L

awyer Gary D. Indech is celebrating his fifth anniversary since opening his law practice, Indech Law Chambers Professional Corporation, located in the heart of historic Downtown Milton at 207 Mary Street. Gary was called to the bar in 1997 and after a training period in a local Brampton law firm where he developed his expertise in residential real estate and wills and estate planning law, Gary moved his practice to Milton in January of 2011. When he opened up his practice in Milton at 251 Main Street, he was extremely excited and passionate to build something of his own. Gary quickly learned that it was not about the financial growth of his practice, but it was about helping to make the lives of the people of the Milton community better. It is this that is now motivating Gary to continue his legal career in this wonderful community. Gary has been delighted by his choice to relocate his professional life to Milton. He looks forward every day to coming to his office, energized and ready to serve the Milton community. In November of 2012, Gary met Joe Servos of Nichols & Servos and began discussions to purchase Joe’s law firm. Joe was ready to retire and wanted to sell Nichols & Servos. Gary was ready to expand. After some lengthy negotiations, an agreement was struck and Indech Law Chambers became the owner of Nichols & Servos, all its clients, contents of the wills vault, other legal property, and the good will. In May of 2013, Gary moved his practice

to 207 Mary Street and now continues his law firm there. Gary’s philosophy of legal practice is based on his personal philosophy of life – commitment to integrity, honesty, loyalty, professionalism and perseverance. He applies this philosophy to his law practice so that his clients receive top-notch legal services. With attention to detail and passion for everything he does, Gary provides all his clients with quality representation in the areas he practices. “I believe in servicing my clients with integrity, honesty, loyalty and professionalism,” Gary said. “and I am dedicated to protecting my clients legal rights and best interests, and our clients expect this from me.” Indech Law Chambers provides quality legal services in the areas of residential real estate and mortgage refinancing law, wills and estate planning and estate administration. But Gary’s true calling is to assist the elderly with their legal issues. Gary’s experience with the elderly goes back twenty-five years when he was studying for his Master’s degree in university. In 2015, Gary received special legal training and was certified as an Elder Law practitioner with the Osgoode Law Development Centre in Toronto. He now devotes a large portion of his time providing expert sophisticated legal advice to the elderly in the estate planning area. “Just getting more complex, sophisticated training has helped me build a niche practice in

the Milton community,” Gary said. “Very few lawyers in Milton do the sophisticated estate planning that I do because I am continually upgrading my legal knowledge and skills by attending seminars, courses and programs in my area of expertise. It takes a lot of upgrading to remain on top of the changing state of the law.” Gary describes himself as very accessible to his clients by the unique service of mobile legal services. “As an added-value service, I go to client’s homes, offices, hospital rooms, seniors residences or wherever it is convenient, here in Milton as well as throughout Halton region and the GTA. Also when I meet new clients, I am very thorough and detailed in the interview process, especially with a client doing their estate plan. It’s just how I run my practice. I am the front line of my law firm and anyone can speak to me directly about any issue, which remains confidential. When you call Indech Law Chambers, you speak to Gary Indech.” Gary believes it is all about top-notch legal services at reasonable prices. It is what Gary offers his clients and what his client’s demand. Gary expects nothing less for his clients. So, if you wish to have more information about Gary Indech or Indech Law Chambers Professional Corporation visit Gary’s website, www.indechlawchambers.com, call Gary directly to speak to him at 905-636-8890, or feel free to visit his office at 207 Mary Street, Milton.

he Hollywood spotlight was on the Milton Centre for the Arts January 16 for the fourth annual Mayor’s gala. Guests entered the Cogeco Escarpment Hall with a red carpet under their feet. The glamorous mood continued as the coloured spotlights floated along the lobby. “It brings back good memories of all the Hollywood movies I’ve seen over the years,” Joe Yaworski said of the theme. The gala featured clips of old movies, and a trivia contest. Tables were set up in the lobby, and Minmaxx Hall for a buffet-style dinner. A green screen photo booth was set up near the entrance. A second area was set up featuring Mayor Gord Krantz, and Fred Smith.

