone else has got it. Erika: You both just saw a rehearsal, what do you think so far? What are you most excited to see come to life? Nathan: I think it is amazing. I just think this is really cool. Dallas: I’m so excited to see the costumes, I’m excited to see the birds fly, and I’m excited to see Blue turn into kind of a human in the actors, and the set design is incredible, it’s amazing. Erika: Dallas, what does it mean for the Red Fred Project to have the story come alive on stage? Dallas: I think it means it’s this galactic beautiful ripple that we weren’t expecting to happen. We’re trying to make books with children in different states. I think it just shows the sort of connectivity and the influence that a creative community can have in a city to help bring awareness, cause delight, inspire imagination. So in a very awesome, wonderful way, it shows us that in other communities Boise, Tennessee, anywhere else that we’ve

been, it would be so great to see these communities think, “oh why don’t we make plays with our kids.” Salt Lake Acting Company’s showing that this is possible and that there is a way to do that. It’s gorgeous. I can’t say enough about it. It’s amazing. Erika: Nathan, is there anything else you’d like to say to the audience? Dallas: (whispers to Nathan) How about like, “Hey, come to the show!” Nathan: Come to the show! Have a good time! Erika: I think that’s just perfect. Thank you guys so much! Nathan: Tweet ya later!

DALLAS GRAHAM is the founder and creator of the Red Fred Project: a children’s

book collaboration between himself and 50 children with critical illnesses across the 50 states. He created Red Fred and his colorful friends, The Jolly Troop, six years ago and has been telling stories with them ever since. Dallas is a photographer, graphic designer, writer, and enjoys discovering creative ways of connecting people through their stories. He has produced a number of personal and community driven projects and can’t seem to turn off his “idea” switch. The Red Fred Project is a culmination of three of his favorite things: narratives, hope and children.

DID YOU KNOW? Salt Lake Acting Company’s reach extends much further than the walls of the 19th Ward House. Our suite of arts education, outreach and new play development programs connect us to the community like never before. • The University Professional Theatre Program helps university and college students get one step closer to winning that Tony Award, through paid professional experience with SLAC. Since 2013, 53 students have benefited from this program, and are practicing their acceptance speech. • SLAC’s Title I Arts Education Program opens the world of theatre to more than 1,300 Title I elementary students who see our children’s show for free. They laugh with us, dance with us, applauded what we do right, and point out what we might have missed – all while brightening up our day. • The SLAC Scholarship gives four deserving young theatre artists from colleges and universities around Utah the freedom and flexibility to pursue meaningful opportunities in the arts, enriching our community while also jumpstarting their careers. The colleges and universities are blown away by a professional theatre company giving a scholarship. • SLAC makes meaningful contributions to the American Theatre arena through our New Play Development programs: ∏∏ For 21 years, the New Play Sounding Series has provided a safe, creative space for playwrights and audiences to explore the questions that arise as a new play is being developed for full production. STREETLIGHT WOODPECKER, TWO STORIES, HOW TO MAKE A ROPE SWING, and many other SLAC productions have been workshopped in the NPSS.

DID YOU KNOW? ∏∏ In 2015, SLAC started a unique and innovative program called the Salt Lake Acting Company Playwrights’ Lab. The Lab assembles a company of artists from Utah and all around the country to investigate and develop brand new scripts. The Lab is writer-led and writer-focused, giving playwrights invaluable space and resources to deepen their work. “The experience of the lab was incredibly rejuvenating. I came back to NYC, back into processes that are on-going, midway complete or launching with more creative thinking, more simple thinking and certainly more patience. It reminded me that the bottom line is that we are ALL storytellers. And telling a good story in the best way possible, is all we need to keep our eye on. SLAC rocks!”Tamilla Woodard, Director ∏∏ SLAC’s partnership with the David Ross Fetzer Foundation for Emerging Artists provides playwrights 35 and younger an opportunity to workshop a new script with a team of professional theatre artists, culminating in a public reading at SLAC. Last year's reading was met with so much unforeseen excitement, we had to add chairs! • For each production, we partner with nonprofit organizations whose mission exemplifies or addresses a theme or idea from the play. In the past, we’ve been lucky to partner with Canine’s with a Cause, Alzheimer’s Association, Music & Memory Coalition, Fisher House SLC, Urban Crossroads Center, Bad Dog Arts and more! • Our Green Room Gallery is a space that allows us to nurture our local, creative community, and celebrate the reinforcements born between the visual and performing arts. This season we have been very lucky to partner with ART ACCESS, who has filled our Green Room Gallery with artwork by veterans, individuals with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers, and members of the Deaf community.

Thanks to the generous support of donors and corporate sponsors, we can pilot and implement innovative programs that impact the theatre world and place SLAC on the national stage. Join us in inspiring the next generation of theatre goers, actors, designers, stage managers, directors and arts administrators! If you would like to learn more about one or all these vital programs, please contact Olivia at 801.363.7522 or olivia@saltlakeactingcompany.org

Red Fred Partnership Salt Lake Acting Company is thrilled to be partnering with The Red Fred project during CLIMBING WITH TIGERS. The book CLIMBING WITH TIGERS was created through this absolutely beautiful organization. The Red Fred Project is a silver-starred, magical collaboration through which Dallas Graham co-creates original stories in the form of self-published books with 50 children with critical illnesses across the 50 states. The books use photography, graphic design, story-telling techniques and star a likable group of birds made from commas and exclamation marks called The Jolly Troop. These magical, creative children have faced significant challenges in short lifetimes— with humor, compassion and wisdom-filled stories to share. Dallas wants to know how they view the world and help them create an original, one-of-a-kind book, publish it, place it in their hands and say, “Way to go! You’ve published a story; you’ve created a book!” Pick up your very own copy of CLIMBING WITH TIGERS in SLAC’s lobby, and visit redfredproject.com to learn more about this incredible organization.

The Painful Truth Pain is an unbidden guest, humanity’s shadow companion down through the ages. It is a despoiler of dreams and a thief. Chronic pain can appear suddenly in a person’s life, changing it forever. Dr. Lynn R. Webster puts a face on chronic pain through the lives of his patients, and provides an intimate view of what it is like to live with it. The Painful Truth will open your eyes to the world of those who are stigmatized and marginalized by our society and healthcare system. Yet the new book offers hope and a path forward for those willing to engage in a crusade against the human race’s primal enemy—pain.

“This remarkable book will change the way this country thinks about pain, pain management, and those who struggle with pain every day. Dr. Webster uses true stories and his vast experience to remind us why pain is a reality that cannot be ignored.” —Paul Gileno, founder and president, U.S. Pain Foundation
