NOTES FROM ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Tuacahn’s 2024 season is fresh, new
Looking around at this amazing Tuacahn Amphitheatre and knowing the stunning scope of each of this season’s productions, it seems impossible to encapsulate 2024 into a single word; but if I had to, the word would be NEW.
All new!
We couldn’t be more excited about this year’s fresh lineup featuring Disney’s Frozen, Anastasia and Jersey Boys: The Story of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons in the Outdoor Amphitheatre and Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash and A Christmas Carol, The Musical in the Indoor Hafen Theatre, none of which have ever been seen on the Tuacahn stages.
Not only that, we’re reaching new heights for box office numbers, new levels of creativity and design, and offering new seating options — with even more seats available, and more with comfortable padding! The list of fresh, innovative happenings at Tuacahn goes on and on.
Thankfully, however, not everything is completely new. For example, we are thrilled to welcome back some of the directors and creative teams that have previously helped us transport audiences into a world beyond their imaginations. And we are continuing the high level of excellence audiences have come to expect here in the canyon, with seasoned Tuacahn veterans and those who are new to the Tuacahn family all working side-by-side to create a season that truly offers something for everyone.
From Disney princesses and Russian royalty to renowned musicians and a Christmas classic that has stood the test of time, the all-new 2024 Tuacahn season is shaping up to be nothing short of spectacular!
Sincerely,
Scott S. Anderson Producing Artistic Director

Founded in 1991, Tuacahn Center for the Arts is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization that is nestled at the base of Padre Canyon, surrounded by red sandstone cliffs that rise thousands of feet into the beautiful blue southern Utah sky.
MISSION: Tuacahn edifies and inspires the human spirit through professional world-class family entertainment and an unparalleled artistic and educational experience that matches the majesty of our canyon.
Known best for its professional theatre, Tuacahn attracts the most talented actors in America. Each year, thousands of applicants audition from New York City to Los Angeles. Tuacahn productions include members of Actors’ Equity Association, the union for professional actors and stage managers, many of whom have appeared on Broadway or in other nationally recognized venues.
As a community asset, Tuacahn entertains more than 350,000 patrons each year, with musicals, concerts, shopping, food, and other special events. Tuacahn is Utah’s largest professional non-profit theatre and acts as an economic engine generating an annual impact of more than $110 million. Visitors stay in hotels, dine at restaurants, and shop at retail outlets while enjoying recreational activities in one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

WHO’S WHO BEHIND THE SCENES
PEGGY HICKEY In 2023, our hearts were broken when we lost a beloved and cherished member of our Tuacahn family. The delightful Peggy Hickey burst onto the Tuacahn scene as Director/Choreographer for the Indoor Hafen Theatre production of the Tony Award winning musical, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder. Peggy brought Broadway to Southern Utah with this top notch production that was perfect in each and every detail. Audiences were thoroughly entertained and impressed as she set the bar for excellence for our indoor productions. Peggy returned that winter to direct Elf, The Musical which became our bestselling Christmas show at the time. In the amphitheatre, Peggy choreographed Tuacahn’s epic production of The Count of Monte Cristo and the electric and heartwarming School of Rock Peggy’s final show at Tuacahn was director of the enchanting Disney classic, Mary Poppins. Peggy began her career after graduating from Sacramento State University, working extensively as a dancer/singer at regional theaters across the country and then advancing quickly to Choreographer and Director. Peggy was an extremely versatile and gifted choreographer working not just in theatre but also in film, television, opera and video. Her choreography was seen at Goodspeed, Lincoln Center, the Chatalet in Paris, Papermill, Old Globe, Sacramento Music Circus, Seattle 5th Ave, Santa Fe Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Washington Opera, NY City Opera, and Seattle Opera for which she garnered many awards and accolades.
For television and film, Peggy choreographed The Brady Bunch Movie, Beck’s New Pollution (MTV Award for Choreography), Samantha Who, General Hospital, Days of Our Lives, 90210, and Kennedy Center Presents “Die Fledermaus” on PBS.