The featured concert was from the Milton Philharmonic Orchestra playing music from the movies with musical guests Christopher Wilson, and Sarah Strange. It opened with an appearance by Darth Vader leading the orchestra through the Star Wars theme. After it ended emcee Michelle Truman was brave enough to help Darth take off his mask to reveal to the audience it was actually Mayor Krantz. The first half continued with a salute to the cinema including “As Time Goes By” from the classic movie Casablanca. Vocalists traded off with Strange singing “Feed the Birds” from Marry Poppins, and My Heart Will Go On

from Titanic. Wilson sang Some Enchanted Evening from South Pacific. He also performed my favourite song of the first half “If I Were a Rich Man,” from Fiddler on the Roof. A 30 minute intermission featured bite-sized desserts from La Rose bakery. People also returned to the photo booths to capture the evening’s memories. “It’s fantastic to have that excitement here,” Kimberly Singh said. Singh was dressed in a gorgeous red dress, one of many fantastic gowns in the audience.

Melanie Silva and Bob Hall, Co-Directors of Milton Show Choir

The second half kicked off with a performance from The Dance Class to tunes from the movie Grease. From there it moved into highlights from the Pirates of the Caribbean before vocal performances from Wilson, and Strange. The second half featured songs from the Phantom of the Opera, and My Fair Lady. My favourite was “Stars” performed by Christopher Wilson from Les Miserables. It’s a lesser-known song performed by the character “Javert” in the movie. The theme changes every year. Stay tuned to www.miltoncentreforthearts.ca for next year’s theme as well as other activities going on at the Milton Centre for the Arts.

n Sunday, January 17th 2016 an event was held at the Milton Holiday Inn to commemorate the Prophet Mohammed’s Birthday by observing Milad un-Nabi and to speak about the ongoing cooperation between the Muslim Community; several local United Church groups; the Rotary Club of Milton and various other independent individuals. This eclectic group has formed SAFARI which ‘is a broadly based community of volunteers working together to bring hope and promise of future well-being to a Syrian refugee family.”

The title of the group SAFARI stands for: Service And Friendship Assisting Refugee Immigration. The event was organized by the Jamia Riyadhul Jannah mosque with sponsorship

from Minmaxx Realty Inc. and MiltonLinks. com. Event organizer and Minmaxx Realty COO, Dr. Rabiya Azim, worked closely with the mosque, sponsors and presenters for this special evening, “I am tremendously humbled for the privilege that God has continuously given me to organize an event in honour of our last prophet, Muhammad (peace be upon him)” said Dr. Rabiya.

At the gathering were many beautiful people in brightly patterned shalwar kamiz and colourful scarves mingling happily with those in everyday attire. Several dignified celebrities were in attendance, some from local radio stations. Indira Naidoo-Harris, MPP for Halton, was present and warmly welcomed by all. Special guests also included Iqra Khalid, MP Mississauga – Erin Mills;

Arnold Huffman, Ward 5 Councillor; Rick Di Lorenzo, Ward 7 Councillor; and Azim Rizvee, federal Liberal candidate – Milton.

Cameras clicked and the room was filled with anticipation for the evening’s programme. Over 200 people attended the event and enjoyed the traditional Naat, a poetic praise to the Prophet Mohammad, by guest speaker Qari Syed.

“This is a great opportunity for us to come together with family, friends, neighbours and our community to celebrate the life of the Holy Prophet,” said Indira Naidoo-Harris. “It is particularly special today because we can do some good work for our brothers and sisters in Syria”. “Today we remain in accordance with the spirit of Islam to integrate the society that

we are now a part of and welcome Syrian families to this great country,” said Azim Rizvee. “We are all brothers and sisters in spirit and our shared values unite us”. “One lesson I have learned from the life of our Prophet is the perseverance he had to build a community, to work toward an objective, and to struggle so others don’t have to suffer for their beliefs,” said Iqra Khalid. “We are lucky and blessed to live in a country like Canada where we have a charter of rights and freedom that protects us and helps us celebrate our religion.”

