Music Director of the Utah Symphony since 2009 and currently extended to 2022, Thierry Fischer has revitalized the orchestra with creative programming, critically acclaimed performances, and new recordings. Highlights of his tenure include a multi-season Haydn symphony cycle; Mahler, Beethoven, and Nielsen cycles; and a tour of Utah’s five national parks. In celebration of its 75th anniversary season, the orchestra appeared at Carnegie Hall in April 2016 to critical acclaim and released an album of newly commissioned works by Nico Muhly, Andrew Norman, and Augusta Read Thomas on Reference Recordings. Following a well-reviewed recording of Mahler’s 1st Symphony, they recorded Mahler’s 8th Symphony in Utah with the world-renowned Mormon Tabernacle Choir, due for release later this season.

In September 2016 Fischer was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, starting January 2017 and running concurrently with his Utah position for an initial three years. He will visit Seoul at least four times a season and will play an important role in the artistic planning. In summer 2016, Fischer toured with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, and debuted at the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York and at the Maggio Musicale Festival in Florence. Guesting in the past couple of years has also included the Boston, Atlanta, Cincinnati, and Detroit Symphonies, Oslo Philharmonic, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Salzburg Mozarteumorchester, Munich Chamber, Swedish Chamber, and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, as well as the BBC Symphony at the Barbican and the London Sinfonietta. In autumn 2016 he conducted the Sao Paulo Philharmonic—his first visit to South America. Fischer started out as Principal Flute in Hamburg and at the Zurich Opera. His conducting career began in his 30s when he replaced an ailing colleague, subsequently directing his first few concerts with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe where he was Principal Flute under Claudio Abbado. He spent his apprentice years in Holland, and became Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the Ulster Orchestra 2001–06. He was Chief Conductor of the Nagoya Philharmonic 2008–11, making his Suntory Hall debut in Tokyo in May 2010, and is now Honorary Guest Conductor.

Tribute to Ardean Watts

Utah Symphony Associate Conductor Ardean Watts and Music Director Maurice Abravanel, c. 1968

Ardean Walton Watts, husband of Elna Elaine Brown; father of 8; grandfather of 37; great grandfather of 28; and mentor and friend to thousands, passed away at the age of 89 on July 21, 2017 from complications following surgery. Ardean joined the Utah Symphony as pianist in 1956 due to the endeavors of Maurice Abravanel and was appointed to the additional position of associate conductor in 1968, a position he held until 1979. As conductor of all of the orchestra’s school concerts and most of the Intermountain and in-state tours in the 1970s and many school and out-of-town concerts before that, Ardean was an important part of the organization’s state-wide reach for a generation of Utahns. “Ardean Watts is that magnificent musician who is the pride of your music department and the man thanks to whom I could carry on as music director of the Utah Symphony long after my health would have dictated many times to give up during the past five years.” – Maurice Abravanel at the June 1980 University of Utah Commencement

In addition to his career with the Utah Symphony, Ardean influenced the musical landscape of Utah in nearly every way possible. He was professor of music at the University of Utah, and founded and led the University of Utah Opera Company in 1965 which provided a solid foundation for the Utah Opera’s formation in 1977. He also served as Principal Conductor and later Music Director for Ballet West and Musical Director for Pioneer Memorial Theater. Prior to his career in classical music, he was the director of his own jazz band that performed regularly at the old Saltair. Ardean truly left the world a better place through the energy he generated in whatever cause he was involved. His passion for music and love for people helped many to dig deep into their souls and find the music within themselves. “I did not realize as a youngster that I had the option to be associated with a great symphony orchestra, but when everything in one’s life comes out right – it is a miracle.” – Ardean Watts, as quoted in a 1975 Utah Symphony program feature

Many of you recognize Kem not only from his long and distinguished career as a developer, but also for the extraordinary leadership he provides to enhance the quality of life for everyone in our community. LEGACY OF A CARNIVAL When one thinks of the music of 19th-century French Romantic composer Camille SaintSaëns (1835–1921), what comes to mind? Perhaps the sultry Middle Eastern melodies of Samson et Delila, or the triumphant, brassy finale of the “Organ” Symphony. Perhaps even the glittery, whimsical tunes that permeate Carnival of the Animals. These are all fantastic examples of Saint-Saëns’ unmatched musical style, but there is so much more to this composer than his few most famous works. Saint-Saëns left an immense musical legacy behind, having written five symphonies, five piano concertos, several operas (and operettas), incidental music, a wide breadth of chamber music, and numerous works for solo piano and solo organ. Utah Smyphony’s Saint-Saëns Project focuses mainly on the composer’s five symphonies; only one of which is regularly performed by American orchestras (Symphony No. 3, his final