Peggy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 and with Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer in 2016. Despite these devastating medical conditions, Peggy achieved her greatest professional success during this period choreographing the Broadway hits, A Gentleman’s Guide To Love and Murder (2014 Tony Award for Best New Musical, Outer Critics
and Astaire nominee for Best Choreography) and Anastasia (opened in 2017 and ran for 842-performances). Tuacahn is proud to present the regional premier of Anastasia, especially knowing that Peggy helped craft this wonderful story of home, love and family
In addition to her talent and success, Peggy will be remembered for the love and pure joy that she brought to her craft. Peggy truly loved people and actively nurtured her relationships. Although her she is no longer with us, her light will continually shine at Tuacahn through the lives she has touched. The Tuacahn family would like to offer our sincerest condolences to her family who were the loves of her life: husband, Tony Perez and daughters, Molly and Gabriella.
Donations in Peggy’s memory can be made to the Peggy Hickey Memorial Scholarship in Musical Theater on behalf of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television where Peggy was a beloved professor for over 20-years, teaching dance. She loved her students and instilled in them a love and joy of the craft, in addition to providing a solid foundation of technical expertise and hard work. Your gift will help promote the next generation of performance artists and serve as a beautiful tribute to Peggy and her huge, but far too short life.

MARSHALL BRICKMAN (Book - Jersey Boys) Marshall Brickman, born in Brazil of American parents, attended New York public schools and the University of Wisconsin, where he received a double baccalaureate in both science and music. He entered show business first as a member of the folk group The Tarriers and then, along with John and Michelle Phillips, as one of The New Journeymen, a precursor of The Mamas and the Papas, whose flamboyant life-style and eccentric harmonies defined the post-folk era of tuning up, turning on and cashing in. Trading in his Gibson Mastertone 5-string banjo for an IBM Selectric, he secured a position as writer/director on Candid Camera, America’s original reality show, a wildly successful early experiment in monetizing public humiliation, for which he hereby apologizes. Fleeing Candid Camera, Brickman found solace as head writer for Johnny Carson, whose late-night show on NBC emanated from ironically named Radio City in midtown Manhattan, a stroke of luck that
allowed him to stay as far from Los Angles as possible while still retaining U.S. citizenship. In 1970 he left NBC to become producer/head writer of Dick Cavett’s late-night show on ABC. Among the many ground-breaking events that Cavett introduced into the late-night formula was the night presidential hopeful George McGovern was interviewed by lastminute guest host Bill Russell of the Boston Celtics. The result was fascinating, not unlike watching a python ingesting a small cow. In the meantime he had started a collaboration with Woody Allen, a young comic who opened for the Tarriers at Fred Weintraub’s Bitter End, the legendary Bleeker Street coffee house that provided exposure to upcoming talent in music and comedy. They worked at odd hours on screenplays and material for Allen’s early TV appearances, an experience like no other. Brickman watched Mr. Allen negotiate both the creative and practical issues confronting an artist working in a commercial environment; he learned things that can’t be taught and never laughed as hard as the time spent roaming the city with a certified genius discussing art, politics, women, the state of the business, and why Durwood Kirby was considered funny, even by people with college degrees. Mr. Brickman’s film work as author (or co-author with Woody Allen) includes Sleeper, Annie Hall (Academy Award), Manhattan, (AA nomination) and Manhattan Murder Mystery. As film writer/director): Simon, Lovesick, The Manhattan Project, Sister Mary Explains it All. In television: The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson (head writer, 1967-’70); The Dick Cavett Show (head writer/co-producer, 1970-’72). Brickman’s recording (with ex-Tarrier Eric Weissberg) of the soundtrack of Deliverance, released in 1970, contained the surprise hit “Dueling Banjos,” achieved platinum status, and remains a healthy seller over 40 years later. His first foray into musical theater resulted in Jersey Boys, which won the Tony, Olivier, Helpmann, Grammy and many other awards worldwide, is in its twelfth year on Broadway, has been seen by twenty million people worldwide and is currently the 10th-longest running show in the history of Broadway. The film version of the show was directed by Clint Eastwood. Mr. Brickman’s other theatrical efforts include “Turn of the Century,” which played to capacity houses in Chicago, and “The Addams Family,” starring Nathan Lane
WHO’S WHO BEHIND THE SCENES
and Bebe Neuwirth, which ran for two years on Broadway and to date has had over four thousand first and second tier productions internationally. In addition to his work in film and theater, Mr. Brickman has published in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Playboy and other periodicals. He is the 2006 recipient of the Writers’ Guild of America Ian McClellan Hunter Award for Lifetime Achievement. His current project is a stage musical celebrating the life of western star Roy Rogers, scheduled to premiere late in 2017. After over 40 years in the business, trying to balance talent with opportunity and watching the careers of colleagues, both successful and less so, he can reduce what he’s learned into one succinct bit of wisdom: above all, it’s important to be lucky.
