Michael Ballam What a thrill to present a work based on Miguel de Cervantes’s masterpiece Don Quixote in its halfmillennium milestone! It was completed the year before his death in 1616. A piece of literature has to be a masterpiece to weather 500 years. Cervantes / Don Quixote is a very special role to me. It was my first professional role 46 years ago. What did I know about battling ogres, giants, and windmills and “marching through hell for heavenly causes” at the age of 17? I know now! My life has come to be one continuous crusade. Why? As Quixote says, “I hope to add some measure of grace to the world.” Striving to do so can engender considerable challenges and opposition. It has been my personal quest. Quixote is close to being autobiographical for me. If it were to be my last role, I would be satisfied. Seeing it in 1969 with my father was an extraordinary bonding experience that has stayed with me throughout my life. For that reason, our production is dedicated to the memory of my beloved father, Grant Ballam, who believed and supported me in my quest.

How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying was the first musical I saw on Broadway. It was 1962 and I was 11 years old. I would never have believed that Frank Loesser’s wife, Jo, would become a very special friend and a member of the Festival’s Board of Directors. Her help and advice in our previous productions of Frank’s works: Greenwillow, A Most Happy Fella, and Guys and Dolls, has been invaluable. Frank Loesser is universally considered the most versatile composer/lyricist in the history of Broadway. Within the next two years, we will have produced his entire body of work as we add Hans Christian Andersen and Where’s Charley to our repertoire. There is good reason Puccini’s La Bohème is the most oft-performed opera in history. Its soaring melodies, well-defined characters, and touching story have moved generations since its premiere in 1896. It has been the vehicle identified with the greatest singers of all time and our cast is superb. Hailed by the New York Times as the greatest musical of the Twentieth Century, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel is a masterpiece of mammoth proportion. In 1989, I selected Carousel to be the first musical in 50 years to be presented on this stage, launching the campaign to transform the neglected historic Capitol Theatre into the resplendent Ellen Eccles Theatre. The proceeds of that production funded the purchase of the adjacent property, which ultimately became the Bullen Center. Conceived to be sung by voices of stature, it is an ideal work to be produced by an opera company. Our cast includes some of our most admired returning performers. Utilizing the original, full orchestration makes our production unusual. Few companies expend the resources to re-create the symphonic sound that set Rodgers and Hammerstein apart as iconic. Richard Rodgers referred to it as his best work and his “thank you card to God” for having allowed him the stewardship of his talents. The return of Carousel to the Eccles stage means a great deal to me personally. As you can see, this is a very special season to me, and I wish to thank you for all the love and support you have given Utah Festival over the past 23 years.

La Bohème Synopsis Part I The poet Rodolfo, the painter Marcello, the philosopher Colline, and the musician Shaunard share a garret in the bohemian quarter of Paris in the mid 1800’s. They are poor but full of joie de vivre. The landlord tries to collect the rent. Mimi, a seamstress who lives next door, sees the opportunity to befriend the poet when he’s left alone by his buddies and invites herself to join the group for supper at the neighboring café. At the café, Rodolfo introduces Mimi to the group and Musetta, Marcello’s old flame, joins them with her current sugar daddy. After a public display of jealousy, everybody celebrates the happiness of new and renewed ties framed by a raucous parade. 15-minute Intermission