The event included a special presentation from Milton SAFARI on sponsoring newly arrived Syrian refugee families and helping them to integrate into Milton.

“We are all working together!” Irene Harrison of Faith United Church acknowledged: “We are pretty sure of temporary housing for the expected refugees in a local private home for a while.” Then she quoted a Swahili proverb: “Little by little the bucket will be filled.”

Ruth Parkinson, also from Faith United, affirmed: “We are on an awesome voyage!”

“Why split the efforts?” asked Azim Rizvee, “Let’s join hands for the same cause!”

roud and excited families gathered in Gymnasium B at the Milton Sports Centre on January 17, 2016 to watch the Opening Ceremonies for the MYRec Youth Basketball League. Family members of the boys in the teams formed a line outside the door as the players and coaches went outside in the hallway. Basketball-themed music played as the coaches and players on the teams were introduced one by one and ran into the gym, high-fiving the family members. The league has 2 different age groups (8-10 years and 11-13 years) and 4 teams for each age group; Suns, Stars, Crescents and Thunder. After the introduction of the players, speeches were given by the MYRec organizers and coaches. Organizer Imran Merchant explained the rules of the Basketball League to the players, emphasizing mutual respect. MYRec is an organization created by Muslims in Milton to help the community maintain a healthy lifestyle. They facilitate programs that incorporate fun, sports, Islamic culture and religion with the eventual goal of creating a MYRec community centre. MYRec’s goals

are to unite the Milton Muslim community, promote physical activity, allow families and youth to network, and strengthen their faith with Islamic education. “We’re encouraging families to participate in sporting events, community events. And our approach is to be the stepping stone for families into the broader community, we think that a lot of times a family might be concerned with some of the food arrangements because we have dietary restrictions and certain things that we need available for some of the families to be comfortable,” said Hamdan Iftikhar, MYRec’s Public Relations Manager, adding that the feedback for MYRec has been “overwhelmingly positive” and that the organization was sold out for their MYCamp family camping trip last summer at Kelso.

After the speeches finished, the real action began. The coaches competed in a dunking contest, an excuse to show off their formidable skills for the amusement of their players and the parents in the audience. One of the coaches placed a young player in front of the basket and dunked over his head, swinging from the basket after dunking. Adding to the excitement, the coaches played in a coaches vs. coaches basketball game. One team wore orange jerseys while the other wore no jerseys. At first the “skins” team was racking up points and steadily defeating “orange” but orange collected a few baskets, showing potential to turn the game around. Orange scored 2 more baskets in the final minute of

the game. The skins beat orange but orange won the hearts and cheers of the crowd as a lovable underdog team. The basketball game was followed by a prayer and a reception. MYRec hosts several events each year. Coming up this year they have a field trip for the Basketball League to see a Raptors game, the 3rd annual MYFest on April 23 and a Camping Trip in the summer, amongst other activities. The opening ceremonies were quite eventful and entertaining. MYRec is a useful and worthwhile program for the Muslim youth of Milton and I’m excited to see what they do in the future. For more information about this program, visit MYRec.ca

Along with the Basketball League they also have a more casual Youth Pick-Up Basketball program for older teens (14-18 years) as well as a Soccer League (4-13 years). “It’s affordable and it’s close by so it’s easier to do with little kids. You can see there are very young families so there’s always something going on,” said Maryam Bilal, whose son Shahid was participating in the basketball league. Shahid, who enjoys trying out different sports, was also signed up for the MYRec soccer league last year.

here were faithful volunteers of all ages at the Coldest Night of the Year Launch Party on January 9th. People were registering in teams to walk 2, 5 or 10 kilometres. Some were filling out ballots for door prizes or were entertaining the many eager children with crafts, games, face painting and exquisite henna hand patterns. Snacks were served. Videos about the Walk were viewed. There was a hum of anticipation and camaraderie. Kind people were planning how to raise money for needy people in our town. The local charity for which the funds are raised on the Coldest Night of the Year is Milton Transitional Housing. The countless volunteers included Wendy Schau and Margot Johnson.

