TITLE I ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAM One of the most rewarding aspects of producing children’s theatre for Salt Lake Acting Company is its Title I Arts Education Program, which allows over 2,000 underprivileged schoolchildren to experience the magic of live theatre at no cost to them or their schools. With arts education receiving less and less attention and funding, this program plays a vital role in providing a more wellrounded education to Utah students. Every children’s play that SLAC produces is based on a literary work. SLAC creates a study guide to accompany each play and distributes it to every class that attends the Title I Arts Education Program. The guide includes learning activities to be completed before and after the children see the play, reinforcing the connection between literacy and the arts. As Gayle Andrews, a Kindergarten teacher at Rose Park Elementary (a Title I school), says, “It lets children see books come to life. They also learn to appreciate music, dance, and for some it is their first (only) exposure to theatre.”

SLAC’s 2018 Title I Arts Education Program will serve the following Utah Title I schools: Backman Elementary North Star Elementary Edison Elementary Roosevelt Elementary Franklin Elementary Rose Park Elementary Jackling Elementary Taylorsville Elementary Liberty Elementary Washington Elementary Lincoln Elementary Whittier Elementary Meadowlark Elementary Woodrow Wilson Elementary Mountain View Elementary

University Professional Theatre Program

Hannah Ensign (Assistant Director): Being able to work at a professional theatre like SLAC is something that I think will be really helpful for making connections in the world of Theatre for Young Audiences, which is a world that I am very new to. I will become more versed in speaking the language of designers and collaborating with them to create the world of this play, as well as learn to create and approach choreography from a big picture perspective. Aaron Hoenig (Sound Mixer): Working with SLAC has always been a very enriching experience. I love being able to put my theatrical skills to use in a professional setting while still being in school. SLAC is a great place to not only practice theatrical skills but also to learn more about the theatrical world in a friendly environment. Fiona Hannan (Actor): I am extraordinarily grateful for the opportunity to work at SLAC on PINKALICIOUS! The skills and experience I will gain from working at a professional theatre during my time as a student are invaluable -- experience is the best teacher. I am so eager to work on a show with passionate professionals who will undoubtedly help me learn and grow, both as a person and a performer. Micki Martinez (Actor): I have learned so much being a part of this program and continue to use tools I have been given here in each production I am a part of. Experiences like this one are so valuable to a young actor and I’m so grateful to have been given this wonderful opportunity.

IN THE ROOM WITH

DIRECTOR PENELOPE CAYWOOD

Penny: So, Presley, here we are again. I’m about to embark on directing the ninth annual children show at Salt Lake Acting Company. I’m feeling pretty excited. What do you think about that? Presley: I’m excited that you’re directing a show again. I always think that your kid shows are really great and cool. I really like this show because it’s fun and cute. Penny: This year you got to sit in on most of the auditions and callbacks. I don’t think you had that opportunity before? Presley: Mom, (sigh), I have done that before. But it’s always fun to see the new people who come in and hear their beautiful voices and see their great acting skills. Just meeting new people is always fun. Penny: Is there anything different that you’ve noticed in this particular story compared to the other productions that I’ve worked on for SLAC? Presley: Well, I’ve noticed that it’s very upbeat and the songs are very fast. The other shows you’ve done have also been exciting, but I feel like this is going to be a very immersive show for some of the smaller kids in the audience Penny: What do you mean by immersive? Presley: At some points, the actors talk directly to the audience and I feel like that will be exciting to see how they respond. Penny: When you were little you loved princesses and pink, but you also loved racecars, snakes and the color black. You were never really into the Pinkalicious books. Has the show changed your mind? Presley: It hasn’t completely changed my mind. I mean I’ve never been the kind of girl who always has to wear pink. I was never the girl who was always wearing dresses. That’s just not me. But the Pinkalicious books aren’t only about pink and dancing and having fun all the time. There are other things they cover, like eating healthy and that boys can like pink, too, and that people shouldn’t judge you if you’re different. Penny: I have some returning cast members that I’ve done shows with before. Some of the actors have a lot of professional experience and some are still in school studying acting. Do you think that’s helpful to have cast members that have worked with me before and have a lot of experience?

14

www.saltlakeactingcompany.org

& HER DAUGHTER, PRESLEY Presley: I do think it’s helpful because some of the people who are newer to SLAC can see them working and realize, “Oh, this is how older actors work. This is how they express themselves in rehearsal. They’re not shy. They try new things.” Penny: I have always felt really lucky that you’ve been able to come to rehearsal with me - whether it’s in my regular job at the University of Utah or it’s here at Salt Lake Acting Company. It’s kind of an incredible perk of working on family friendly material in these places and spaces. You have been at SLAC for nine years. What has it meant to you growing up in the theater? Presley: I love SLAC. It’s like a second home to me. Everyone is so kind and sweet there. I also feel very lucky to be able to go to the theater and feel comfortable there and be able to watch the rehearsals. That’s always a cool experience to see how the show progresses. Yeah, I just I love SLAC and I look forward to being able to see more shows there one day. Penny: So as a director, when I’m watching a show, I’m not always just sitting back and enjoying it. I am also thinking about the audiences’ reactions. Do you ever think about the audiences’ reactions? Presley: I always look to see if the audience genuinely enjoys it. Are they laughing? And what parts are particularly laughing at? I mean, they always laugh because you make such great shows, but I like to see specifically what they laugh at so when I’m in a show at youth theatre or somewhere else and I learn from it and take some of those tips. Penny: What’s your favorite part in the show? Presley: I really like the cupcake dreams. But I also like when Pinkalicious goes to the park and gets stuck in the flowers. I like the song they sing there. Penny: Would you ever like to be in one of these children shows that I direct? Presley: I mean, yeah! Are you really asking? Is there a part for me? You should give me a part. There should be parts for kids in these shows. I love acting here at SLAC and I feel like that would be so much fun! Mom?? Mom!

GREEN ROOM GALLERY For the ninth year running, we welcome students of all ages from the Visual Art Institute in Salt Lake City to exhibit in the Green Room Gallery during our children’s production — inspired by the school’s efforts to plant the seed of creative curiosity early in life. Established in 1978, VAI encourages students to integrate their creativity into every aspect of their thinking, education and life, and provides exceptional visual art programs to elementary through high school students, including year-round classes and an intensive figurative workshop in the summer. VAI provides high-quality instruction and classes in a wide range of media focusing on essential applied skills, working largely from life, as well as conceptual thinking. Many VAI students go on to earn local, state, and national awards as well as entrance and scholarships to top universities and art schools throughout the country. You’ll find literature about the Visual Art Institute in the Gallery. Please stop in to enjoy the exhibition.

DISCUSSION BEFORE AND AFTER THE PLAY! Before the play…

After the play…

1. Pinkalicious loves the color pink. What is your favorite color and why?

1. Which character in the play was your favorite and why?

2. Pinkalicious has a mom, a dad, and a younger brother in her family, but there are a lot of ways to make a family. Who are the members in your family?

2. Did you notice anything in the play that was different from the book? What did you see?

3. This story is filled with characters who have unique traits that make them special. Can you think of things about you and your friends that make you different from each other? How about things that you have in common? 4. After Pinkalicious eats green food, she realizes it’s not so bad. Have you ever been scared to do something, but then liked it after you tried it?

3. What are some things you have in common with the characters in the play? 4. Peter discovers that his love of the color pink makes him special. What are some things about you that make you unique and special? 5. Did you have a favorite scene or song in the play? What was it and why?

5. Pinkalicious has a best friend named Alison. Do you have a best friend? Have you ever had a disagreement with your friend? How did you solve it?
