STORYTELLER BIOS ALI ETMAN Ali is a member of the University of Utah School of Medicine Class of 2020 who is planning on pursuing a career in Family Medicine. Originally from Egypt, his family immigrated to the United States when he was a boy, settling in Syracuse, New York for the majority of his formative years. He completed his Bachelor’s at the University of Connecticut prior to relocating to Salt Lake City to be closer to family. Throughout his 4 years as a medical student he has fostered his passion for diversity and inclusion, and aspires to one day serve refugee and urban underserved communities. Outside of medicine he enjoys playing pickup basketball and sharing his story through spoken word, rap, and short stories. CASSIDY KOTOBALAVU, BSN, RN, OCN is a Nursing Professional Development (NPD) Practitioner at Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) in Salt Lake City, Utah, and coordinates the Huntsman Oncology Nurse Residency (HONR) program. Prior to entering nursing education, Cassidy was a clinical nurse at HCI and has experience in Bone Marrow Transplant, Hematology, and Medical Oncology. She serves on various committees throughout HCI and University of Utah Health, including the Evidence Based Practice Committee and the Compassionate Workplace Committee. Cassidy is passionate about enhancing mentorship for oncology nurses and fortifying new graduates with personal resilience and the ability to face inevitable challenges with strength and adaptability. Cassidy aspires to make a difference in the oncology nursing community and incorporate innovation and excellence into nursing education. Cassidy is currently in the Masters of Science Nursing Education program at the University Of Utah College Of Nursing. Outside of her professional life, Cassidy enjoys spending time with her husband and two young children, Maika and Khloe, who keep her very busy. LAWRENCE MARSCO, MSN, RN, OCN is currently the Sr. Nursing Director for Inpatient Services and the Director of Clinical Operations at Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah Health. Graduating with his BSN from the University of Cincinnati and MSN from the University of Phoenix, he has held multiple nursing leadership positions in his 34 years of nursing including Director of Nursing Practice, Patient Safety Officer and Manager of Accreditation and Quality, BMT Nurse Manager and Nurse Manager of Oncology Outpatient Clinics. His extensive clinical background includes critical care and oncology nursing. He has focused his leadership and nursing practice on quality, patient safety and outcomes with values of integrity, compassion and caring to ensure an exceptional patient experience. DEB PENNEY is a certified nurse-midwife and came to Utah in 2001 when she joined the University of Utah Nurse-Midwifery practice. She now teaches full time at the University and enjoys helping students get a broader perspective of their place in the world. Her background in global public health gives her opportunity to relate principles to real life problems. Debra spent a decade living in the Middle East, learning Arabic, practicing midwifery and teaching primary health care workers and midwives. She has been involved with many projects upgrading clinical and teaching skills of health workers in Yemen, and has been an external evaluator for a Maternal Child Health project in Afghanistan. She has presented nationally and locally on topics related to cultural responsiveness, refugees and women’s health. Her dissertation research explored the patient-provider health encounter and the intersection of race, ethnicity, religion and language.

PROGRAM IN MEDICAL ETHICS AND HUMANITIES UPCOMING EVENTS Physicians Literature and Medicine Discussion Group University of Utah Hospital Large Conference Room #W1220 February 12, 6:00-8:30pm Facilitated by Susan Sample, PhD, MFA In Shock: My Journey from Death to Recovery and the Redemptive Power of Hope by Rana Awdish March 11, 6:00-8:30pm Facilitated by Gretchen Case, PhD, MA RX: A Graphic Memoir by Rachel Lindsay Dr. Victoria Sweet – April 15-16, 2019-20 Medical Humanities Lecturer Victoria Sweet, MD, will lead Evening Ethics Wednesday, April 15: “Slow Medicine, Ethics, and the Case of Mrs. C.” and deliver an informal lecture on the main University campus April 16, titled “Hildegard of Bingen: Medieval lessons for Modern Medicine.” Dr Sweet agreed to work at Laguna Honda Hospital in San Francisco for two months but stayed twenty years. During that time, she completed master’s and doctoral degrees in the history of medicine, which, coupled with her patient care experiences, led her to develop a radical approach to medicine. “[U]nderneath our scientific modern medicine was an earlier way of understanding the body,” she discovered: not corporate “fast medicine” where the body is viewed as a machine and the physician, a technological mechanic, but “slow medicine” where the doctor is more akin to a gardener, “stepping back and seeing the patient in the context of his environment.” This, Sweet argues, is the way to healing. She is the award-winning author of God’s Hotel: A Doctor, a Hospital, and A Pilgrimage to the Heart of Medicine and Slow Medicine: The Way to Healing.
