a message from MICHAEL BALLAM Dear Friends, Utah Festival Opera and Musical Theatre’s Silver Anniversary season is a celebration of iconic genius. They are the supreme offerings in each of the forms of story-telling through music. Thank you for joining us. In 1993, when we experimented with the idea of an international festival producing opera, operetta and musicals, we had no idea we would still be going strong 25 years later. Since then we have expanded in so many ways: · We’ve gone from three major productions each season to six. · 1993 Our annual budget was $300,000. Today it is $4.5 million. · 1993 Through the generosity of Dr. R.L. Smith, we acquired the historic Dansante Building. · 1994 Hyrum & Gail Smith and Richard & Judith Winward provided a capitalization fund of $2.5 million to facilitate and expand the Festival for these 25 years. · 1995 Larry H. & Gail Miller donated 197 apartment units to house a majority of the 300-plus seasonal Utah Festival employees and generate income sufficient to procure housing for the remaining 100 employees during the summer. · 1997 Larry H. & Gail Miller renovated the iconic Dansante Building, built in 1900, creating the home for the Festival’s executive offices and rehearsal spaces. · 1997 We created Opera By Children, which has empowered 80,000 students to create their own stories, libretti, music, costumes, and scenery to be printed and performed throughout the states of Utah, Arizona, California, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Missouri. · 2008 We founded the Utah Festival Academy, an adult/continuing education program offering over 50 classes to more than 3,000 participants. They are taught by experts in various performing arts fields to enhance the Festival experience in July and August. · 2009 Founded the Utah Festival Conservatory of the Performing Arts offering over 30 classes to more than 200 students from ages 4-18 in singing, dancing, acting and technical theatre year-round. · 2010 Began the Utah High School Musical Theatre Awards, a celebratory competition with over 2,000 Utah high school students participating that culminates in a gala event each year. Our 2017 awards presentation was held in the George S & Dolores Doré Eccles Theatre in Salt Lake City. · 2012 Through the generosity of Vern Buehler, we acquired the adjacent property north of the Dansante for future expansion. · 2016 with the generosity of Larry H. & Gail Miller, Michael & Laurie Ballam, George S & Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation, Ted & Elizabeth Schmidt, John & Nancy Schellkopf, Mike & Shari Ohman, the Utah State Legislature and Roy and Carol Christensen, the Historic Utah Theatre was acquired, expanded, renovated and enhanced to become one of the finest multi-use performing arts centers imaginable. It has been a wonderfully fulfilling journey over the past quarter-century. as we have been striving to Elevate People Through Ennobling Artistic Experiences. We could not have done it without you.

SEUSSICALTM Synopsis Act I. A strange red-and-white-striped hat appears on an empty stage. A Girl enters and is drawn toward the magical hat. The Cat in the Hat suddenly materializes! “You’ve got quite a mind for your age,” quips the Cat. Famous characters are introduced: Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, the Whos of Whoville, Mayzie La Bird, the Sour Kangaroo and the Citizens of the Jungle of Nool. The Girl and the Cat use their imaginations to transport everyone to the Jungle of Nool as the adventures begin. Horton hears a distant cry for help and follows the sound to a tiny speck of dust floating through the air. There are people living here, so small they can’t be seen – the tiny citizens of Whoville. Horton places Whoville safely onto a soft clover just as Sour Kangaroo and her baby arrive. The Sour Kangaroo thinks Horton is crazy for talking to a speck of dust and mocks him for his delusions. The rascally Wickersham Brothers join in the fun of teasing Horton. The one person who stands up for Horton is his neighbor Gertrude McFuzz. As Horton is left alone with his clover, the Cat throws the Girl into the story – she becomes Jojo, daughter to Mr. Mayor and Mrs. Mayor of Whoville who are both unhappy with Jojo because her “Thinks” have gotten her into trouble at school. They tell her to take a bath and go to bed, but Jojo’s imagination turns her bathtub into McEligott’s Pool, full of fantastical fish! Horton sits alone, guarding the clover. Horton and Jojo hear each other and become friends when they realize their imaginations are alike. In another part of the jungle, Gertrude believes Horton doesn’t notice her because of her small and uninteresting tail. Mayzie offers advice which leads Gertrude to Doctor Dake and his pills for “amayzing” feathers. The Wickersham Brothers decide to steal the clover with Whoville on it. A chase ensues through the Jungle of Nool. The Wickershams eventually hand off the clover to “a black-bottomed eagle named Vlad Vladikoff” who flies off with the clover and drops it directly onto an enormous field of clover.

