Welcome Welcome to the World Premiere of STREETLIGHT WOODPECKER by Utah playwright, Shawn Fisher. It’s your appreciation of new work, expansive thinking and wondrous journeys that allows Salt Lake Acting Company to soar to new heights in developing and producing new plays. You are at the heart of all our efforts and we thank you and give you a standing ovation. The month of February is a wild ride of creativity. Call it having a sense of adventure or being brave, the act of creativity takes a lot of guts and is the essence of SLAC. Our hats are off to all the amazing creative artists that said ‘YES’ and generously shared their passion for new work. On the first of February, we celebrated four magnificent women, Julie Jensen, Anne Cullimore Decker, Margaret Battin and Tracy Callahan at SLAC’s New Play Sounding Series where Julie’s play WINTER was read. This same day we collected scripts for The David Fetzer Foundation/Salt Lake Acting Company partnership in which one playwright 35 years of age or younger will be given the opportunity to develop a new play by participating in a workshop and reading at SLAC. Now in rehearsal in the Chapel theatre preparing for its March opening is CLIMBING WITH TIGERS. This World Premiere is a beautiful collaboration with Flying Bobcat Theatrical Laboratory and The Red Fred Project. This play is adapted for the stage by Troy Deutsch and based on a book by Nathan Glad and Dallas Graham. If you haven’t booked your tickets for this visually spectacular adventure for all ages, do so now. February 20th - 27th, 40 more artists will be in the building from 9am to 9pm with one purpose in mind: to serve four playwrights in developing their plays. SLAC’s Playwrights’ Lab launched last year and was a transformative experience for everyone involved. The Lab put SLAC on the map nationally and deepened our artistic relationships locally. Speaking of national recognition, Allison Considine from American Theatre Magazine is doing a story on SLAC and CLIMBING WITH TIGERS. Her visit will also include observing our Playwrights’ Lab and attending STREETLIGHT WOODPECKER. This prestigious magazine is the nation's only general-circulation magazine devoted to theatre. It is a huge honor for SLAC to be featured. Another VIP visitor during this time is the Executive Director of the National New Play Network, Nan Barnett. This vital organization is the country’s alliance of nonprofit theatres that champions the development, production and continued life of new plays. We’re thrilled to show her how incredible SLAC is! Thank you for being here, -Cynthia Fleming, Executive Artistic Director

In The Room With

Shawn Fisher and Richie Call

Playwright Shawn Fisher and Director Richie Call discuss STREETLIGHT WOODPECKER with SLAC’s Cynthia Fleming and Erika Ahlin Erika: Thank you for being here, welcome to “The Room.” Shawn, what inspired you to tell this story? Shawn: I was really interested in the ideas of how family, culture and faith, the people you have grown up with, the people who have interested you, how those people and your background affect your perception of yourself and how that might lead to certain choices that one makes in life. Cynthia: Where does the veteran come in? Shawn: You know, I don’t think I started with the veteran idea initially. The idea that there is this character whose manhood was in question throughout his life, his whole family expected more from him. How does this person live his life, and prove that he’s a man, and prove that he’s something, especially for a character that is written as not the most masculine, tough, athletic type of character? Going off to war and being able to come back and have a uniform and being able to talk about his experiences as a marine, would be, sort of, the ultimate demonstration of his manhood. Erika: The play takes place in an Irish-Catholic neighborhood in Philadelphia. What is the significance of this setting? Shawn: First of all, when you get to the Northeast, especially places like Philly—I didn’t grow up in Philadelphia, but just outside—you have all these cultural pockets, which have very strong, deeply held traditions that are usually connected to ancestry somewhere else. I wanted the characters, at least a few of them, to be religious characters. I felt like the best parallel (to Utah audiences) would be Catholic because you have strong leadership in the Catholic Church and you have strong traditions. Growing up where I grew up, surrounded by a lot of Italian families, the connection to those traditions is a no nonsense thing. You don’t question it, you don’t debate it. It makes for really interesting conversations over pasta dinners, that sort of thing. So, I felt that was an environment that would really lend itself to interesting moments between the characters.

24

www.saltlakeactingcompany.org

Director Richie Call & Playwright Shawn Fisher

Erika: This is a brand new play receiving its World Premiere at SLAC. What are you most looking forward to? Richie: That’s a big question. I think what I’m looking forward to is today (the first rehearsal). We read it with each other, we read it in the living room, and we’ve just been doing this play so much without them (the actors), that I’m looking forward to having it come from them today and hearing what they do with it. I think that’s one of the strengths of Shawn’s writing. He’s really good at picking up on the strengths of actors, on the strengths of directors and he’ll hear something and go “oh man… what if….” It’s going to become a different play in their hands and that’s always the most exciting thing for me. We approach our work in such isolation, and then when we can finally start collaborating again, it’s really exciting. Erika: What do you hope the audience will take home from the production? Richie: To me, at the heart of this story is just love. We have such an absence of it. People who claim to be tolerant, people who claim to be loving and accepting…I think sometimes just aren’t. There’s no character in this play that’s demanding any more respect or tolerance or acceptance than anybody deserves. So, if somebody were to watch this play and go home and think “Man, I really wish I were a better person, what can I do to do that?” I think that would make this a success. Shawn: I’ll reckon that. Cynthia: That’s beautiful. Thank you, you guys. For the full transcript of the interview, visit saltlakeactingcompany.org.

Green Room Gallery The SLAC Green Room Gallery is a collective endeavor between community and artists. This space allows us to offer a variety of diverse visual perspectives. In keeping with SLAC’s mission to nurture our local, creative community, we celebrate these reinforcements born between the visual and performing arts. Art Access has partnered with the George E. Wahlen Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center since 2012 to provide a series of veterans’ workshops focusing on the visual and literary arts. Each year they also hold an exhibit which showcases this work along with art submitted from a call for entries from veteran artists. These exhibits Memorial by Wayne Rivard provide patrons with diverse viewpoints on the veteran experience and the emotional aftermath of combat, among other experiences, as well as facilitate dialogue with arts professionals, veteran peers, and the broader community. Like all artists, veterans use art to tell their stories by celebrating people and things that are important to them, processing the emotions of life, and sharing their perspectives on the world. Art Access is a local arts organization committed to providing equal opportunities to inclusive arts programming for Utahns with disabilities and those with limited access to the arts. A community-focused organization, Art Access strives to demonstrate that the arts are a universal vehicle for drawing out our similarities, celebrating our differences, and ultimately connecting us to each other. Through its philosophy of inclusion, Art Access serves people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities. accessart.org

The Painful Truth Pain is an unbidden guest, humanity’s shadow companion down through the ages. It is a despoiler of dreams and a thief. Chronic pain can appear suddenly in a person’s life, changing it forever. Dr. Lynn R. Webster puts a face on chronic pain through the lives of his patients, and provides an intimate view of what it is like to live with it. The Painful Truth will open your eyes to the world of those who are stigmatized and marginalized by our society and healthcare system. Yet the new book offers hope and a path forward for those willing to engage in a crusade against the human race’s primal enemy—pain.

“This remarkable book will change the way this country thinks about pain, pain management, and those who struggle with pain every day. Dr. Webster uses true stories and his vast experience to remind us why pain is a reality that cannot be ignored.” —Paul Gileno, founder and president, U.S. Pain Foundation
