(Very) Brief Glossary Binary A way of thinking about gender as only male/female or masculine/feminine; a way of thinking about sexuality as only heterosexual/homosexual or butch/femme. Cisgender Gender identities that correlate to one’s assigned sex assigned at birth. Gender non-conforming / Gender expansive / Gender fluid Moving between multiple gender or sexual identities; existing in an identity that cannot be fixed within a gender or sexual binary. Queer Identities that exist outside of, in contrast to, or beyond the norm. Trans Someone whose gender identity does not “match” their assigned sex; an umbrella term to describe identities or behaviors that fall outside of dominant gender norms.

Biographies

YANA BIRŸKOVA (projection design) is a multimedia artist and designer from Moscow, Russia. She has designed shows at Westport Country Playhouse; Yale University; Yale Repertory Theatre; Amherst College; Dmitry Krymov Lab; Yale Cabaret; Studio Tisch; Irish Repertory Theatre among others. In addition to theatre design Yana has worked on art installations and performances featured at the Yale Art Gallery, Danspace Project, Harvestworks. MFA: Theatre Design from Yale School of Drama. www.yanabiryukova.com VASSILISA JOHRI (drums) was saved by music growing up a queer, Indian, immigrant, masculine of center without the words for that ever evolving tomboy/tuffgirl swirl. An alum of Berklee College of Music,

Vassi is grateful for the opportunity to fuse a range of musical styles while uplifting oppressed communities, bringing people together, and serving as a catalyst for social change and collective resistance. In other moments, s/he works with young people, teaches somatics, takes photos, and loves on her dogs and beloved peoples. SK KERASTAS (they/them) (script support) is a theatre artist, facilitator, organizer, and the current Artistic Producer at Cal Shakes. They co-founded #BreakingtheBinary, a series of arts programming and EDI Workshops for arts organizations that creates and supports sustainable practices for trans inclusion and accessibility. They were a Visiting Artistic Associate at Berkeley Repertory Theatre through Theatre

Biographies

Communication Group’s Leadership U: One-on-One Grant. Prior to that, SK served as the Education Director at About Face Theatre in Chicago where they directed and managed the queer and trans youth theatre with an emphasis on intersectional identity politics. RHONDA KINARD (guitar, musical arrangements) was born and raised in Oakland, CA, and she’s been slinging strings since her early college days. She’s adept at many musical styles, and most recently toured the Pacific Northwest with an outlaw country band. When she’s not performing or recording with a variety of SF Bay Area bands, she can be found

refurbishing guitar amps, volunteering with a local disability advocacy org, and mentoring college students. DANIEL MORETTI (costume design) has worked on costume design teams for numerous feature films in Los Angeles, and was a Producer for Fashion TV in the Philippines and Singapore. For over a decade he has worked at the intersection of film and social justice, and is currently the Director of Distribution and Educational Programming at Frameline, a non-profit whose mission is to change the world through the power of queer film. TEREZIA OROSZ (voice) is a singer and

Biographies

songwriter based in Oakland, CA. Raised in Ohio by a musical family that sang every Sunday in church, Terezia enjoys performing a variety of music styles, especially those that lift the spirit. She is also a licensed clinical social worker and somatics practitioner, currently working with youth in school-based health centers. Outside of formal work, Terezia makes the world a more safe and loving place by spending quality time with her nieces and nephews and training in community martial arts and self-defense. PAVITHRA PRASAD (staging direction) is a performer, musician, playwright, and scholar focused on the intersections of race, class, gender, and cultural identity. Her work explores how we understand and engage cultural differences across borders and aesthetic practices. Prasad’s written work has been published in multiple scholarly journals and her performance work has been presented in venues across the country. T. CARLIS ROBERTS (voice, concept, artistic direction) is a composer, sound designer, performer, and scholar. In addition to The Singing Bois, T has performed music with artists including Las Bomberas de la Bahía, The Crane and the Crow, and Afia Walking Tree. As a theater artist, T has presented work across the U.S. in major regional theaters, storefront black boxes, university arts centers, and experimental and sitespecific settings. T is Associate Professor of

Music at University of California, Berkeley and has presented and published awardwinning scholarship on gender, sexuality, and race in national and international venues. www.tcarlisroberts.com VANESSA SANCHEZ (choreography) is a dancer, educator, and choreographer who focuses on community arts education and multi-cultural dance forms. Based in San Francisco, Vanessa has studied and performed throughout the United States, Mexico and Brazil. Her dance styles range from Tap and Jazz dance to Bhangra and Afro-Caribbean styles, including AfroBrazilian and Afro-Cuban. She currently teaches throughout the Bay Area and is the Artistic Director of La Mezcla. JESSE STRAUSS (bass) is an Oakland-born and raised bassist, activist, and uncle. After playing bass for 15 years and studying jazz at Laney College, he now holds down the low end for groups spanning a musical range from jazz (Equinox) to soul (Sariyah Idan), hip hop (Genie of the Lamp) to rock (Eve of Eden), pop (Natasha Blume) to cumbia (Bang Data), and more. JADE WAY (voice) is a singer/songwriter and musician from Michigan. Raised by musician parents, from an early age, Jade had many teachers of classical, jazz, pop and R&B influence. Jade joins The Singing Bois to live out her troubadour dreams. When she’s not with The Singing Bois, she’s leading her soul-pop band, Jade VELVET.