Act II. Horton begins looking for the Whos, clover by clover. Gertrude has followed the chase and arrives with her new, incredibly huge tail, determined to tell Horton how she feels. Horton is oblivious and Gertrude leaves, rejected and sad. Mayzie La Bird calls to Horton. She’s bored to death and convinces him to sit on the nest while she takes a brief vacation. Seasons pass, and Horton is still sitting on the egg. The Whos are still lost in the clover, and Gertrude still cannot get Horton to notice her and her new tail. Hunters arrive, capture Horton and the egg, and take him away. Horton is taken to New York where he is auctioned off to the circus. The traveling circus lands in Palm Beach where we find Mayzie vacationing under a palm tree. She decides she needs a change of scenery and heads to the circus where she finds Horton. He begs her to take back the egg, but Mayzie decides Horton would be a better parent than she could ever be. Horton accepts the responsibility even though he worries about Jojo and the Whos. Gertrude finds Horton asleep in his cage. She has managed to get rid of her unwieldy tail and has journeyed great distances to rescue him. She has great news – she has found the Whos’ clover! Horton realizes Gertrude is amazing. Just as Horton finds the Whos, the Sour Kangaroo and the Wickersham Brothers show up and make a citizen’s arrest. They take Horton back to the Jungle of Nool where he is put on trial “for talking to a speck and sitting on an egg.” Judge Yertle the Turtle sentences Horton to the Nool Asylum for the Criminally Insane and the speck of dust is ordered to be boiled in oil. Horton tells the Whos they must yell to be heard. The Whos make as much noise as they can, but only Horton can hear them. Suddenly, Jojo comes up with a Think: a new word to shout that will be heard by everyone--YOPP! At the last minute, all the animals of Nool hear Jojo’s cry and Whoville is saved. Just then, the egg hatches and all are astonished to see that it’s...an Elephant Bird! Horton looks to Gertrude for help, realizing she is his “one true friend in the universe.” She says, “You teach him earth and I will teach him sky.” The Cat hints that many more adventures are likely to occur “if you open your mind, oh, the thinks you will find.” All the characters vanish, leaving The Girl alone onstage with the red-and-white-striped hat.

REX Synopsis Act I. In 1520 at “The Field of Cloth of Gold” in Calais, France A peace treaty has been organized by Cardinal Wolsey, Archbishop of York. Henry VIII, king of England is there with his wife, Catherine of Aragon, daughter Mary and a large part of his court, including his fool, Will Somers, and court musician Mark Smeaton with whom he shares his latest song composition, “No Song More Pleasing,” which charms and delights everyone present. At the meeting with King Francis of France, Henry meets Anne Boleyn and immediately becomes smitten with her. Having failed to produce a male heir with his wife Catherine, Henry considers divorcing her and marrying Anne. Henry’s court astrologer, Comus, along with Will Somers, Mark Smeaton and Cardinal Wolsey humorously lament Henry’s notorious wandering eye in “The Chase,” leaving Henry to pluck the petals from a daisy to prophesy the outcome of his desire for Anne. Catherine refuses to grant Henry a divorce, so he founds the Church of England, and thus divorces and banishes Catherine. Passionately in love, Henry and Anne admit they cannot bear to be “Away From You,” but after their marriage things sour when Anne gives birth, not to a son, but to daughter “Elizabeth.” Things become further strained as Anne becomes intrigued with Mark Smeaton, and Henry with Jane Seymour, one of Anne’s ladies-in-waiting. Charges of treason against Anne and Smeaton are laid and they are found guilty. Shortly before her execution, Anne and Henry reflect on their time together, “So Much You Loved Me.” Will promises Anne that he will look after Elizabeth. Henry marries Jane Seymour and they have a son, Edward, but Jane dies in childbirth, leaving Henry conflicted as he rejoices in the arrival of his son, but questioning his methods in this pursuit. 20 minute intermission

