F ROM T H E A RT I S T IC DI R E CTOR

Welcome and thank you for joining us! Swan Lake is synonymous with ballet. The mere mention of it conjures up images of elegant ballerinas, chivalrous princes, and that sublime heart-wrenching music by Tchaikovsky. Originally premiered in 1877 by the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow and then revised in 1895 by the Maryinsky Ballet in St. Petersburg, Russia, it has been recreated and re-envisioned countless times. Our founder, Willam Christensen created the first full-length American production of Swan Lake in 1940 when he was the Artistic Director of the San Francisco Ballet. The role of the prince was performed by his brother Lew. “Mr. C’s” version of Swan Lake pre-dates his world famous version of The Nutcracker. In fact, all of Ballet West’s Artistic Directors have presented their own versions of Swan Lake that have been at once faithful to the 1895 concept by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov -- and unique unto themselves. My first foray into re-staging any of the great classics was for Ballet West with Swan Lake in 2010. It was a daunting project, one that I did not feel worthy of at first. I studied tirelessly and read and watched everything I could about the ballet. What I found at the end of that exploration was ultimately – simplicity, the simple truth and humanity of the characters in this melodramatic fairy tale. That simplicity became my key to Swan Lake’s heart; the key to its timeless appeal; and ultimately the key to all the renowned classics that I have reproduced. I realized that what bridged the gap between simple presentation and its profound meaning was to embrace the exaggerated reality of the ballet and present it with absolute honesty. This may seem like an obvious approach but when you consider it – in the case of Swan Lake – that’s asking a lot. It requires our lead ballerina to embody both the plight of the human and the curse of the supernatural; our lead man to recognize that he does not want to marry a real woman, but instead commit his love and his life to a half woman/half Swan creature; and that a cast of over 50 dancers is responsible with evoking all aspects of this world, one starts to realize the magnitude of this endeavor. But that is exactly what our artists do. With original choreography by our Principal Ballet Mistress Pamela Robinson-Harris and our late Ballet Master Mark Goldweber Swan Lake has come alive through the work of our dancers, our entire artistic, costume and production teams and by the exquisite playing of our Ballet West Orchestra. Hopefully what you will see on stage is the deep humanity behind the melodrama, the yearning for an illusion that leads to a higher truth, and how love is the only triumph of good over evil. Swan Lake is a fantasy. But it is also a very real tale that portrays the dilemma between accepting one’s fate and pushing for something different; the understanding of consequence; and ultimately the divinity that comes from doing the right thing. Thank You for your patronage. I hope you will immerse yourself in our fairy tale of Swan Lake!

F ROM TH E E X ECU TI V E DIR ECTOR

Welcome to Ballet West’s first production of 2015! From our productions to our events, both small and large, we had a wonderful 2014 capped by the ribbon-cutting of the state-of-theart Jessie Eccles Quinney Ballet Centre. While you’ll immediately recognize the expanded lobby, new concessions, and vastly improved restrooms, the other four floors contain scenery, costuming, ticketing, dance studios and administrative space. After years of planning and construction, this building is alive and vibrant. From the colorful undulating exterior at night, to the daytime creative buzz, our new home is a dynamic addition to the Utah arts community. It’s amazing to think, for the first time in Ballet West’s history, a production was rehearsed, costumed, and staged all under one roof. What a dream-realized to have all facets of our administrative and artistic power working cohesively in one building! It seems appropriate for our first production in this new building to be featuring one of the most iconic and quintessential ballets, Swan Lake. At 138 years old, it’s just as riveting, passionate, and powerful today as when Tchaikovsky first produced it. Ballet West is especially fond of Swan Lake as our founder, Willam Christensen was the first director to produce the full-length version of the ballet in the United States. As our talented artistic staff and artists eagerly endeavor to revitalize and magnificently portray this masterpiece, I am always awestruck by the tireless “behind the scenes” work from a passionate and enthusiastic team that ensures the success of each and every production. Whether it is a classical ballet, historical masterpiece, or new cutting-edge creation, Ballet West strives every day to bring you the highest caliber of talent and training. We hope you enjoy the show, and our new home, as much as we do. Sincerely,

