It is important, though, that the rug fits in the room properly. In larger rooms, the area rug should be of sufficient size so that it doesn't look awkward in the room. But if the room is small, a large rug will look too imposing. When room colors are chosen by children, they usually select colors that are very bright and bold, that parents usually do not prefer. Letting them pick the color is a great idea, but use a lighter version of what they pick out instead. Then, give them the freedom to choose absolutely any color for their furniture. Rather than bold neon blue walls, go for a softer shade for the room, but paint the dresser or nightstand in the neon colors they prefer.

How Can You Sustain High Performance In Your Company? by Nancy Proffitt Listen to most executive management people in an organization and they often speak with considerable enthusiasm about how they run a people first organization, while instead spending the majority of time talking to employees about revenues and profits. As business leaders or department heads, we all understand the basic premise that an organization, whether it is a healthcare facility such as a hospital or a small business, has to make money to stay in business. But what we chose to focus on to make that money is the key to whether we are successful in that endeavor or not. Businesses who sustain encouraging results realize the people in their organization are the drivers of the success and PROFITS a company seeks to achieve. It stands to reason then that companies should be focused much more intently on their people and their unleashed potential, both personally and professionally, if they are to maintain those consistent positive results needed to compete in any market. Three familiar ideas trigger the things that successful companies do to develop and tap the potential of their people: 1. The company has a clear, well-articulated set of values that are the foundation for management practices that provide for the company's competitive success. 2. The company has a significant degree of alignment and consistency in the peoplecentered practices that express its core values.

3. Senior managers in these companies (not just the founders or the CEO) are leaders whose primary role is to ensure that the values are maintained and constantly made real to all of the people who work in the organization. The most visible characteristics of successful companies are their values and the fact that the values come first even before margins. Why are values so important? Because we a people need to believe that what we do makes a difference to others and that our work is important. That in itself serves as a crucial motivator for any employee. We also want to feel that we are valued as people. We want to be respected for who we are, not simply for what we do. Read any material on the psychology of motivation and be reminded that money by itself isn't sufficient for motivating long-term above average performance.

The business author, John Miller, reminds us that every leader in a company should ask these questions regularly: 1. How can I reinforce and communicate our core values on a daily basis? 2. How can I create and communicate a clear vision for the part of the business that I manage? 3. What can I do to help others understand how our values drive our strategies? 4. How can I provide the people with whom I work with clear performance objectives that support our values? 5. How can I create an atmosphere in which people feel included and valued? 6. What can I do to ensure that everyone is heard?

How To Read Your Prospect Like A Book Top salespeople and the most successful managers recognize the importance of nonverbal communication in the selling process and have learned to "listen with their eyes." They understand that one of the easiest and most effective ways to close sales is to be aware of their prospect's "buy signals."Are you aware that your body language reveals your deepest feelings and hidden thoughts to total strangers? Body language is a mixture of movement, posture and tone of voice. It might surprise you to know that research indicates over 70 percent of our communication is done nonverbally. In fact, studies show that nonverbal communication has a much greater impact and reliability than the spoken word. Therefore, if your prospect's words are incongruent with their body language gestures, you would be wise to rely on their body language as a more accurate reflection of their true feelings. Gain the Competitive Edge Get started on the right foot. Research shows that we decide in the first few moments whether we like someone or not. Yes, we also judge a book by its cover too. There is absolutely no substitute for a positive first impression. Create a favorable first impression and build rapport quickly by using open body language. eye contact, you should show the palms of your hands, keep your arms unfolded and your legs uncrossed. Create harmony by "matching and mirroring" your prospect's body language gestures. Matching and mirroring is unconscious mimicry. It's a way of subconsciously telling another that you like them and agree with them. The next time you are at a social event, notice how many people are subconsciously matching one another. Likewise, when people disagree, they subconsciously mismatch their body language gestures. You can build trust and rapport by deliberately, but subtly, matching your prospect's body language in the first ten to fifteen minutes of the appointment. For example, if you notice that your prospect has crossed their arms, subtly cross your arms to match them. After you believe you have developed trust and rapport, verify it by uncrossing your arms and see if your prospect will match and mirror you as you move into a more open posture. If you notice your prospect subconsciously matching your body language gestures, congratulations, because this indicates you have developed trust and rapport. Conversely, if you notice your prospect mismatching your body language gestures, you know trust and rapport has not been established and you need to continue matching and mirroring them.

