Giant Beasts From Prehistoric Times They are presumed to be extinct, nonetheless the biggest beasts that ever walked the earth return to the twenty-first century at the Utah Arts Festival. With a deafening roar these Sauruses charge through the crowds, looking for food to calm their hunger. People jump swiftly out of their way having never seen such giant beasts before. These Sauruses are playful and spontaneous. After a while they move on, lined up neatly, their heads bobbing in an easy rhythmic manner, behind them a stunned audience stands and watches in amazement as the beasts slowly disappear. JAY LAWRENCE
SID RICHARDSON
Jazz Commission Salt Flats…(And Sharps) Salt Lake City Jazz Orchestra By Jay Lawrence Fri, June 21, 7:45pm Festival Stage This composition is a tip of the hat to the vast, amazingly flat, capacious desert area west of Salt Lake. It is intended to capture the rhapsodic delight of an anticipated road trip replete with an unfettered freedom, snacks, loved ones and naturally one’s favorite music.
Chamber Ensemble Commission Gramarye By Sid Richardson Sat, June 22, 4pm Library Auditorium Gramarye explores the interstices between music and language. Today, grammar is generally regarded as a ubiquitous study instilled in us from a young age in school. In the Middle Ages, however, knowledge of grammar was scarce enough to be considered a form of sorcery by the layman. Gramarye presents many variations of the opening harmonic material in varying textures that are each controlled by unique sound grammars.
Jay Lawrence Jay Lawrence has had a very diverse career as a performing and recording artist, composer, arranger, educator, clinician, adjudicator, band leader, contractor and author. He is the percussionist for the MT Pit Orchestra, co-owns the Jazz Hang record label with colleague Ray Smith, and is also the drummer for the Salt Lake City Jazz Orchestra. JAZZ COMMISSION SPONSOR
Sid Richardson Composer Sid Richardson writes concert music that imbues modern idioms with emotional grit and cerebral wit. His work explores the intersections of music and literature, drawing inspiration from the works of such writers as Beckett and Chaucer to create a style that focuses on harmony and timbre. Upon returning home he saw the lack of technical support for the arts in our kingdom. Through much sweat, toil & good times had by all, he built Oasis. That was 37 years ago and still to this day you can catch a glimpse of Gary as he hurries off to do his next show. But never fear as he has collected a well trained staff to help you with your needs.
