BIOS Choreographer’s Note: I really love California. The homeless situation in this state is deeply upsetting, which compelled me to create something to view the situation through the looking glass. In this journey the real meets the surreal as we look at the life of a young person going through the motions of existing, struggling, and eventually meeting their end. Lewis Carrol’s Alice in Wonderland provides a nonsensical perspective that somehow mirrors the extremes of the psychological and almost dream-like state of the protagonist. Alice in Californiland is a psychedelic tragedy.

Consultant’s Note: AXIS Dance Company is not simply a pioneer in physically integrated dance; AXIS consistently masters production themes with raw honesty and a profound awareness of the interconnected nature of our human lives. Through its authentic, even beautifully painful observations, AXIS is ideally positioned to honor the challenges, tragedies and resilience of those living visibly and invisibly on Bay Area streets. As a formerly homeless individual, I am humbled that the experiences of those struggling to carve out lives on our streets are compassionately and carefully examined in Alice in Californiland. The vast majority of chronically homeless individuals have one or more disabilities. AXIS offers its unique perspective and understanding at this intersection. – Mary Rogus