When asked why she became involved with MTH, Wendy said, “When I was teaching, it became really clear to me how important

a stable home is to a child’s success in school and in life. After I retired, I wanted to work to help families have good, affordable places to live. MTH has been an excellent place to do that.

Lorna Turner, a long-time volunteer with the Milton Transitional Housing group declared that “Things are heating up!” Referring to the Milton Transitional Housing organization she explained: “We help people who can be helped, who are employable. We are a bridge with supportive counselling. We are in between the shelter and the solution. “At the beginning it was the project of the Milton Christian Churches. Now all parts of the community are involved. The job is to support our clients. We use all the help we can get. Lots of local agencies assist in various ways. The job is figuring what is needed and helping them to find that.”

Indira Naidoo Harris, Liberal MP for Halton, in a presentation to the Ontario Government stated that:

Empty Bowls event later in the winter; and the Fashionista Flip in January.

On January 9th, Indira attended the Launch party for the Coldest Night and signed up to walk even though she said “I am not really any good in the cold!”

Brian Carney, CEO of the Coldest Night of the Year organization, left a message on the Coldest Night of the Year website: “Why are we walking on February 20th 2016? It’s not for the warm bowl of chili at the end of the event….not because you can earn a nice cozy toque …..not just to get some great exercise with your friends. We walk because there are neighbours, family members and friends in our communities in need. We are passionate about helping the homeless, hungry and hurting.”

Milton Transitional Housing “provides a compassionate, human connection to those facing difficult times. Since 2011 this dedicated group has worked tirelessly to make sure our neighbours do not fall through the cracks.”

This led to a discussion about the similar problems the homeless face during the long bitter Canadian winter. Many of our neighbours in our community for a myriad of reasons have difficulty managing their lives. MTH’s temporary units are available to clients for between 6 to 24 months. In April 2015 MTH was the recipient of an Ontario Trillium Foundation Grant spread over three years to help fund MTH’s plans to grow capacity from 3 to 5 housing units by 2018. In Milton MTH organizes the Coldest Night of the Year Walk; the popular and delicious

Donna Danielli, Executive Director of Milton Transitional Housing, noted that “it is unbelievably impressive how the community of Milton constantly embraces and supports all calls for help! Our greatest asset is the wonderful volunteers that we have in Milton.”

Groups are still being organized to walk on the Coldest Night of the Year on February 20th, 2016. Additional walkers, volunteers, sponsors and donations to Milton Transitional Housing will all be gratefully received.

T

he mood was welcoming and supportive as Miltonians gathered at Teatro Conference Centre January 8 to raise funds, and awareness for Syrian Refugees. Hosted by Milton Muslim Moms the dinner included one of the first Syrian refugee families to settle in the area. The federal government made a campaign pledge to bring 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada by the end of February 2016. They passed the 10,000 mark in midJanuary. “We want to sponsor more than one family,” Administrator Maliha Khan explained. The image of Alan Kurdi’s lifeless body motivated the group to act. There are two well-circulated photos of his body facedown on a Turkish beach, and one where he is cradled by a policeman. They were released in mid-September 2015. “We