Carousel Synopsis Our production of Carousel, Oscar Hammerstein II and Richard Rodgers’ second collaboration, opens in the little town of Biddeford, Maine, in 1873 at a Carnival, where the carousel creates dreams and provides enchantment for the hard-working seafarers and millworkers of Biddeford. The swaggering and charismatic carousel barker, Billy Bigelow, meets the millworker Julie Jordan and they fall in love, sacrificing their jobs for their dreams. Julie’s best friend and fellow millworker, Carrie Pipperidge, falls in love with a solid but ambitious fisherman, Enoch Snow, and they share their dreams of home, family, and success. When Billy learns that his wife, Julie, is pregnant, he is desperate to support them and is convinced by the ne’er-do-well Jigger to attempt a robbery that goes fatally wrong. Dying, Billy is taken “Up There” and given a chance to make things right. Billy is allowed to return to earth for one day, which on earth is fifteen years later -1888, to try to help the daughter he has never seen. Lonely and friendless, Louise Bigelow has been haunted by her father’s reputation as a thief and bully. How Billy is able to help her and prove his love for Julie gives Carousel its universal appeal. Carousel is about all our hopes and dreams, and a testimony to the power of eternal love. There will be one 20-minute intermission.

How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying Synopsis ACT I J. Pierrepont Finch, a young window washer in New York City, sets about infiltrating World Wide Wickets armed only with his naïvely lofty goals and a book, How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Rosemary Pilkington, a pretty, young secretary is immediately taken with the ambitious Finch, whose professional pursuits trump those of the romantic sort, despite the match-making efforts of Rosemary’s friend, Smitty. With book in hand, Finch quickly rises to the ranks of junior executive, easily surpassing the lazy Bud Frump, the nepotistic nephew of J.B. Biggley, president of World Wide Wickets. Desperate to cut off Finch’s rise to the top, Bud negotiates Finch into a precarious position…the arms of Hedy LaRue, the newest addition to the company and J.B. Biggley’s secret mistress. But the unsinkable Finch manages to utilize the situation to climb another rung of the corporate ladder, gaining a promotion to vice president of advertising. 20-minute intermission ACT II

av W ai ine la bl e!

Mixing business with pleasure has stressed Finch and Rosemary’s relationship to the breaking point, as with Biggley and Miss LaRue. But Finch is oblivious to Rosemary’s plight as he has persuaded himself into a notoriously impermanent position. As vice president of advertising, Finch has been given 48 hours to come up with a stellar advertising campaign idea or face unemployment. In the eleventh hour, the obsessively conniving Frump presents Finch with just such an idea, knowing full well that Biggley despises it. However, Biggley embraces the idea once he realizes it could be the answer to all his problems with Miss LaRue. But the campaign has disastrous effects on the company and Chairman of the Board Wally Womper is brought in to decide whose heads should roll. Once again, Finch’s book comes to the rescue and all is well…for most.

Carmina Burana August 5, 7:30 p.m. Craig Jessop, Conductor Totentanz (Dance of the Dead): Paraphrase on Dies irae, S. 126..................... Franz Liszt (1811 – 1886) Special guest pianist: Hayden Hubbard Carmina Burana (Songs of Beuern).....................................................................Carl Orff (1895 – 1982) Cantiones profanae cantoribus et choris cantandae comitantibus instrumentis (Secular songs for singers and choruses to be sung together with instruments) American Festival Chorus Craig Jessop, Music Director Children’s Chorus Bonnie Slade, Conductor

Utah Festival Orchestra and Soloists Soprano Jamilyn Manning-White Tenor Peter Scott Drackley Baritone Gregory Gerbrandt

The title “Carmina Burana” (Songs of the Beuern) references the small municipality of Benediktbeuern in southern Germany where a collection of 11th-13th Century poems was found in the town monastery in 1803. During 1935-1936 composer Carl Orff set 24 of the poems to music for this work, which he subtitled “Cantiones profanæ cantoribus et choris cantandæ comitantibus instrumentis” (Secular songs for singers and choruses to be sung together with instruments). The work opens and closes with “O fortuna,” a text describing “fortune” or “fate” as a crushing wheel that allows people no control over their destinies. In between these movements, the bulk of the work is divided into three main sections: “In Spring,” “In the Tavern,” and the “Court of Love.” They depict, at times quite vividly, medieval thoughts and feelings about these topics that are not unfamiliar to audiences today. The texts are sung in their original languages of Latin, Middle High German, and Old Provençal. By K. Bruce Ford