Body Language Basics. Be mindful to evaluate the flow of "gesture clusters" rather than isolated gestures taken out of context. Listed below are some important body language gestures that will help you close more sales in less time. Body Postures There are two basic categories: Open/Closed and Forward/Back. In an open and receptive body posture, arms are unfolded, legs uncrossed and palms are exposed. In a closed body posture, arms are folded, legs are crossed and the entire body is usually turned away. Leaning back and closed = Lack of interest Leaning back and open = Contemplation and cautious interest Leaning forward and closed = Potential aggressive behavior Leaning forward and open = Interest and agreement Head Gestures· Head neutral = Neutral and open attitude Tilted back = Superior attitude Tilted down = Negative and judgmental attitude Tilted to one side = Interest Facial Gestures · Eye rub = Deceit, "see no evil" Eye roll = Dismissive gesture that indicates superiority

GOING GREEN .... Cleaning with Household products Using salt around the home Salt can be also be used in many different ways around the home as a more environmentally friendly alternative to harsher synthetic chemicals. Being so plentiful, it's also very cheap - so you can save a wad of money in the process. Here's just a few uses for salt: Salt as a polish By mixing salt and vinegar into a thick paste, it can be applied to brass silver and copper as a polish. Use a soft cloth to apply and buff, then rinse thoroughly in water and dry well. Cleanups For oil and egg spills, cover the area with salt - it's a lot easier to pick up. Salt drain cleaner Equal quantities of salt and hot water poured down a drain can help get rid of nasty smells and dissolve grease, plus help slow future buildup. This probably shouldn't be used in blackwater systems too often as it may upset the good bacteria that are crucial to breaking down solids. Scouring pots and pans Pour rock salt onto greasy cookware before scouring to help cut through the grease Removing tea and coffee stains To remove tea and coffee stains on cups and decanters, sprinkle salt onto a sponge and use a circular motion when rubbing over the stains. Pest deterrent Where ants frequent, pour a line of salt to prevent them from crossing. Weed killer A mix of 1 part salt to 3 parts boiling water can be poured directly onto weeds to kill them.

Propane Cylinders Compressed Gas Cylinders come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Pressurized adn compressed gas cylinders should never be palced in the trash.

Mouthwash and gargle Dissolve around a quarter teaspoon of salt into the equivalent of half a mouthful of warm water. Swish it around your mouth and gargle. Great for sore throats! Smelly cutting boards A smelly cutting board simply means bacteria are present and this is not only a whiffy problem, but a health issue. Bacteria are killed by salt, so by rubbing salt into your cutting board, let it sit for a little while and then rinse, your board will smell fresh and be bacteria-free! Fire extinguisher Keep a box of salt close at hand as an emergency fire extinguisher for grease fires. While it shouldn't replace a proper fire extinguisher, it makes for a good backup. Iron cleaner Over time, irons pick up bits of junk that cause them to stick when you iron your clothes. To remove the gunk buildup, sprinkle salt onto a sheet of paper and then run the iron over it. Ensure you use a shot of steam to clean the jets after doing this and also wipe down the plate with a damp cloth once it cools.

White Vinegar Mildly acidic white vinegar dissolves dirt, soap scum, and hard water deposits from smooth surfaces, yet is gentle enough to use in solution to clean hardwood flooring. White vinegar is a natural deodorizer, absorbing odors instead of covering them up. (And no, your bathroom won't smell like a salad! Any vinegar aroma disappears when dry.) With no coloring agents, white vinegar won't stain grout on tiled surfaces. Because it cuts detergent residue, white vinegar makes a great fabric softener substitute for families with sensitive skin.Try these recipes to harness the cleaning power of white vinegar:

Homemade Spray Cleaner Recipe Mix in a sprayer bottle: 1 cup white vinegar 1 cup water In the kitchen, use vinegar-and-water spray to clean countertops, lightly soiled range surfaces and backsplash areas. In the bathroom, use vinegar spray cleaner to clean countertops, floors, and exterior surfaces of the toilet.For really tough bathroom surfaces such as shower walls, pump up the cleaning power by removing the sprayer element and heating the solution in the microwave until barely hot. Spray shower walls with the warmed generously, allow to stand for 10 to 15 minutes, then scrub and rinse. The heat helps soften stubborn soap scum and loosens hard water deposits. White Ring Remover Great for: Anywhere you've accidentally left a water ring (but not on unfinished wood, lacquer, or antiques). Ingredients: One part white non-gel toothpaste to one part baking soda. How to use: Dampen a cloth with water, add toothpaste mixture, and rub with the grain to buff over the ring. Then take a dry cloth and wipe off. Use another soft cloth for a final shine. Polish as you normally would. Marble Cleaner Great for: Natural stone countertops Ingredients:A drop or two of mild dishwashing liquid (noncitrus-scented), 2 cups warm water. How to use: Mix the detergent and water. Sponge over marble and rinse completely to remove any soap residue. Buff with a soft cloth; do not let the marble air-dry. Caution: Never use vinegar, lemon, or any other acidic cleaner on marble or granite surfaces; it will eat into the stone. SAFETY TIP:Never combine ammonia-based cleaners with chlorine bleach or products containing bleach, such as powdered dishwasher detergent. The fumes they'll create are extremely dangerous. Before doing any mixing, read the product labels first.