RICK ELICE (Book - Jersey Boys) co-wrote Jersey Boys (winner 2006 Tony Award, 2007 Grammy Award and 2009 Olivier Award for Best Musical) with the great Marshall Brickman; The Addams Family; Peter and the Starcatcher (winner of five 2012 Tony Awards); and The Cher Show (currently on tour in the UK). In the pipeline: The Princess Bride for Disney; Smash for Robert Greenblatt, Neil Meron and Steven Spielberg, music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, directed by Susan Stroman. Rick is also adapting Sara Gruen’s novel Water for Elephants; the popular film, Silver Linings Playbook; and writing an original musical, Treasure, with 2021 Ed Kleban Award-winner Benjamin Scheuer. Rick’s book, FINDING ROGER, AN IMPROBABLY THEATRICAL LOVE STORY, is published by Kingswell. Heartfelt thanks to those whose theatre work makes him grateful for the day he was born: Sondheim, Stoppard, Bennett, Prince, Fosse, Robbins, Nichols, Nunn, Laurents, Stone, Taymor, Papp, Schumacher, Schneider, David, Strong, Gaudio, Valli, McAnuff, Trujillo, Timbers, Coyne, Brickman, and, eternally, Roger Rees. Rick thinks about them a lot. He never thought about Jersey much. He does now.
BOB GAUDIO (Music - Jersey Boys) wrote his first hit, “Who Wears Short Shorts,” at 15, for the Royal Teens, and then went on to become a founding member of the Four Seasons and the band’s principal songwriter. He also produced the hit “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” for Neil Diamond and Barbra Streisand (Grammy
nomination, Record of the Year) as well as six albums for Diamond, including The Jazz Singer. Other producing credits include albums for Frank Sinatra, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and the soundtrack for the film Little Shop of Horrors. Several songs co-written with Bob Crewe have been cover hits for such artists as the Tremeloes (“Silence is Golden”), the Walker Brothers (“The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore”) and Lauryn Hill (“Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”). With his wife, Judy Parker, Gaudio produced and co-wrote the Who Loves You album for the Four Seasons and one of Billboard’s longest-charted singles (54 weeks), “Oh, What a Night.” A high point in his career came in 1990 when, as a member of the original Four Seasons, Gaudio was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1995, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, which hailed him as “a quintessential music-maker.” To this day, Bob Gaudio and Frankie Valli still maintain their partnership… on a handshake.
