WELCOME Welcome to You Will Get Sick by Noah Diaz, a fantastical way to start our new year. One of the perks of my job is being in the room where all the magic happens. The room is electric, with ideas bouncing off walls, and crePhoto by Laura Chapman Courtesy of Salt Lake Acting Company ativity is abundantly flowing. Whether we’re problem-solving or watching a run-through of the play, I have a front-row seat experiencing artistic brilliance. I love my job. I want to give you an inside look into the minds of our creative team. Enjoy! “Directing this production has been a total joy. It’s unique combination of theatrical imagination, non-linear story-telling, and it’s intuitive, embodied logic that brims with an authentic human reality, has been a gift. I believe the theatre reveals our collective humanity in ways that no other art from quite does. Collaborating on this play, with this brilliant company of artists and staff, inspires me in our collective celebration of both the chaos and beauty of what it means to be human.” ~Chris DuVal, Director “The opportunity to create highly stylized moments with actors is one of the things I loved most about working on this production. By playing with speeds and tempos, big character choices, and levels and shapes, all of which feel out of the norm, I think we were able to lift up the surrealism and levity gifted to us by the playwright.” ~Cassandra Stokes-Wylie, Assistant Director “Designing YWGS was a delight, and supporting its surreal but relatable storytelling provided an opportunity for me to branch out from the realistic settings I am used to. Where at first you see things in black and white, a second glance shows all the gray that goes in between. This set needed to be neutral enough to handle rapid scene changes without interrupting the flow. It needed to be a nebulous everyman space but also eerily specific. Symbolic, but not so far from reality that it becomes distancing. Ultimately it is one person’s story, but it is all of our story.” ~Dennis Hassan, Set Designer “I try to light the emotional space in which the show exists. Less important on this show is what time of day, or where we are physically, what season, etc. Although those questions always do inform design choices, this script in particular, I think, asks us what the characters and ultimately, we as audience are feeling. Where are we emotionally, spiritually? Is it memory? is it the last look back at the end of life? Who is driving each scene, the sick person, the caregiver, an outsider? We have concentrated on a fractured feel and look. Multiple characters existing in different times and places together, again emotional spaces as well as physical. Ultimately for me, the script feels full of warmth, hope, and acceptance. The lighting needs to support that.” ~Michael Horesji, Light Designer Thank you for joining us. With love and gratitude, Cynthia – Executive Artistic Director

This production’s PTP candidate is Melanie Varela, Assistant Set Designer. “Being part of this team, working on a show that touches on a topic so natural and intrinsic to human beings in contrast to comedy, has been a great experience because it has allowed me to see how theatre can be developed and displayed in a sensitive and responsible way, while still being fun, very funny and creative.” - Melanie Valera

MEET SEONJAE KIM Director of Bald Sisters by Vichet Chum At SLAC April 10 - May 5, 2024 Hi there! My name is Seonjae (she/her) and I am a director, writer, and translator based in NYC. My name is pronounced like sun in the sky + letter J. I am originally from Seoul, South Korea, and started doing theatre because I had trouble making friends. I’m fascinated by the capacity of theatre to create worlds onstage that draw from, yet transcend, our boundaries of language and culture. I love any kind of project that feels relevant and from the heart, but I am particularly passionate about: ensemble work, adaptations (especially Greek tragedy), themes of sexuality/intimacy, things that require athleticism and virtuosity from the actors. In addition, I’m committed to practicing and continually learning more about leading collaborative, equitable, rewarding processes for all. Also, I’m a Scorpio, ENFP, gym rat, Swiftie, above-average cook, Carrie, and cat person, and would be thrilled to discuss any of those things.

Coming Next at SLAC Bald Sisters By Vichet Chum REGIONAL PREMIERE April 10 - May 5, 2024 Join us for this moving, funny, and powerful family story that pits sister against sister, old against new, right against ritual, and prayer against...karaoke.

SLAC’s Summer Show WORLD PREMIERE June 26 - August 18, 2024 Annual summer fun returns to SLAC! What’s in store? Only the stranger-than-fiction news cycle will tell. One thing is sure - laughter and celebration will once again take center stage.