Act II. Since the end of Act I, Henry has had three more wives: Anne of Cleves (divorced) and Catherine Howard (executed), and is now married to Katharine Parr, a matronly widow, who satisfies the elder Henry’s need for companionship. Edward is now 10, Elizabeth is a healthy young woman, and joined by their half-sister, Mary, they celebrate “Christmas at Hampton Court.” Francis of France arrives to discuss the terms for peace and brings Henry a gift: pear trees from Anjou, a rare fruit that comes to maturity once every 10 years. Following a ferocious altercation with Elizabeth, Henry realizes that he admires her regal courage and she is the “son” he never had; but to love and admire her duly, it must be “From Afar” and he banishes her from the kingdom. Will Somers cheers Elizabeth up, then proceeds to humorously torment Comus, who is in the course of charting the worst prediction of his career: Edward will not live to maturity and Elizabeth will become a great leader. Henry falls ill and reflects on the events and motives in his life. While he is still determined to live to see the fruition of “The Pears of Anjou,” he dies. Elizabeth gives encouragement to the nervous Edward, telling him that with courage and determination, he will be a fine king “In Time.” Edward ascends to the throne, but in a final tableau, we see Henry’s realization and acceptance that Elizabeth will become the great ruler he had always wanted.

THE MUSIC MAN Synopsis Act I. Professor Harold Hill has developed a reputation amongst traveling salesmen and none of it is good. In order to sell his band instruments and uniforms he promises to form local student bands. After he gets paid, he disappears with the money. At the Fourth of July celebration, Harold takes advantage of a disrupting prank to move in and sell his big idea. The Mayor continues to push for proper credentials, but Harold is slippery. Marian is the single and beautiful town librarian on a mission to debunk Harold’s identity. Her research pays off, but she withholds the evidence when she discovers Harold is helping her brother, Winthrop, to cure his speech impediment. With the exception of the Mayor, the town is now under Harold’s spell.

MEREDITH WILLSON’S

THE MUSIC MAN Act II.

Marian confesses that she has known Harold was a fake since the third day he was in town. The uniforms arrive but so does Charlie Cowell, the anvil salesman, Harold’s arch enemy. Marian tries to prevent Charlie from getting to the mayor, but is unsuccessful. She wants to warn Harold, but Charlie reaches him first. He still has time to run, but can’t. He’s in love with Marian. The Mayor enters with Charlie Cowell who tells the townspeople about Harold’s plan to leave town with their money without providing lessons for the boys’ band. After some anger on the part of the townspeople and some pleading from Harold, Harold convinces the boys to give playing a try. He gives them the upbeat, and miraculously they are able to play a barely recognizable Minuet in G. The townspeople are thrilled.

MADAMA BUTTERFLY Synopsis Act I. A Japanese house and garden, overlooking Nagasaki Harbor, 1900 Lieutenant B.F. Pinkerton, an American naval officer, has decided to lease a house from Goro, a marriage broker. Three servants, including the housemaid Suzuki, are included in the agreement. Goro has also arranged for a temporary wife while Pinkerton is in Japan. The marriage is as flexible as the 999-year lease—it can be broken at any time. Pinkerton weds the 15-year-old Japanese girl, Cio-Cion-San (Madama Butterfly), who expects marriage to be a lifetime commitment and has secretly accepted Christianity in an attempt to adopt Pinkerton’s American culture. Cio-Cio-San’s uncle, the Bonze, is a Buddhist priest. He interrupts the wedding festivities and tells her family and friends to disown her because she renounced the religion of her ancestors. Pinkerton orders all the guests to leave, and they curse Butterfly as they go. She weeps bitterly, but Pinkerton comforts her and soon all is forgotten as the two express their love. 20 minute intermission

Act II. Three years later Suzuki tells Butterfly they have very little money left, but Butterfly assures her Pinkerton will return as promised “when the robins nest.” Sharpless arrives with a letter from Pinkerton, but is continually interrupted and cannot read it. Butterfly reveals Goro’s next plan to match her with his wealthy client, Prince Yamadori. Sharpless agrees, knowing that Pinkerton does not intend to see Butterfly again, even though he’s coming back to Nagasaki. Feeling betrayed, Butterfly introduces her son to Sharpless: for now he is called Sorrow, but when his father returns his name will be Joy. The harbor cannon announces the arrival of a ship. Butterfly discovers it is Pinkerton’s and is overjoyed. She and Suzuki spread cherry blossoms throughout the house and they include Sorrow as they begin their vigil.