BOB CREWE (Lyrics - Jersey Boys) “New York was pregnant in the fifties,” says Bob Crewe, “gestating with possibilities.” Crewe and music partner Frank Slay became independent writerproducers when the category hadn’t yet been invented. In 1957 they wrote and produced “Silhouettes” for The Rays, which skyrocketed to #1. Suddenly, producers in demand, they launched Freddie Cannon’s “Tallahassee Lassie” and Billy & Lillie’s “Lah Dee Da.” Crewe’s 1960’s unprecedented producing success with The Four Seasons birthed a new sound, striking a major chord in American pop. “Sherry, “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Candy Girl,” “Ronnie” –all smashes! When lead Frankie Valli demanded a solo turn, Crewe and Bob Gaudio wrote (and Crewe produced) ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” which eventually became the century’s fifth most-played song. Crewe ran hot with artists from Vicki Carr, Oliver and Lesly Gore to Mitch Ryder, co-writing with Charles Fox the soundtrack for Jane Fonda’s film, “Barbarella.” Then his own Bob Crewe Generation exploded with Music to Watch Girls By. In 1972 Bob was in L.A., where he revived Frankie Valli with “My Eyes Adored You” by Crewe and Kenny Nolan. They also co-wrote Patti LaBelle’s “Lady Marmalade” (#1, July ’75), which was a hit again on the soundtrack of Moulin Rouge (#1, June ’01)…David Ritz.

ABOUT TUACAHN
OUR STORY
By Lisa Larson
Sitting with a view of the majestic present-day Tuacahn Amphitheatre, it’s hard to imagine its primitive beginning. Yet just as this natural amphitheatre was shaped by centuries of scorching heat and desert rain, so too has the history and future of Tuacahn Center for the Arts been molded by winds of change and the shaping power of dreams.
Built on the shoulders of Orval Hafen (the original owner of Padre Canyon) as well as the unparalleled drive and ambition of Doug Stewart and Hyrum W. Smith, a seemingly impossible dream blossomed into the reality that exists today. Tuacahn owes its success to the hard work and sacrifice of an ensemble cast who each played an integral role in the history of this magnificent place. It was 1995 when Tuacahn’s debut performance of Utah! danced its way out of the red rocks and into the hearts of the people of southern Utah. After four years telling the complex story of the area’s
ancient inhabitants and pioneer settlers, it became increasingly clear Tuacahn needed to shift its strategy.
“We’re proud of what we accomplished with Utah!,” says Kevin Smith, Tuacahn CEO. “But after several years of one show it was clear that people wanted to see something new.” The answer came in 1999 in the form of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Tuacahn found itself in the enviable position of huge crowds and sold out houses and Broadway in the Canyon was born.
Since that time, Tuacahn has produced more than 60 Broadway shows, taking full advantage of the theater’s outdoor space and making talent, directorial and technical strides year after year.
Among the many pivotal moments in Tuacahn’s history, hiring Scott Anderson as the artistic director in 2005 proved to be critical. Anderson’s enthusiasm and ability
ABOUT TUACAHN AMPHITHEATRE
to cast a wider audition net — including more contracts with Actors Equity League of Regional Theaters — and pushing outside the box in terms of what people thought Tuacahn could produce, yielded some very prosperous results.
Tuacahn’s 2008 success as one of the first regional theaters to be granted the professional rights to produce Les Misérables put Tuacahn on the map in a whole new way. The show’s success made it possible to forge several key relationships, the first licensed regional theater outside of Broadway to produce Disney’s Tarzan. Subsequent licensing agreements with Disney to produce The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, When You Wish and more continued to increase Tuacahn’s reputation as a regional theatrical force.
“We took a bit of a risk to elevate our production quality,” Anderson says. “We really put our reputation on the line and invested more than we ever had, and it paid off.”
SATURDAY MARKET
Celebrating the arts in another way,
Tuacahn’s Saturday Market features a wide range of local artists, crafts, food and entertainment, mingled with the natural beauty of Tuacahn’s unique setting.
“It’s all part of an overall commitment to the community and the arts are a big part of that community,” Smith says.
Tuacahn’s Saturday Market happens each Saturday year-round, weather permitting.
LOOKING AHEAD
Thanks to the past and future generosity of Tuacahn’s sponsors and patrons, the creative potential for future seasons knows no bounds. With the last 28 seasons serving as a guide, Tuacahn is excited at the prospect of taking regional theater to even greater heights in the future.
