Welcome

WHO’S WHO

S

alt Lake Acting Company is welcoming 2015 with a World Premiere production, two new play readings, a workshop, a national call for emerging playwright submissions, auditions for our annual World Premiere musical, and our inaugural playwrights’ lab. What a gorgeous way to start the New Year – deepening our commitment to developing, nurturing, and championing new plays and the artists that bring them to life. A marvelous contribution to the American Theatre. We are thrilled to premiere TWO STORIES by Salt Lake City’s own Elaine Jarvik. This play was read in our New Play Sounding Series last season and received funding from NEA Art Works. The NEA was impressed with TWO STORIES for reflecting America’s changing demographics and was pleased at the prospect of our community panel discussion, bringing in scholars and experts to talk about issues raised in the play. Don’t miss this panel: Living/Losing the American Dream, February 15th at 2:30pm. We presented a free reading of five one-act plays by Tony Kushner – TINY KUSHNER. This was in conjunction with the Tanner Humanities Center who brought Tony Kushner to Utah for a 3-day residency and public lecture at Kingsbury Hall. Only fitting for SLAC to read a new play of Tony’s since we were one of the first to produce his iconic play ANGELS IN AMERICA, Parts One and Two. Playwright William Missouri Downs is a familiar presence at SLAC. We produced his soldout EXIT INTERVIEW in 2013 and later this season will open the World Premiere of MR. PERFECT. In January, we held a two-day workshop in which Mr. Downs and the cast finetuned this play for nonstop fun in April. Our New Play Sounding Series will present a free reading of another play of Bill’s, HOW TO STEAL A PICASSO on February 16th at 7:00pm. We are honored to partner with the David Ross Fetzer Foundation for Emerging Artists to offer a grant that will provide a young playwright a week-long opportunity to develop a new script with a professional director and cast, culminating in a public reading on SLAC’s stage. The submission deadline was January 15th and we received an astounding 50 submissions. We will announce the winner April 1st. A standing O to Betsy Ross, David’s amazing mother, for creating this foundation to honor the life of David and help kick-start many young artists’ careers. Every year SLAC presents the World Premiere musical SATURDAY’S VOYEUR by Allen Nevins and Nancy Borgenicht. We recently held auditions and cast the best of the best for your summer party and play. Can’t wait!

There are not enough words to express how excited we are for the first-annual Salt Lake Acting Company Playwrights’ Lab with David Kranes leading the way. This program is all about the playwright. SLAC is giving them the opportunity to write the best possible version of their play. With amazing collaborators – directors, dramaturgs, actors, a story teller, an improv artist, a music specialist, a movement specialist, and a visual artist – there will be an endless supply of inspiration. Thank you for joining us in celebration of new work! Cynthia and Keven Executive Producers

TWO STORIES

In The Room With

Playwright Elaine Jarvik

The idea for “Two Stories” began years ago when I lived down a dirt lane lined with wild currant bushes and scrub oak. I had already lived there for nearly 20 years when, one spring, I discovered that a new neighbor, closer to the main road, planned to cut down some of the bushes and trees and install a fake-stone wall. In the name of aesthetics (mine) I tried to talk him out of it. When he proceeded, I took my own small revenge. I put rocks in his mailbox. Later I moved to a different neighborhood, where once again I fell in love with my own house and the view out my window. Later still I became fascinated by all the Salt Lake stories about “monster homes” and neighborhood disputes over property and taste. Everywhere I turned, it seemed, I discovered people at odds with their neighbors over additions and remodels and “scrape offs.” And all that time, while I was thinking about houses — and thinking about how the disputes over them are neighborhood versions of wars over land and ideology — I was also a journalist. So I was also thinking about the push-pull of what journalists do. We give a voice to people without a voice, and we try our best to tell people’s stories accurately and fairly. But: we also intrude on people’s privacy; we mine the details of their lives; we convince them that it’s in their best interest to talk to us. And, of course, I witnessed first-hand the digital evolution of journalism: the continuing urgency of the 24-hour news cycle, the “search engine optimization,” the massive layoffs. So, this is a play about all that. About what is mine and what is yours, and what happens when well-meaning people try to protect what they think they own.