Act III. Early the next morning An exhausted Butterfly sings a lullaby to her son. Sharpless arrives with Pinkerton and his new American wife, Kate, who are hoping to adopt Sorrow and take him to America. Pinkerton, filled with remorse, cannot bear to face his beautiful Butterfly. Kate meets Butterfly and asks for the child. She promises to treat him with affection and care. Butterfly says she will only give him to Pinkerton. She prepares to end her own life, but is interrupted by the appearance of her son. She tells Sorrow she hopes he will remember her, but never know that she died for him. Cio-Cio-San gives the child a little flag to play with and blindfolds him. Returning to her task, she stabs herself. Pinkerton rushes in with Sharpless. As he kneels over the dying CioCio-San, she gestures toward their son.

THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE Synopsis Act I. The pirates are celebrating Frederic’s twenty-first birthday. He has finished his apprenticeship and is now a full-fledged pirate. Some years earlier, Ruth, Frederic’s nurse, mistakenly bound him to serve a pirate instead of a pilot. Frederic abhors this occupation, but due to an absurdly over-developed sense of duty, he has refused to leave it until his service is completed. Now he invites the pirates to return to civilization with him, but their king points out that piracy is comparatively honest when contrasted with respectability. Frederic has never laid eyes on any woman other than the middle-aged, plain Ruth, who has remained by his side, and whom he thinks is beautiful. His view changes when he spies the comely daughters of the Major-General Stanley arriving for a picnic on the beach. Frederic begs one of them to take pity and marry him. He finds Mabel most willing, and the two sing a duet. The pirates return, kidnap the girls, and declare their immediate intentions of being “conjugally matrimonified.” The girls are saved by the arrival of the Major-General. His patter song extols his knowledge in all fields except military science. He throws himself on the mercy of the pirates, declaring himself to be an orphan, and the tender-hearted pirates agree not to take his daughters. 20 minute intermission

Act II. A ruined chapel by moonlight In the ruins of a chapel the Major-General has purchased to add luster to his ancestry, his daughters are trying to comfort him. He is suffering from a guilty conscience because he lied to the pirates about being an orphan and has brought shame upon his ancestors-by-purchase who lie buried in the nearby graveyard. Frederic, now allied with his fiancée, Mabel, and the Major-General declare their intentions to exterminate the pirates. Frederic’s change of view again stems from his sense of duty, this time to Mabel’s family and to society in general. The pirate king and Ruth return to tell him that he must rejoin the pirates, however, because a slight error in calculation was made and he is not yet free from his servitude. The wording of the contract that bound him to the pirates stipulated his twenty-first birthday, not his twenty-first year. Since Frederic was born on the 29th of February in a leap year, he will not reach his twenty-first birthday until 67 years hence, in 1940. Mabel agrees to wait for him until he is once again free in 1940 and resolves to lead the police expedition against the pirates herself, and against Frederic, whose sense of duty has once again brought about a change of alliance. The police arrive prepared for battle and lose to the pirates in less than three bars of music, but the pirates promptly surrender when the name of Queen Victoria is invoked. Ruth saves the day by revealing that the pirates are really misguided noblemen. Realizing the boost this could give to his social position, the Major-General urges the ex-pirates to resume their legislative duties and marry his large family of daughters on the spot.

THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME Synopsis Act I. It is the Feast of Fools, a day when all – even criminals (or worse, gypsies) – are free to roam the streets of Paris without fear of reprisal. In flashback, the archdeacon’s past is revealed. Frollo and his brother, Jehan, were taken in as orphans by the cathedral priests. Frollo thrived under the strict rules, but the much wilder Jehan eventually took up with gypsies. Frollo was later summoned to his estranged brother’s deathbed. Jehan asked Frollo to care for his gypsy baby. Frollo reluctantly agreed and named the deformed child Quasimodo (“half-formed”). Frollo kept Quasimodo secluded in the bell tower, where he is now the lonely, but staunchly obedient, bell-ringer at Notre Dame. In the square, Clopin leads the gypsies in their annual takeover of Paris just as Captain Phoebus de Martin arrives from the battlefront to assume command of the Cathedral Guard. The mob surrounds Quasimodo and beats him. The beautiful gypsy, Esmeralda, rescues Quasimodo. Concerned about Quasimodo’s welfare, Esmeralda ventures into the cathedral where Frollo, still overwhelmed by her beauty, offers her sanctuary and spiritual guidance. He cannot stop thinking about her and roams the streets in darkness. One night, he sees her in a tavern and convinces himself that she is a demon who has been sent to tempt his soul. He convinces King Louis XI to put out a warrant for her death. Frollo has Phoebus arrested, then stabs him and blames Esmeralda. 20 minute intermission