Saint-Saëns occupied a particularly unique stylistic space in his compositions, bringing the influences of the composers he most admired (Liszt, Wagner, Mendelssohn, and Beethoven, to name a few) as well as the musical idioms of far-flung destinations (including Egypt, Algeria, and Japan) into the sphere of French Romanticism. Similar to the Romantic Movement that took hold in Austria and Germany in the mid-1800s, French Romanticism was marked by a preoccupation with drama on a historical and an individual level, a heightened interest in national identity, and a general expansion or rejection of existing musical structures. As some of his late-19th century contemporaries were forging new paths at the edges of tonal music, Saint-Saëns was firmly rooted in the classical conventions of French composers before him, making him an unusual figure within the framework of the Romantic period. Despite this, his signature use of colorful harmony influenced the French Impressionist composers who would rise to popularity toward the end of his life. The confluence of these seemingly disparate stylistic attributes is what makes Saint-Saëns’ music so intoxicating and irresistible. He is able to seamlessly weave unusual, exotic harmonies and melodic lines into ingrained musical forms, simultaneously surprising and delighting the listener’s ear.

SAINT-SAËNS RECORDING CYCLE Saint-Saëns’ music is clearly worth learning and exploring, but why record so much of it? As our Vice President of Operations and General Manager, Jeff Counts, wrote in a playbill feature last year, recording raises the level of artistic excellence and focus in an ensemble. Beyond that, recording also allows an orchestra to put its distinct interpretation of a work into the world, to stand and be judged among other orchestras’ interpretations. In the case of Saint-Saëns, however, some works have rarely been recorded at all. For example, his Trois tableaux symphoniques après La foi— another non-symphonic orchestral work that will be included in the recording project—has been commercially recorded less than ten times. This recording project on European label Hyperion will make the Utah Symphony the first American orchestra to record all of Saint-Saëns’ five symphonies, giving the orchestra the extraordinary opportunity to become a leading voice in the interpretation of Saint-Saëns’ works.

While many contemporaries and students of Saint-Saëns considered him to be a genius, his influence is certainly felt less in the orchestral world today. For this reason, recording three discs worth of his music will be no easy feat, especially because this music is both technically and artistically difficult. Due to the logistical challenges of live recording, most of the repertoire that will be recorded is piled into consecutive weeks. Recording weeks are exhausting, as players are operating at the highest possible level of artistic awareness. Nevertheless, our musicians are certainly up to the task. Over the past five seasons the Utah Symphony has taken on many symphonic cycles, covering some of the most revered symphonists in history (Beethoven and Brahms) as well as composers who challenged the very idea of what defined a symphony (Mahler and Ives). It is now time to shift the focus to a composer whose works, as Music Director Thierry Fischer has pointed out, truly embody the artistic identity of the Utah Symphony in their audacity, spunk, excellence, bravery, creativity, and—perhaps most importantly— their balance between tradition and diversity. How fitting a challenge to further Saint-Saëns’ legacy. Tim Burton, widely regarded as one of the cinema’s most imaginative filmmakers, has enjoyed great success in both the liveaction and animation arenas. Most recently Burton directed and produced the critically acclaimed Frankenweenie which was a 2012 Academy Award® nominee for Best Animated Picture.

directing work on Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, which also won the Golden Globe for Best Film – Musical or Comedy. Depp earned an Oscar® nomination for his performance in the title role of Burton’s 2007 film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim musical thriller, also starring Bonham Carter and Alan Rickman.

Earlier in 2012 Burton directed Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter and Eva Green in the gothic thriller Dark Shadows, based on the cult favorite television show. He also produced the fantasy horror Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter which was directed by Timur Behmambetov.

Burton began his film career in animation, and, in 1982, directed the stop-motion animated short Vincent narrated by Vincent Price, which was an award winner on the film festival circuit. He made his feature film directorial debut in 1985 with the hit comedy Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure. In 1988, Burton helmed the inventive comedy hit Beetlejuice, starring Michael Keaton as the title character. He then reteamed with Keaton on the action blockbusters Batman, which became the topgrossing film of 1989 and also starred Jack Nicholson as the Joker, and Batman Returns, also starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Danny DeVito.