Scott Altman Executive Director

T H E S TO RY PROLOGUE

The time is years before our story begins and the place is unknown. Young Princess Odette is playing quietly with her handmaidens and friends when a strange creature—half man, half bird of prey— appears at her window. He envelopes her in his wings and transforms her into a swan. ACT I

The royal grounds in front of the castle It is Prince Siegfried’s 21st birthday. His best friend, Benno von Summerstein, and Wolfgang, the Major Domo of the court, have organized a party. All the courtiers, young and old, have come together to celebrate. The Prince only half-heartedly partakes in the festivities. His mother, the Queen, arrives to wish him happy birthday. She presents him with the signet of her late husband the king and gives him the gift of a crossbow. The Queen reminds Siegfried that eligible princesses from around the world will be attending his birthday ball and that he will be required to choose a bride to ensure his future as monarch. This makes Prince Siegfried uneasy. Siegfried is a romantic who does not want any part of a political marriage nor does he welcome the responsibilities of the throne. As dusk falls, Wolfgang tells the story of an evil sorcerer who lives in the ruins by a lake. Filled with hate because he has never been loved, this evil bird creature abducts young women, transforms them into swans and holds them in his power. Only the true love of a human man can break the spell and free the women. At that moment, a flock of swans flies overhead. Prince Siegfried gathers Benno and some friends and goes off in search of them. ACT II

The Lake It is late and the moon is high when Siegfried and his friends arrive at the lake where the swans have alighted. The men take no notice of a strange owl who stares at them malevolently from his perch in the ruins by the lake. The owl is in fact the sorcerer, Baron von Rothbart, who is jealously guarding his domain. Prince Siegfried aims his crossbow at the flock. Suddenly one swan flies forward. He is fascinated and attempts to capture it. As the swan frantically tries to escape his grasp, she undergoes a startling transformation and—before his eyes—turns into the most beautiful woman Siegfried has ever seen. She tells him that her name is princess Odette and because of the spell cast on her years ago she must remain a swan by day only to become human by the light of the moon. She implores Siegfried and his men to spare these swans as they too are enchanted young women and she is their queen. As the men retreat, Odette disappears into the mists and Siegfried goes off in search of her. Confident with the success of his manipulation, the sorcerer swoops down from his perch and bids the swan maidens to dance for him. Siegfried finds the beautiful Swan Queen, and just as he is about to swear his everlasting love, the very words that will free her, the sorcerer pulls Odette away with his magic. As the dawn rises, Odette reverts to her bird form, forgetting Siegfried and leaving him in the mist.

T H E S TO RY ACT III

The great hall of the castle Royalty from around the world gather to celebrate Prince Siegfried’s birthday. The Queen is confident that her son will choose a bride, but as each princess is introduced, Siegfried is polite but uninterested. His thoughts are solely on Odette. Two strange guests appear unannounced. They are the mysterious Baron von Rothbart and his beautiful daughter, Odile. Odile looks identical to the Swan Queen, Odette, except that she is dressed in black and her manner is wickedly seductive. Believing that Odile is his beloved Odette, Siegfried takes her by the hand and leads her off. The Queen, equally enchanted by this exotic pair, instructs Wolfgang to commence the entertainment. The Matadors from Spain, the Neapolitan dancers from Italy, and the elegant lords and ladies from Hungary all perform until von Rothbart interrupts the action and introduces his daughter Odile once again. In front of everyone, she captures the heart of Prince Siegfried. The prince is certain that this woman is his beloved Odette. Photo by Luke Isley. Despite the disruption of a swan frantically beating its wings against the castle windows, he swears to Odile that he will love her forever. The Queen is delighted until von Rothbart triumphantly reveals himself to be the evil sorcerer. Everything was a ruse designed to get Siegfried to betray Odette. As von Rothbart and Odile depart in a burst of black magic, the prince is horror-stricken by his mistake. Benno tries to reason with his friend but to no avail. Siegfried runs from the castle, not knowing what to do, but knowing that he must set things right. ACT IV

