WELCOME Welcome to the world premiere of FORM OF A GIRL UNKNOWN by Charly Evon Simpson. This new work from one of the country’s most exciting emerging voices was the recipient of the 2018 David Fetzer Foundation for Emerging Artists Award, having been selected over 35 script submissions from around the country. Subsequently, FORM OF A GIRL UNKNOWN was further developed in a week-long workshop at SLAC under the guidance and support of a team of professional artists. The enthusiastic audience response after the staged reading inspired hopeful anticipation for a SLAC production. We’re so pleased that this has become a reality. The Davey Foundation was created by Betsy Ross to honor the life of her son, David Ross Fetzer, and his passion as a theatre artist and filmmaker. The Foundation made grants available to artists aged 35 or younger for the development of innovative film and theatre projects. We’re very proud to have been partners with The Davey Foundation since 2015, and because of this partnership, plays such as THE FERMI PARADOX by Katherine Vondy, SYNCHRONICITY by Brynne Frauenhoffer, and A LAND OF NO MERCY by Rae Binstock each received caring support, creative guidance, and a staged reading. I want to express my gratitude to Betsy and The Davey Foundation. Our working together helped SLAC reach a higher level in play development. On a personal note, it’s an honor to know Betsy and to witness her love, strength, resilience, and humor. Thank you for being here at the forefront of SLAC’s contribution to the development of new American plays and to nurturing voices and stories that need to be heard. DIRECTOR’S NOTE If there is one thing all twelve year olds have in common, it’s this: Being twelve is not easy. The transition from childhood to adulthood is fraught with constant physical and emotional change. Charly’s play FORM OF A GIRL UNKNOWN invites us to remember what it was to be twelve years old, and all the confusion that comes along with it. For most, it’s when we decide who we are, what we want and how we are evolving in the world. I know I’m biased, but our adolescent protagonist Amali is one of the greatest characters ever written. She is unapologetically curious and open to everything around her. She is also desperate to know everything. And I do mean everything. She’s so hungry for answers that when she can’t find them, she feels lost. I often call Amali a detective or scientist, deciphering clues and conducting experiments in the laboratory of her world. But knowledge has limits, and that’s one of the lessons of this play. How do we find peace in the unknown? And in that space of mystery, what other ways can we fill the gap? With love and lots of imagination. This is the kind of play I wish I had when I was Amali’s age. The journey of exploring the unknown has brought a freedom of expression I didn’t know was possible in the American Theater. So, welcome friends. I hope you enjoy the ride as much as I have.

She was last seen performing with the Lyric Repertory Company where she played Beneatha Younger in A RAISIN IN THE SUN. are both thrilled to working again at SLAC again. They were the co-creators of the really really great big bear in SLAC’s production of Steven Yockey’s, MERCURY. As-well-as puppets for HAND TO GOD, ART DOG, and BLACKBERRY WINTER. Additionally, they have created puppets for Westminster College’s annual Greek Show HERACLES, and most recently created puppets for Youth Theatre at the University of Utah’s production of ALICE, presented in conjunction with Kingsbury Presents at Kingsbury Hall. Both Glenn and Linda hold an MFAs in Theatre from the University of Utah. Glenn is also an instructional coach for the Granite School District for BTS Fine Arts elementary teachers. Linda is a BTS Arts Integration Coach for the Granite District as well. Director) came to SLAC as an actor in SATURDAY’S VOYEUR 2004. Utah audiences have seen him in dozens of shows at Pioneer Theatre Company, Egyptian Theatre Company, Utah Musical Theatre, Lyric Repertory Theatre, and many others. He’s worn just about every hat in the business, working as a designer, manager, technician, builder, writer and director in countless shows. Since 2006, Justin’s been the Managing Director of Walk-Ons, Inc. a Salt Lake company with a mission to bring lowcost theater to under-served audiences. Through their Senior Theatre Project, Walk-Ons has toured to over fifty Utah community centers and retirement facilities with a shifting line-up of original short plays by, for and about seniors.

CYNTHIA FLEMING (Executive Artistic
Director) has been in the world of dance and theatre professionally for over 40 years, during which time she performed in the Broadway, National and International companies with A CHORUS LINE. Since 1995 she has worn many hats at SLAC, including Choreographer, Director, Box Office Manager and Director of Audience Services. She developed SLAC’s high quality customer service titled: Mayberry meets Space Odyssey, which is the foundation for the recordbreaking number of subscribers. She conceived and created the position of Director of Communication and Audience Development and assembled the communication team to generate a renewed energy and excitement about the theatre. In 2010 she became CoExecutive Producer and is now honored to be SLAC’s Executive Artistic Director. Cynthia remains a working artist in the theatre and has choreographed many SLAC productions including SATURDAY’S VOYEUR for 16 years and directed/ choreographed this musical for 7 years. Cynthia is proud to serve SLAC and its mission to engage and enrich community through brave contemporary theatre.

Title I Arts Education Program Now entering its second decade, SLAC’s Title I Arts Education Program invites over 1,900 underserved K-2 students from Title I schools to attend our annual children’s show free of charge. Children between the ages of 5 and 7 are at a critical developmental stage to absorb arts experiences. They are endlessly forging new connections- reading the book in anticipation of the show, sitting in the chairs as the lights go down, clapping and cheering with the crowd, processing the experience with their friends, teachers, and families- each step expands their thinking, brings what they are learning in school to life in dynamic and stimulating ways, and ultimately promotes deep engagement in the learning process. Green Room Gallery Curated by long-time subscriber Cheryl Cope Cheryl grew up in Ogden. Her mother, sister and a niece are all artists. “I always had good art around me. When I could, I felt it was my job to appreciate it, buy it and hang it. I have managed Art Galleries, been a regular attendee at Juried Art Fairs and bought in Galleries as I travel. My home ran out of wall space years ago. A friend helped me hang some two and three deep. My ceilings are 10 feet high. If the painting is professionally framed, that alone will help it last in good condition. I own oil paintings, water colors, wood cuts, signed and numbered prints, illustrations, Fine art Photography, Navajo Rugs. I attended my first SLAC performance, Voyeur I think, in the 1980’s. Became a subscriber and bought a “seat in the house”. I enjoy this Theatre and consider it my home company. “