In 2010, he directed Alice in Wonderland, an epic fantasy based on the classic story by Lewis Carroll, and starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway, and Mia Wasikowska in the title role. The film earned more than a billion dollars at the worldwide box office, making it the second-highest-grossing release of 2010. Alice in Wonderland also received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy, and won two Academy Awards®, for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design. Burton was previously honored with an Academy Award® nomination for Best Animated Feature for the 2005 stop-motion film Corpse Bride, which he directed and produced. He earlier received BAFTA Award and Critics’ Choice Award nominations for Best Director for the acclaimed fantasy drama Big Fish. More recently, Burton won a National Board of Review Award and garnered Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award nominations for his

In November of that year, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) opened an extensive exhibit of his work, which went on to tour in Melbourne, Toronto, Los Angeles, Paris, and Seoul.

He travelled the world as a young man, absorbing its musical diversity. He also composed a ballet, Rabbit and Rogue, choreographed by Twyla Tharp, a symphony entitled Serenada Schizophrana for Carnegie Hall, an overture called The Overeager Overture for the Hollywood Bowl, and, Iris—a Cirque du Soleil show. “Having a particular style is not bad,” says Elfman, “but I prefer to push myself in the direction of being a composer who you never know what he’s doing next.”

Conner Gray Covington was recently appointed Assistant Conductor of the Utah Symphony, a position he begins in the 2017–2018 season. He just recently completed his tenure as the Rita E. Hauser Conducting Fellow at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he works closely with the Curtis Symphony Orchestra and the Curtis Opera Theater while also being mentored by Philadelphia Orchestra Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin. He recently made his Carnegie Hall debut with the Curtis Symphony Orchestra sharing the podium with Ludovic Morlot.

Conner Gray Covington conductor

Covington began his career as Assistant Conductor of the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and Music Director of the Memphis Youth Symphony Program. A two-time recipient of a Career Assistance Award from the Solti Foundation U.S. (2017 and 2014), he recently worked with the Nashville Symphony as a featured conductor in the 2016 Bruno Walter National Conductor Preview presented by the League of American Orchestras. In the summers of 2011 and 2012, Covington attended the Aspen Music Festival as a fellowship student in the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen. There he worked closely with Robert Spano, Larry Rachleff, and Hugh Wolff as well as other guest conductors throughout the summer. Covington has also conducted in masterclasses of Michael Tilson Thomas, Vladimir Jurowski, Marin Alsop, and Miguel Harth-Bedoya and for two summers studied with Michael Jinbo at the Pierre Monteux School for Conductors. Born in Louisiana, Covington grew up in East Tennessee and began playing the violin at age 11. He completed high school at the renowned High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, Texas. He then went on to study violin with Dr. Martha Walvoord and conducting with Dr. Clifton Evans at the University of Texas at Arlington where he graduated summa cum laude with a degree in violin performance. He continued his studies with Neil Varon at the Eastman School of Music where earned a MM in orchestral conducting and was awarded the Walter Hagen Conducting Prize.

Jack Everly is the Principal Pops Conductor of the Indianapolis and Baltimore Symphony Orchestras, Naples Philharmonic Orchestra, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra (Ottawa). He has conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, The New York Pops at Carnegie Hall, and appears regularly with The Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom Music Center. Maestro Everly will conduct over 90 performances in more than 22 North American cities this season. As Music Director of the National Memorial Day Concert and “A Capitol Fourth” on PBS, Maestro Everly proudly leads the National Symphony Orchestra in these patriotic celebrations on the National Mall. These concerts attract hundreds of thousands attendees on the lawn and the broadcasts reach millions of viewers and are some of the very highest rated programming on PBS television. Mr. Everly is the also Music Director of Duke Energy Yuletide Celebration, now a 30-plus-year tradition. He led the ISO in its first Pops recording, Yuletide Celebration, Volume One, that included three of his own orchestrations. Some of his other recordings include In The Presence featuring the Czech Philharmonic and Daniel Rodriguez; Sandi Patty’s Broadway Stories; the soundtrack to Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame; and Everything’s Coming Up Roses: The Complete Overtures Of Jule Styne. Originally appointed by Mikhail Baryshnikov, Mr. Everly was conductor of the American Ballet Theatre for 14 years, where he served as Music Director. In addition to his ABT tenure, he teamed with Marvin Hamlisch on Broadway shows that Mr. Hamlisch scored. He conducted Carol Channing hundreds of times in Hello, Dolly! in two separate Broadway productions. Mr. Everly, a graduate of the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, is a recipient of the 2015 Indiana Historical Society Living Legends Award and holds an Honorary Doctorate of Arts from Franklin College in his home state of Indiana. He is a proud resident of the Indianapolis community for over 15 years and when not on the podium you can find Maestro Everly at home with his family, which includes Max the wonder dog.