The Lake The swans anxiously await the return of their queen, Odette, hopeful that she has saved them through the love of Prince Siegfried. When she arrives, she tells them of Siegfried’s betrayal. Now all is lost. Prince Siegfried rushes out of the mists. He has been running all night. The swans gather around their queen to protect her but she steps forward. Despite it all, she still loves him. Siegfried begs forgiveness and she grants it. In a fury, von Rothbart swoops down to separate the pair. Odette sees that her only escape is to take her own life. She runs off while Siegfried and the sorcerer battle. Taunted by von Rothbart, Siegfried realizes that he too must take his life. It is the only way to prove his true love and save the swan maidens. He runs after Odette, and the swan maidens heroically block von Rothbart. The lovers hurl themselves onto the rocks below, thus breaking the spell. The sorcerer melts into nothingness. As the sun dawns on a new day, young maidens appear out of the mists freed forever from the sorcerer’s evil magic. Odette and Siegfried are united eternally in heaven.

LEADERSHIP

Adam Sklute BALLET WEST ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

As Artistic Director of Ballet West, Adam Sklute has expanded the company’s repertoire and visibility with exciting company premieres, increased touring, heightened public exposure and greater focus on Ballet West Academy. Under Sklute’s leadership BW has toured extensively, appearing three times at Washington DC’s Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (2008 Ballet Across America – Serenade, and two week-long runs of The Nutcracker in 2012 and 2014); a 2013 engagement at Chicago’s famed Auditorium Theater with his The Sleeping Beauty and a mixed repertory program; twice at New York City Center’s Fall for Dance Festival (Les Biches, 2009; Grand Pas Paquita, 2012); and twice at the Chicago Dancing Festival (Serenade 2010; Sinfonietta 2011). In the past five years, the company has also appeared at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in 2011; The Laguna Dance Festival in 2010; Las Vegas with Nevada Ballet Theater in both 2010 (Sinfonietta) and 2012 (Jewels in collaboration with NBT and PNB); and Aspen, CO., New York, NY, Victoria, BC and Dallas, TX all during the 2014/15 season. In 2009, BW graced the cover of Dance Magazine for the first time in 25 years and again was on the cover in 2013. Since 2007, the company has garnered numerous reviews and articles in such publications as The New York Times, The Washington Post, Dance Magazine, Ballet Review, and Pointe to name a few. In 2012 and 2013 Ballet West was the subject of the BBC Worldwide Production’s docudrama television series Breaking Pointe which aired on The CW channel. Sklute has introduced BW to renowned, contemporary choreographers such as Nicolo Fonte, Jiri Kylián, Mark Morris, and Twyla Tharp, among others, while expanding the company’s Balanchine repertoire and adding early 20th century Diaghilev-era masterpieces. In addition to reintroducing lost elements of Christensen’s production of The Nutcracker and reconstructing his The Firebird, Sklute conceived and produced new versions of Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty and Giselle. He developed BW’s wildly successful annual Family Series and Innovations programs . A native of Berkeley, California, Sklute began dancing at the age of 16. His early training was at the Oakland Ballet and San Francisco Ballet schools. After only two years of formal study he joined The Joffrey II Dancers (The Joffrey’s apprentice company). Two years later he was asked to join The Joffrey Ballet. Sklute was one of the last two artists personally chosen by Robert Joffrey. He danced with The Joffrey from 1985 to 2000 and then rose through the ranks to Associate Director in 2005. Sklute became Artistic Director of BW in 2007. He has extensive television and film credits and is an Adjunct Professor at The University of Utah and is an internationally sought after a teacher, lecturer, coach and judge for ballet worldwide.
