Welcome Thank you for joining us for TRIBES by Nina Raine, the second production of SLAC’s 45th Season: in flight. When producing a brave, new play like TRIBES, it’s not uncommon to find yourself transformed; changed for the better. Throughout this discovery process, we examined the ways in which we communicate: vocally, with gesture, with silence. We noticed how those who can hear, so easily don’t. We listened to our Deaf community. We found that to be Deaf is not a disability, it’s a culture. It was imperative to cast the role of Billy with either a Deaf or Hard-ofHearing actor to achieve the level of authenticity that this play requires. Salt Lake Acting Company has the pleasure of welcoming and working with Stephen Drabicki, a Hard-of-Hearing actor from New York City who has played Billy in many theaters across North America. “Salt Lake Acting Company has welcomed me with open arms and has shown me what a tight-knit, professional, yet enjoyable group they are. Their resolve to cast authentically serves the play and its intent, and it is great to see theatre practitioners going out of their way to hire interpreters and seek to include the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing in their work, both onstage and off.” – Stephen Drabicki (Billy) It has been wonderful getting to know Stephen. He has taught us more than just basic sign (though that has been very useful and fun to learn); he has expanded our knowledge of the Deaf culture and he has helped us more fully engage in our communication with each other. It’s not just talking and listening – it’s giving full attention, maintaining eye contact, emotionally engaging and truly hearing one another. Producing TRIBES has been a beautiful lesson in the importance of listening to people and giving everyone a voice. This play is a perfect example of the power of theatre and why art matters. Thank you for being here, -Cynthia Fleming, Executive Artistic Director

Green Room Gallery The SLAC Green Room Gallery is a collective endeavor between community and artists. This space allows us to offer a variety of diverse visual perspectives. In keeping with SLAC’s mission to nurture our local, creative community, we celebrate these reinforcements born between the visual and performing arts. During the run of TRIBES, Art Access is pleased to present the work of Benjamin Davis, Jennifer Deily and Dawn Oughton, all of whom depict the world from their own perspectives. Benjamin’s paintings range from fantasy to landscapes; Jennifer is fascinated with animals and wildlife and the way we can experience them through art, myths and stories; and Dawn is a performance artist as well as a painter. All three artists identify as deaf or hard of hearing, but do not necessarily address deaf culture in their art. SLAC is also excited to contribute some pieces by actor Stephen Drabicki who is playing the role of Billy in TRIBES. These inspiring pieces will join the What’s My Name? exhibit which was assembled for BLACKBERRY WINTER. ART DOG December 4th–23rd, 2015 Adapted for stage by John Olive, with music composed by Susan Ennis Based on the book by Thacher Hurd Arthur Dog is a mild-mannered museum guard, but by night his alter ego, Art Dog, is a mysterious artist who makes the city his canvas. When Leonardo Dog Vinci’s Mona Woofa goes missing from the Dogopolis Museum of Art, Art Dog is a prime suspect. His search for the perpetrators takes him on a brightly colored, action packed romp through the city in which the only remaining mystery, at the end of the play, is Art Dog’s true identity.

Director: Penny Caywood Cast: Alexis Baigue, Jaten Lee McGriff, Jenessa Bowen, Olivia Custodio.

The Painful Truth Pain is an unbidden guest, humanity’s shadow companion down through the ages. It is a despoiler of dreams and a thief. Chronic pain can appear suddenly in a person’s life, changing it forever. Dr. Lynn R. Webster puts a face on chronic pain through the lives of his patients, and provides an intimate view of what it is like to live with it. The Painful Truth will open your eyes to the world of those who are stigmatized and marginalized by our society and healthcare system. Yet the new book offers hope and a path forward for those willing to engage in a crusade against the human race’s primal enemy—pain.

“This remarkable book will change the way this country thinks about pain, pain management, and those who struggle with pain every day. Dr. Webster uses true stories and his vast experience to remind us why pain is a reality that cannot be ignored.” —Paul Gileno, founder and president, U.S. Pain Foundation