Two-time Drama Desk Award-nominated actress, singer, and impressionist Christina Bianco has become a YouTube sensation with her diva impression videos. A woman of a thousand versatile voices, Christina has gained 23 million views worldwide, leading to performances on major television programs such as The Ellen Degeneres Show and The Today Show. Christina made her West End debut starring in The Menier Chocolate Factory’s hailed production of Forbidden Broadway at the Vaudeville Theatre in London. In New York, Christina is currently starring Off-Broadway in The Marvelous Wonderettes. Other New York credits include the one-woman, 40-character comedy, Application Pending (Drama Desk Award Nomination); Newsical the Musical; Forbidden Broadway; Goes To Rehab (Drama Desk Award Nomination); Raﬃ On Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre; Tony and Tina’s Wedding (Tina); and It Must Be Him. Christina originated the role of Dora in the long-running National Tour of Dora The Explorer Live, including a sold-out run at Radio City Music Hall. Christina DeCicco is thrilled to be singing with the Utah Symphony and the wonderful Jack Everly. She has sung with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Long Island Philharmonic, Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Symphony, and the Fort Wayne Philharmonic. On Broadway, she has been seen starring as Eva Perón in the original cast of the 2012 Revival of Evita opposite Ricky Martin, as Arachne in U2’s Spiderman: Turn Oﬀ the Dark, and as Sister Mary Robert (understudy) in the Original Cast of Sister Act, The Musical. She has toured the country portraying the role of Glinda in the Stephen Schwartz hit Wicked. Off Broadway, audiences have seen her as Cindy Lou Huffington in the juke box musical The Marvelous Wonderettes. Regionally, Christina has played such roles as Maggie in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (Triad Stage), Billie Dawn in Born Yesterday (Asolo Repertory Theatre), Gabriella in Boeing Boeing (Gulfshore Playhouse), Barbara Rose in War of the Roses (Delaware Theatre Company), Mary Poppins in Mary Poppins (Theatre Under the Stars), Betty Schafer in Sunset Boulevard (Ogunquit Playhouse), and Éponine in Les Misérables (Walnut Street Theatre-Barrymore Award Winner), among others. artists’ proﬁles N’Kenge made her Broadway debut in Sondheim on Sondheim singing alongside Vanessa Williams, Barbara Cook, Tom Wopat, and Norm Lewis. She was also recently seen on TV as a presenter at the 58th Annual New York Emmy Awards. N’Kenge had the honor to sing at the White House for President Bill Clinton and for the Commander-in-Chief Ball for President Barack Obama. In addition, she starred in London’s West End at the Theatre Royal in a tribute to the late great Ray Charles, and has performed solo engagements in New York at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. A solo performance of particular note took place in Washington, D.C. at the Library of Congress, and was broadcast worldwide by National Public Radio. N’Kenge is consistently seen as a soloist in pop programs with the Indianapolis Symphony, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra and New York Pops Orchestra, among others around the globe. N’Kenge is the star and conceiver of Broadway bound musical Dorothy: The Legacy based on the life and music of Hollywood’s First Black Leading Lady Dorothy Dandridge. Described as possessing a “shimmering soprano” (The New York Times) with “sparkle and precision” (The Washington Post), Connecticut native Kristen Plumley enjoys singing everything from opera’s light lyric roles to oratorio to pops classics. On the concert stage, Kristen Plumley has performed a broad spectrum of works, including Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Requiem, as well as Haydn’s Mass in Time of War with the New England Symphonic Ensemble at Carnegie Hall. Additionally, she has sung Elgar’s For the Fallen, Bach’s Coﬀee Cantata, Respighi’s Laud to the Nativity, and Fauré’s Requiem. A lover of symphonic pops programs, Kristen enjoys singing under the baton of Jack Everly in concerts such as “Sci-Fi Spectacular” (music from science fiction movies and television shows) with the Cleveland Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony, Baltimore Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Edmonton Symphony, and Toronto Symphony, among others. She has also sung classic Broadway favorites with Maestro Everly in “Broadway Divas,” and has appeared in “An Evening of Gilbert and Sullivan” with the St. Louis Symphony, Richmond Symphony, Memphis Symphony, and Minnesota Orchestra. Enthusiastic about contemporary works, Kristen has been active in many new operas at the prestigious Banff Centre for the Arts in Alberta, Canada. In 2015 she created the role of Ruth Draper in Icarus Rising, a new dance opera about the life of Lauro DeBosis, a real-life Italian freedom fighter during World War II, with Verlezza Dance.
