ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

W

elcome to the Grand Theatre’s backstage production of The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940! When a creative team assembles for a backer’s audition for a new musical, things turn deadly. Spoofing the murder mystery movies of the 1940’s, with one knotty plot twist after another, secret passageways, lurking shadows, and a setting where nothing is as it seems, you’ll be on the edge of your seat trying to figure out whodunit? One of my all-time favorite plays, this hilarious spoof is a great time for the entire family. I’d like to remind you to download the Grand App, free on the App Store and Google Play, to get special behind the scenes interviews with the cast and production staff. The App is also a convenient way to purchase tickets, stay current on what’s going on at the Grand, and be the first to know about all our auditions! Please make sure to join us in March for our American Classics Series, presenting Arthur Miller’s A View from the Bridge, and help us spread the word about the Grand Theatre and the professional quality productions at our community’s theatre! Thank you for joining us for this production, and enjoy the show! Seth Miller Artistic and Executive Director The Grand Theatre

A

WORD from

the

DIRECTOR

I

had a few religious rituals growing up. Some involved butts in pews on Sundays; others were centered around more quiet times at home, particularly the whodunnit. Few days passed by without a viewing of Hitchcock or Agatha Christie. Whether it was horror, a thriller, or a more comedic take, watching a cast of characters try to decipher sometimes obvious clues was a thrill. It was the joy of thinking that perhaps you were smarter than the icons on the screen in figuring out some rather absurd, and often unbelievable events. One felt pride in waiting for the big reveal to proclaim “I knew who it was all along, sometimes whether true or not.” Because of that childhood ritual, mysteries have always stuck in my head as some of the most enjoyable plot-lines. It shouldn't surprise anyone that when The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940 crossed my field of view as a theater student at the impressionable age of 17, it became part of my official canon. The absurd duplicitous display of theater folk blends in beautifully with the thrill of a good murder mystery: a marriage one can find hard to separate in this farcical romp. I could get deep, and talk about the masks we wear: the people we try to project instead of the people we are. I could make commentary of the early mid-century and its parallels to today's muddled sense of society, or the role of artists in a changing world. Nah. First and foremost, this show is wildly entertaining and witty. It is escapism in its purest and most whimsical form. So, sit back and let the ride happen, and if you feel the need, find someone after the show to let them know that you knew who it was all along. Utah, and Herakles (Chorus/Madness) for the Classical Greek Theatre Festival. VICKI PUGMIRE (Bernice) is thrilled to back at the Grand Theater. This is both her 4th and her 1st production here because this Backstage at the Grand staging is completely new to her. Vicki has performed plays in art galleries, bars, warehouses and parks - it’s one of the interesting and challenging things about doing theater. For instance, she was in the Greek show, Antigone, for Westminster College and did ten shows in eight different spaces, from a tiny theater in downtown Denver to the Amphitheater in Zion. It has been great fun doing this play in this different fashion. She hopes you enjoy yourself tonight!

She has also done costume design and construction work for the following: the Classical Greek Theatre Festival, Westminster College Opera Studio, the University of Utah’s Babcock Theatre, Studio 115, and the Utah Museum of Natural History. SETH MILLER (Lighting Design) started out working in the Local 99 stage hands union, after which he attended the University of Utah for a degree in theatrical design. Seth began working at Lagoon Amusement Park in 1997 for their Entertainment Department as Staff Lighting Designer and still designs lights for their shows

today. He has worked as a free-lance Lighting Designer for a variety of local theatre companies, as well as many corporate events around the country, including Walt Disney World for Disney Event Group, Harley Davidson’s Annual National Dealer’s Convention, and many others. Seth has been the Artistic/Executive Director for the Grand Theatre in Salt Lake City for the past 4 seasons. MÁIRE NELLIGAN (Properties Design) received a BFA in theatre from Marietta College before attending graduate school at AU. She worked as a techie, a designer, an actor, and a director in the Midwest and Southwest before moving to Salt Lake. Máire took over as Properties Master for the Grand several seasons ago, debuting with Man of La Mancha. While her favorite show tends to be whichever she is currently working on, Miss Evers' Boys and The Wizard of Oz are particularly memorable; and dressing La Cage aux Folle may well go down as the most fun ever. TAHRA SI’MONE VEASLEY (Asst. Stage Manager) is currently a student in the Stage Management program at the University of Utah. Previous ASM credits include Steel Pier (Marriott Center for Dance), Arcadia (Babcock Theatre), Animal Farm (Babcock Theatre), Twelfth Night (Salt Lake Shakespeare), and School for Lies (Studio 115).