Salt Lake Acting Company is saying yes to a program that will bring artists from all over the country to Salt Lake City to collaborate and create new theatre. The Salt Lake Acting Company Playwrights’ Lab will be run by David Kranes, and modeled after the Sundance Theatre Lab, which he founded and led for 14 years. A laboratory setting is a rare and valuable gift to playwrights. New plays in their earliest stages need time, space, and artistic support. By removing the pressures that come along with production – marketing decisions, tickets sales, audience and press response –playwrights are able to focus solely on the work. Within this program, all of SLAC’s resources are entirely dedicated to the artists. The inaugural Playwrights’ Lab at SLAC will run February 23rd - 27th, 2015 and will focus on the work of playwrights Kathleen Cahill and Jon Tuttle. “There is literally nothing more valuable to a playwright than a workshop. It is a rare chance to work on a play the way a baker works on a loaf of bread — to knead it into shape, to give it time and space to rise.” - Kathleen Cahill (Charm, The Persian Quarter, Course 86B in the Catalogue) “Rare enough are opportunities to work without distraction on a new play. But to collaborate with David Kranes and the committed professionals at SLAC is the fulfillment of dreams I’ve never stopped having.” - Jon Tuttle (Drift, Sonata for Armadillos, The White Problem) The company for Salt Lake Acting Company’s inaugural Playwrights’ Lab includes: Directors Tamilla Woodard and Robin Wilks Dunn Dramaturgs Erik Ramsey and Martine Green-Rogers Resource Artists Charlotte Boye-Christensen, Bill Harley (storyteller), Kenny Raskin (improv artist), Richard Rice (musicologist), and Shannon Robert (visual artist) Actors Austin Archer, Colleen Baum, Daniel Beecher, Toni Byrd, Tony Campisi, Nicole Cardoni, April Fossen, Will Manning, Topher Rasmussen, Breean Taylor, and Joleen Wilkinson

The Green Room Gallery Our Green Room Gallery is a collective endeavor between community and artists. This space allows us to offer a variety of diverse visual perspectives from local artists. In keeping with SLAC’s mission to nurture our local, creative community, we celebrate these reinforcements born between the visual and performing arts. All sales go directly to the exhibiting artist. During the run of TWO STORIES we are pleased to present the work of Katrina Berg. Katrina lives and creates in Midway, Utah with her husband, 4 sons (including baby twins), and daughter. She holds degrees in Early Childhood Education from Brigham Young University and Landscape Architecture from UNLV. After spending summers studying French in Paris, and later Architecture in Torino, Italy, she found she could not leave her paints alone. Her work is found in private collections across the United States, Canada, Mexico, Israel, and Europe. Katrina uses paint as a means of preservation. This pictorial form of conservation acts as a record of a place, time, and feeling. Her work presenting homes and architecture not only offer physical descriptions, but also encapsulates the nostalgia of the American dream. As the architectural landscape of our cities and the cultural zeitgeist of our societies evolves scenes such as those depicted by Katrina find their place in the realm of the historical, rather than the current day to day. The American dream that once consisted of the small little house with the white picket fence has evolved, and is now diverse and individualized. TWO STORIES reflects America’s changing demographics, and different versions of the American Dream are reflected through the changing architectural landscape of a neighborhood. Questions of neighborhood preservation are raised, and the American dream is examined.

University Professional Theatre Program SLAC is delighted to partner with local universities to heighten theatre students’ educational experience by taking them out of the classroom and hiring them at a professional theatre. During TWO STORIES we are thrilled to have a Theatre Design Student at SLAC. We would like to welcome Weber State University Student Misha Wulfe as part of the University Professional Theatre Program. “In an industry like theatre hands-on experience is as important as time spent in the class room. Working with the talented professionals at SLAC helps to give me the skills and inspiration I need as I launch my own career. The UPTP has been an awesome chance to work in a fun environment while improving my abilities. My thanks to the creative team at SLAC!” -Misha Wulfe | Weber State University Sponsors: The John & Marcia Price Family Foundation, Terence K. Stephens, Marian Jacobsen, and Zelie Pforzheimer.