Act II. The choir sings the Entr’acte in Latin. In the bell tower, Esmeralda implores Quasimodo to hide the wounded Phoebus. He agrees, and she offers him an amulet that will show him where she hides. Frederic interrupts to reveal that the soldiers have found the gypsy lair, and Frollo declares they will attack at dawn. Quasimodo and the injured Phoebus use the amulet to find Esmeralda before Frollo does. Phoebus and Quasimodo are captured by the gypsies. Esmeralda intervenes, and they warn of Frollo’s impending attack. Phoebus and Esmeralda plan a life together while Quasimodo watches, heartbroken. Frollo barges in, sends Quasimodo back to the tower and arrests Esmeralda and Phoebus. Esmeralda and Phoebus spend their final night alive together in prison. Esmeralda is tied to a wooden stake. Frollo again offers to save her if she will be his. Her steadfast refusal enrages him, and he lights the pyre himself. Quasimodo swoops down to free her and claims sanctuary. When the Cathedral Guard breaks down the church doors, Quasimodo pours molten lead on them. Quasimodo returns to Esmeralda, who declares him a good friend before she dies in his arms. Frollo tries to comfort him, but he finally sees the archdeacon for the monster he is and throws him from the tower to his death. Phoebus arrives and collapses on Esmeralda’s body in grief.

oh BEHAVE Utah Festival Etiquette and Policies We want every guest to have the best time ever. To make sure we’re one big happy family, please obey these golden rules: 1. No crinkling. We know those hidden Bluebird chocolates are calling your name, but please don’t open the bag during the performance. If you might possibly need a lozenge, breath mint, or whatever, please unwrap it before the show begins. 2. Cell phones. Please turn them off. Even on silent, they will interfere with the sound system. 3. Texting. Your phone does not possess secret powers that make the screen invisible to everyone but you. Please don’t annoy or distract your neighbors. Feel free to tweet the universe about your amazing Utah Festival experience, but please do it during intermission or after the show. 4. Talking. This theatre has amazing acoustics and 1,106 other people can hear every word you say. The performance begins when the music starts, not when the curtain goes up. Show the orchestra some love—the overture is their time to shine. 5. Kids. We love them, but babes-in-arms and children under 5 are not allowed. This stuff is just too cool for them. Also, take your other youngsters (or spouse, etc.) out if they disturb the peace. 6. Tardiness. We’d love to hold the curtain for you, but if you’re late, we will seat you at intermission or at the first appropriate interval. In the meantime, relax and watch the show on the TV in the lobby, which is better than missing the whole thing. Policies: Boring but Necessary Backstage. Don’t go backstage, on stage, or in the theatre annex. Blankets. Because of our innovative cooling system we cannot precisely control the

70

temperature, so you might want to dress in layers. Light blankets are available free of charge on a first-come basis in the theatre lobby. Cameras and Recorders. Both are strictly prohibited without written permission. Exchange Policy. Tickets may be exchanged at least 48 hours in advance for another performance of the same production. No exchanges for a different production or if the performance date has passed. Exchanges are free for series subscribers; non-subscribers pay $2 per ticket. Free Parking is available at Logan High School (on 100 South between 100 and 200 West) and on the corner of Center Street and 100 West. Greet the Artists. Meet our company members after each performance outside at the Café des Artistes, on the south side of the theatre (when you’re facing the stage, head out the left-hand door). Hearing Devices. Borrow a sound enhancement headset free of charge on a first-come basis in the theatre lobby. Informances. Informal discussions take place in the theatre one hour before every performance. Learn plot and background details about each production. Refreshments. No refreshments are allowed in the theatre except bottled water, which you should be careful not to drop, slurp, or slosh. Refund Policy. There are no refunds. Smoking. No smoking. Wheelchair Seating is available. When ordering tickets, please advise the box office that you have a wheelchair. Arrive 30 minutes before curtain time to obtain assistance from the House Manager. Easy access is on the south side of the theatre (out the left door if you’re inside facing the stage). Drop off by the Café des Artistes and head to your left between the mansion and the theatre. An usher will be waiting at the door to help you.
