Director’s Note
This is the third time I’ve worked on a piece inspired by Alice in Wonderland. The first time, I was working with Youth Theatre’s high school conservatory students. We wrote a 50-minute version that was sometimes angry, really exciting, and involved aspects of social media. The second incarnation of the show included some of the same songs, but was a 12-minute version for a national musical theatre competition (which we won!). Again, it was a cast of high school students, and it was for an audience of high school students, too. This time, it’s been different. Although there are some songs that have travelled all this time with me, we’ve added more music and more of the original story. It’s not as angry, but it’s just as exciting I hope. So, what is it about Alice in Wonderland? The story of a young girl who dreams of a world with no rules, no order, and the ability to change herself to fit her surroundings is one that has always called out to young people. This version of Alice explores this timeless story in a contemporary way, each obstacle reflects universal struggles we are faced with as we grow up. Growing up often feels like a tailor-made version of Wonderland – we spiral out of childhood into an unfamiliar, often confusing, and sometimes terrifying world that demands to know who we are as it tries to change us at every turn. But the feelings of solitude that surround coming of age are universal. As alone as we all feel at one point or another, there is always someone who is feeling the same way. The 12 Alices in this production are a representation of just how communal this struggle really is. Everybody is Alice, and we’re all mad here.
