• The aim of this project is to design a cultural centre to aid the traditional Malaysian crafts in real existing issues • The site is situated at Terrenganu, on the site which the Pura Tanjung Sabtu Mansion sits on. • The cultural centre is to be incorporated with the existing mansion and any extensions are to be limited to 800sqm.

• Not enough awareness of traditional crafts from the new generations • It lacks appreciation in today’s era. • The number of artisans decreasing over the years. • The artisans are underpaid

are

• Organise exhibitions dedicated to the traditional crafts. • Organise workshops for the craft. • Modernizing the craft, find ways to integrate with today’s trend etc • Supporting the craftsmen even on a small scale.

• An institution which the public community can get hands on making and learning about the craft would help raise awareness and spread the knowledge of the craft to the people. Along with a library to allow the public to read about the history of the craft. • Exposing the public to the insights of the craft making process might trigger a spark of ideas and imagination that might take the craft to another level, allowing it to evolve and maybe turn into the next trend.

• Wau • Bamboo stick

1. Finding the right bamboo and testing the strength and durability.

2 . Selecting the bamboo of the specific size for different part of the wau.

4 . Pasting the finished canvas onto the frame.

5 . Lastly is to attach a fishing line to the kite to hold on while in flight. Done.

• Fishing line

3 . Building the frame to support the body of the wau.

4 . Cutting the pattern of the wau on black paper paper and pasting coloured papers behind.

• Since the wau requires quite an amount of paper to craft, an alternative approach to a self sustaining cultural would be crafting homemade recycled paper from paper waste collected from nearby residences.

HISTORY • A Local community hub for the people especially artist to discover new form of creativity and cultivate their skills. • A venue for markets, education, performance and meetings, a place for people to experience the Senegal society funded by the Jose and Anni Albes Foundation.

CONTEXT • Open plains with small residential buildings nearby.

RESPONSE TO SITE • Using materials of similar colour tone to the existing setting makes it feel like it emerged from the ground and is meant to be sitting on that particular spot.

FLEXIBLE SPACES • Yes, the interior is made of an open floor plan which serves as a multipurpose area.

PROGRAMMES • Artist creations, anyone can use the spaces to create art as they wish.

DESIGN STRATEGIES • The interior open floor plan method makes communication easier and doesn’t obstruct any view or circulation

HISTORY • Built for the analysis, dissemination and understanding of their culture, traditions and especially cacao processes from cultivation to becoming the best chocolate in the world. • Chocolate Paccari felt the need to show the community how the chocolate was made from the beginning.

CONTEXT • Foresty area with rivers nearby • 10 minutes walk from a nearby town.

RESPONSE TO SITE • Blends into the woods without any contrasting colours whatsoever since it used the principle “what there is” which means using only materials available on site.

FLEXIBLE SPACES • Yes, the interior is made of an open floor plan which serves as a multipurpose area.

PROGRAMMES • Workshop where the community can make the chocolate for themselves.

HOW THEY ACHIEVED THE EFFECT THE WERE AFTER? • They used all local materials so it blends in to the surrounding. • The interior is made to be open to nature. The high ceilings and large openings they managed to do so with adequate shelther.

DESIGN INTENTION

MATERIALS

- Retrofitting the existing building with a modern yet similar style

- Bamboo - Steel - glass

- Symmetrical and Hierarchy to represent the wau.

ADAPTATION TO SITE - Use of Bamboo structure - Skin detailing adapted and developed from PTS

SPACIOUS

CENTRAL SPACE

- Less Walls

- A Main Space which people would gather.

- Open Floor Plan

OPEN - More Openings - More Natural Ventilation

BRIGHT AMBIENT - Lighter Colours - Less Enclosure

EASY COMMUNICATION - Spaces are placed not too far apart

Brief History of the Project Back when we were interviewing the artisans regarding some of the issues they were facing for their crafts, one of the issue raised was the lack of recognition of these traditional craft as they couldn’t reach out to the younger audiences. A reasonable solution would be if the artisans could find a way to modernize their craft such as combining with some trends today. They might make the cut. That immediately became the starting point. To design a modern structure onto a traditional structure without disrupting the original flavor it.

Retrofitting.

1. Relating back to the issue the artisans are facing

2. Non- conflicting / clashing design with the existing context.

3. A space that would hopefully inspire the artisans to innovated their crafts.

4. Providing a comfortable bright and natural atmosphere for the creation of the crafts

5. Less energy Consumption / eco friendly building. Hence, the paper making workshop and the bicycle stands.

Air insulated Membrane roof

Steel joineries

- Found within site boundary

- Provides an earthy natural tone which is soothing to the eyes

- Acts like the body of the wau, a few layers of canvas to complete the structure.

- Provides sturdy joints to support and maintain the structure upright.

- Is used as the structure of the wau

- Insulated to reduce heat gain.

WIND PATH

The multiple tiered roofing and the strips of bamboo on the facade allows wind to pass through. Making the internal spaces properly ventilated.

The gaps in between the tiered roofing also allows the warmer air to rise and ventilate itself from there.

Roof Plan

The roof is designed to represent the wau, in which it shelters the place where it is created . The large body and side wings just like the wau is what makes it unique, it is distinguished from other kites with these characteristics.

Roof Shape

Multitiered Roof found in existing mansion design

This is also inspired by the technique of making wau, where the coloured papers are layered over and over then topped with a black paper with the patterns

The advantage of this design is that it allows for natural daylighting and natural ventilation within the interior

Roof structure shape

This arc was extracted from the arc that is used as the main support for the wau itself. It is only reasonable that an arc is used to support the ‘ wau’ roof

These curved bamboo struts are influenced by the softlab structure, they ‘invade’ a normal design bombarding with these alien forms which fits quite nicely in context.

Sectional axonometric

Faรงade of the Proposed extension

Not only it fits the context, but this design also promotes air circulation due to its porous nature.

To not differ too much from the existing detailing, the faรงade of the proposed extension is done in a way that mimics the patterns on the existing faรงade so that it fits in context better.

It also acts as a filter that partially blocks out daylight and still brings in a healthy amount into the internal spaces
