STEVEN BROSVIK President & CEO
BRIAN GREEFF Board of Trustees Chairman
On behalf of the musicians, board, and staff of Utah Symphony | Utah Opera, it is our pleasure to welcome you to Maurice Abravanel Hall and tonight’s concert. As we approach the conclusion of another spectacular winter season of artistic successes and incredible live music, we thank you for the energy you bring to our concerts, inspiring our musicians to create the very best music experiences with and for you.
We conclude this exceptional season of great live symphonic music with three programs, each including audience-favorite works led by world-class guest conductors and featuring extraordinary soloists with the incomparable musicians of our orchestra. Whether it is the evocative orchestration of Ravel, Prokofiev, RimskyKorsakov, and Copland; exciting new music from living composers; or virtuosic performances by Ingrid Fliter, Wendy Bryn Harmer, and Anne Akiko Meyers, you will hear the musicians of the Utah Symphony demonstrate their remarkable expertise as they deliver moments that will live long in your memory.
This summer we hope you will “Escape into the Music” with USUO for our 20th Deer Valley® Music Festival. The six-week summer concert series, which runs from July 5 through August 9, features a diverse musical lineup, showcasing the versatility of our Utah Symphony musicians as they perform music ranging from classical to alternative rock alongside popular artists. Also watch for the Utah Symphony as featured guests throughout the summer in outdoor community venues including the Sandy Amphitheater, Thanksgiving Point, and the Utah Cultural Celebration Center in West Valley City.
Thank you again for being part of tonight’s musical experience. Your presence matters and we look forward to seeing you outdoors this summer and once again in the marvelous setting of Maurice Abravanel Hall for our 2024-25 season! THE COMPOSER – POLINA NAZAYKINSKAYA (b. 1987) – “Each piece of music that I write comes from the depth of my heart,” says Russianborn composer Polina Nazaykinskaya, “from the inner ocean of emotions and possibilities that are carried by the waves of memories.” Nazaykinskaya focused early on music, showing aptitude as a toddler

THE COMPOSER – MAURICE RAVEL (1875–1937) – Ravel traveled to Oxford University in 1928 to receive an honorary doctorate. Awards of that sort were hardly rare for artists of Ravel’s caliber but, given his lack of recognition at home (and his refusal to accept it when it finally came),

Duration: 38 minutes.
THE COMPOSER – SERGE PROKOFIEV (1891–1953) – Prokofiev returned from a concert tour with his family to Soviet Moscow in the summer of 1936. It was always the plan, but one wonders whether he might have wanted to be elsewhere had he been present there a few months earlier, when the government made their

Her international awards and accomplishments since have been many, including the Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. “The writing of music is a divine act,” Nazaykinskaya believes, “…a meditative experience that opens the gates to the paradise lost and brings out the nostalgia for the infinite.”

the English gesture of appreciation was significant. But, in truth, Ravel was as impervious to foreign praise as domestic, and he probably didn’t give the British honor much credence after leaving London. Certainly, no more than he gave the rapturous American audiences from his tour there earlier in the same year. For Ravel, adoration and scorn were of equal value. Which is to say, not that much.

“expectations” of Soviet artists clear by way of a scathing critique of Dmitri Shostakovich. The Pravda review of the opera Lady MacBeth of Mtsensk scared everyone except Prokofiev, who was conveniently abroad at a time when communication about such things could be refracted by time, distance and translation. In any case, he missed it, and managed to steer well clear of it when he got home.

DELYANA LAZAROVA Conductor
Delyana Lazarova’s international musical education influences her wide-ranging repertoire. Born in Bulgaria, she has a natural affinity to Eastern European and Russian repertoire (Dvořák, Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, Bartók), but feels equally at home in the Viennese Classical period, influenced by her studies in Switzerland. Lazarova is passionate about music of the 20th and 21st centuries. Following her highly successful debut in
November 2022, she will lead two further projects with the ROCO chamber orchestra in Houston in February 2024, including a world premiere by Adam Schoenberg and works by Aaron Copland, Elfrida Andrée and Jessica Meyer. With Collegium Novum Zurich she will perform Romitelli’s “An Index of Metals”, and together with the Munich Chamber Orchestra she will dedicate herself to music by Chin, Shostakovich, Clyne and Ligeti. In autumn 2023 Lazarova’s first CD was released, recorded with the Hallé Orchestra and featuring works by Bulgarian composer Dobrinka Tabakova.
WENDY BRYN HARMER
Soprano
The Seattle Times heralded Wendy Bryn Harmer as “a standout Senta with a big, radiant voice” in her first performances of Der fliegende Holländer with Seattle Opera. In the 2023-24 season, she sings her first performances of Brünnhilde in Die Walküre with Atlanta Opera. She also returns to the Metropolitan Opera as Kitty Hart in the new production of Dead Man Walking, creates the role of Marilyn in Gregory Spears and Tracy K. Smith’s The
Righteous in her Santa Fe Opera debut, and sings Ravel’s Shéhérazade with the Utah Symphony. Future seasons see her debuts with the Staatsoper Hamburg and the Lyric Opera of Kansas City and a return to Santa Fe Opera. Last season, she returned to Utah Opera for further performances of her sought-after characterization of Senta in Der fliegende Höllander and sang Sieglinde in Die Walküre in concert with Michigan Opera Theater in addition to returning to the Metropolitan Opera roster for its productions of Lohengrin and Der fliegende Höllander.

THE COMPOSER – NIKOLAI RIMSKYKORSAKOV (1844–1908) – RimskyKorsakov had no opera projects in the queue during the 1887-88 season, so he was able to focus on orchestral composition. The three successive works he created during that time – Capriccio espangol, Op. 34, Russian Easter Overture,
she co-coordinated the British Music Information Centre’s The Cutting Edge program and has served as president of the Guildhall’s Contemporary Music Society. Great War and the list of regular attendees varied, as professionals and like-minded amateurs came and went over the years. The name Les Apaches was taken from the charismatic street gangs that emerged during the Belle Époque in Paris, and Ravel’s cohort probably saw themselves as non-violent brothers to these plucky outcasts. At the very least, their ranks included a few real characters too.

Op. 36 and Scheherazade, Op. 35 –would eventually bring him international symphonic fame, but Rimsky-Korsakov made no effort to capitalize on it. He was an opera man, through and through, and was already well on his way to falling under the spell of Richard Wagner. The trio of orchestral 1887/88 showpieces, however successful, would soon be part of a closed chapter for the composer.