can’t hold back anymore, group member Fareeda Kayani said in prepared remarks describing the group’s feelings. They are working with the Islamic Circle of North America (I.C.N.A). Sponsors are required to financially support refugees for as long as one year, and to start have at least $30,000 in the bank. “We are trying to get them on their feet ASAP,” Khan explained. They’ve set up a team of 12 members to help refugees adjust to Canadian society. Their fundraising efforts will be ongoing throughout 2016. Bashar Al-Assad launched an assault on protesters, which was largely unsuccessful. The following three years were marked by multiple battles between rebels, and the military, shelling and unconfirmed reports of the use of nerve gas. A peace agreement was reached in 2014 allowing rebel forces to leave the city. Mazen, his wife Shireen, and their children left Homs in 2013. “The only option left to Syrians was to leave the country,” Mazen told the crowd. They spent two years working in Egypt to save money. They had to be certified by the United Nations High Commissioner of Human Rights (U.N.H.C.R.) as refugees, and then proceed through Canadian security, and background checks before being chosen for Canada. They arrived in the Milton area a month ago. The fundraising dinner served as an unofficial welcome. “I want that family to be embraced by very, very, stable government,” Mayor Gord Krantz said in a speech. He asked M.P. Lisa Raitt, and M.P.P. Indira Naidoo-Harris to join him

on-stage with the family for photos. They were awarded a bouquet of flowers. The friendliness did not go unnoticed by the family. “Everybody’s like friendly in this country,” Mazen said through translator Ahmed. They haven’t noticed many differences because of the cold weather. “They feel relaxed, happy. They feel safe,” Ahmed described. They could lock their door, and go to bed. “This is not Syria,” Mazen asserted. To learn more about the I.C.N.A’s efforts to help Syrian Refugees visit their website at: www.icnareliefcanada.ca. and a Positive Outlook for 2016 By Omer Malik

On the heels of a record year, the TREB report is forecasting strong sales in 2016 ranging from 96,500 – 105,000. While this year may be the second highest record for home sales, the prices may not increase at the same pace as last year. There are many factors to consider including interest rates, unemployment rates and the new federal guidelines. However, if interest rates increase there is still enough demand from last year to maintain an active market. The GTA still has a relatively strong economy that will keep the unemployment rate low and provide moderate income growth. In addition, a small percentage of buyers are planning on putting down a lower down payment (5 – 9.9%) which ultimately means less people will be impacted by the new guidelines introduced by the federal government in December 2015. In 2016 the average selling price will range from $655,000 - $665,000.

A

nother year has passed and proven to be profitable according to the year-end report and year-in review released by the Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB). Milton was also included in the record home sales that continued in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) in 2015 and the forecast for 2016 is on a similar trend. In 2015 the total market unit sales in the GTA was 113,134. Last year saw increased prices for low rise and condominium apartments. A seller’s market continued through the year thanks to historically low interest rates and a strong regional economy. The healthy real estate market contributed to $5.5 billion in spending.

The GTA continues to be recognized on the world stage as a great place to live, work and have fun. This will also contribute to a profitable year as more people understand the value in purchasing real estate in an attractive region like Milton. The market average of sales versus asking price in Milton was 99.38% with an average of 17.9 days on the market and an average selling price of $546,178. Comparable results at Minmaxx Realty include: 100.7% sales versus asking and 11.7 days on the market, negotiating $7,210 more on average resulting in 35% faster sales. 2015 was also a record setting year as Minmaxx achieved historically high home sales in Milton. The Mattamy built Primrose model (795 Sales Court) was sold for $1.07 million and the Sunflower model (806 Savoline Blvd) was sold for $1.15 million. Utilizing a strong team with a full suite of real estate services is an essential part of any successful investment.

Minmaxx is committed to building communities by staying connected and supporting various social and cultural clubs including the Milton Cricket League and Milton Transitional Housing. Minmaxx also worked successfully with the Town of Milton to secure a cricket pitch and sponsored the Skate Canada/ Ontario Finals. A full list of initiatives supported by Minmaxx and customer testimonials can be viewed online at www. minmaxx.com. Minmaxx Realty has also proven to be a good corporate citizen by donating $150,000 to the Milton Centre for the Arts and $250,000 to the Milton District Hospital Foundation. Minmaxx was also one of the 6 founding partners in the Milton Education Village Innovation Centre.
