Welcome Welcome to HAND TO GOD by Robert Askins! Salt Lake Acting Company prides itself on bringing together the best of the best in local artists to serve our plays. After building the perfect team for HAND TO GOD, we realized that most of the key players have strong University of Utah ties. Director, Chris DuVal is the Head of the Actor Training Program; Set Designer, Gage Williams is the Department Chair; Sound Designer, Jennifer Jackson is an Adjunct Instructor and Sound Design Faculty Advisor; Actor, Alexandra Harbold is an Adjunct Instructor. The expertise that they bring to the table enhances the SLAC experience, not only for our audiences, but for everyone involved in putting this hilarious tale on its feet. We’re very fortunate that their devotion to this art form extends beyond being an educator in a classroom. They are an inspiration to their students, working tirelessly to fully prepare these emerging artists who dream of making theatre their life’s work. This ideal is the basis of SLAC’s University Professional Theatre Program, comprised of many U of U students. (See page 27 for more details!) We extend our thanks to the theatre department at the University of Utah for their generosity, sharing the talents of such superb educators and students with our community. And, as always, we thank you – our beloved audience. Your open and adventurous spirit inspires us to reach new heights in realizing brave, new plays. With love, Cynthia Executive Artistic Director

In The Room with Playwright Robert Askins A phone interview with SLAC’s Cynthia Fleming and Erika Ahlin: Cynthia: This is your first comedy and it is the most produced play in the nation. That must feel pretty good. Robert: Yes, it certainly does. The funny thing is the first round of reviews are chancy, then the audiences really loved it and then Kevin Moon picked it up and thought it could go to Broadway. The little play that could is now the play that is everywhere. And that is a special thing. Erika: How many productions of HAND TO GOD have you been able to see? Robert: Out of the 51 professional and non-professional productions I have only been able to see four of them. I have seen Chicago, DC, Houston, and Boston.

the emotional core of the piece. It’s that, and the rowdy sex scenes between humans and puppets. It has been a joy to watch the actors rise to the challenge of the puppet. One of the things we underestimate is the ability that we as humans have to do things live on stage. Fuck all the special effects, that is one of the great things about live theatre; you are in a room with an actor, live. As a playwright, I do anything I can to force people do to hard things to delight the audience. Erika: You grew up in Cypress, Texas and your personal journey was a big inspiration for this play. Is there anything in particular that made you want to write this play?

Robert: You know, I had been struggling with my personal journey. My father passed when I was sixteen, and I had a Erika: Of those that you saw, what difficult time dealing with that within the aspects stay the same between confines of the church. Clearly my father productions? was not a perfect person, but my father Robert: That is actually a harder question was living a life, he had a good job and than what was different between all he was good with everyone. Everyone in of them. I think the productions have the church just kept saying, “God has a had different solutions to different plan, it’s God’s plan.” It made me very problems. I really liked Boston because angry when I was young. Because I was they had a completely different take told that if you do these certain things, of the show. They were really into the it will help you live a good and fulfilled horror of the show and the question life, and it hasn’t. It is a complete and of whether Jason is possessed or not. total failure of goodness, and it helps They were like, “Yes, Yes he is, he is one along the road to a complete, the devil.” That was pretty rowdy. The destructive nihilist, which in some ways Chicago production was pretty similar to Tyrone represents. I had to come to what we had done on Broadway and the terms with what it means to write about D.C. production was an environmental Texas and the South. These are people production. The Alley downstairs theater who are not hyper-educated liberals was really interesting. It was fun to from New York. So how does one write a watch how the comedy changed in the world in which Chick-fil-A is where one different spaces. But the thing that stays eats and Walmart is where one shops? the same is the relationship between The dominant culture events are church the mother and son. That sort of forms and a movie. So you get Hand to God.

14

www.saltlakeactingcompany.org

Erika: Have you been to Salt Lake City before? Robert: No I have not but I am so excited. Erika: We are kind of in a religion dominated culture. I think it will be exciting for our audiences to see this play because there are parallels they can make. Do you think our audience will react to this play differently than other cities? Robert: The play enjoys a large amount of indulgence, in my experience, from believers and non-believers. The play is outrageous enough to thread a needle

so people don’t feel, until the scene between Margery and the Pastor, like it is attacking religion. The play is talking about how hard it is within that system to grieve, and how the emotions get squeezed within the mechanics within the church. I will find it as interesting as anyone else to see how people from the Mormon Church take this in. I cannot wait to sit in the audience and listen. I wonder if people will see this just as Lutherans in Texas. People use those minor distinctions to shield themselves from other parts of the greater whole. So I have absolutely no idea how people will take this and I am very excited.

Director's Notes

(Right to Left: Ava Kostia, Nathan Vaughn, Daniel Beecher, Riley O'Toole, Christopher DuVal, Amy Ware, Alexandra Harbold)

Hand to God offers us a world of vibrancy and visceral characters that are recognizable, complex, and also contradictory – not cardboard cutouts. They are all up to their eyeballs in pain, and within that pain, they also have an equal measure of hope. As Mel Brooks has said, “Tragedy is what happens to me. Comedy is what happens to you.” The characters in the play are in their moment of “tragedy.” The moment in their lives that they will look back on as the precipice from which they almost fell. For us, however, we recognize their innate innocence, their innate faith and hope that their lives will not always remain chaotic, and the lengths that we all go to avoid looking at our true selves. It is a story that is irreverent, bold, at times disturbing, and always humanly recognizable in its complexity of what actually constitutes good and bad, and as Shakespeare aptly reminds us, ultimately “there is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so”. It’s a twisted puppet-from-hell filled version of a Chekhovian comedy: it’s funny because it’s so human. And humans go to extraordinary depths to relieve themselves from anything that feels uncomfortable, only to find that cutting off one’s nose to spite one’s face is not an ideal solution. Through the lens of this play we see more clearly our ability to laugh at our own foibles, our own pains, our own loneliness, and our own extraordinary potential for remarkable clarity and hope.

Announcing Salt Lake Acting Company’s 47th Season! SURELY GOODNESS AND MERCY

HIR

by Chisa Hutchinson September 6 – October 15, 2017 Director: Alicia Washington Assistant Director: Dee-Dee Darby-Duffin

by Taylor Mac February 7 – March 11, 2018 Director: TBA

In an under-funded African-American school in Newark, New Jersey, a twelve-year old Bible-toting, motherless outcast with a photographic memory meets a sixty-year old childless woman who works in the school cafeteria. Against all odds, together they teach and learn the real meaning of life.

Chaos reigns in this gender bending comedy about the most dysfunctional family in America. A dishonorably discharged vet returns home to a mother liberated from an oppressive marriage, a sister on “mones” in the process of changing genders, and a father asleep in a clown costume. And nobody is doing the dishes anymore.

Salt Lake Acting Company is elated to continue our partnership with Art Access during the run of HAND TO GOD. Art Access is a community-focused organization that strives to demonstrate that the arts are a universal vehicle for drawing out our similarities, celebrating our differences, and ultimately connecting us to each other. Through its philosophy of inclusion, Art Access serves people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. Child’s Play, an exhibit of work by artist Daren Young, is a series of allegorical illustrations that depict the childish way we often behave in our adult interactions with each other. These drawings look like they might be drawings from a children’s book—colorful, whimsical, and yet slightly twisted. This exhibit is meant to amuse and entertain, but also allow you to reflect on your own humanity and the many relationships that are part of our collective life experience.
